Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #445 – A Twirling Christmas in the Big Apple 🍎

Monday, 15th December 2003

Good morning, darlings! It’s Emma here, back from a whirlwind weekend of twirling, shopping, and of course, some fabulous shows! It's a chilly December day in the Big Apple, but it doesn’t dampen my spirits one bit!

You know, it’s been a while since I’ve really indulged in a proper Christmas outing. Not just any Christmas outing, mind you – a Christmas outing in New York City! So much glitz, so much glam, and, well, the whole festive feeling is simply infectious. My Pink Tutu heart is positively bursting!

This trip, funded by my most recent ballet performance in good ol’ Derbyshire, has been a bit of a treat for myself, you see. My New York Blog has been doing really well – a testament to the sheer awesomeness of the city, but I must admit I haven't really had the chance to fully soak it all in lately. But, enough about my introspective ramblings – you’re here for the twirling and the twinkling lights, and let me tell you, New York is certainly living up to its Christmas spirit.

First, my darlings, I simply have to share my absolute fashion find of the weekend. Imagine my delight, stumbling upon a darling little boutique in the East Village (because where else, really?) that stocked an abundance of pink tutus! Imagine my joy! It was practically made for me, and of course, I had to indulge in a new addition to my already burgeoning tutu collection. Imagine my absolute ecstasy, darlings! I'm already picturing the stunning Christmas photos with the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in the background – think red, green, gold, pink, sparkles... a true testament to the beauty of Christmas spirit. You know I can’t wait to share those with you all!

I even found a cute pink beret to match! Now, while the weather may not always be on our side, one must still strive for a hint of Parisian chic. Just me? Perhaps! However, I think the Pink Tutu spirit is all about finding that happy medium between playful whimsy and elegant grace, which makes a chic pink beret absolutely essential! The shopkeeper even commented on the tutu, telling me how inspired she was to see a young woman like myself so full of joy and celebrating everything that’s lovely. And truly, that's what it’s all about, isn't it? Spreading a little bit of Pink Tutu magic around the world!

And what would a trip to New York City be without catching a show? Friday night I headed to Radio City Music Hall, which has truly been transformed into a magnificent Christmas Wonderland, full of festive cheer. As you know, it’s hard for a ballerina to resist a bit of holiday show, and this was no exception. The Rockettes, as always, were an absolute wonder to behold – precision, elegance, and a sense of joy that radiates across the entire auditorium. Every twirl, every kick, every high kick brought a smile to my face! The choreography was stunning, the costumes were fabulous (of course, my eye was drawn to the sparkly red ones!) and the music was absolutely breathtaking. If there’s one thing I love more than a Pink Tutu, it’s an incredibly intricate performance - and Radio City delivered in spades. You could feel the genuine joy, the passion, and the pure love of dancing just bubbling through them, a message that I'm sure touched every single person in the audience.

And now, for the most incredible surprise! After the Radio City extravaganza, my friend Clara (a fellow Pink Tutu aficionado from Brooklyn who, much to my delight, loves wearing a pink tutu on special occasions) took me to a secret ballet show – hidden away in an unassuming church basement. It was a very intimate performance, almost underground! The stage was bare and the music was beautiful. The choreography, which they had created themselves, was incredibly inspiring – full of heart, emotion, and genuine raw passion for the art of dance. The audience were quiet, enthralled, captivated by their artistry, and in that moment, we were all transported by their brilliance.

I felt it in the pit of my stomach - a genuine, deeply rooted emotion, an indescribable joy! It was more than a simple dance, more than a mere performance – it was an intimate communion, a shared love for the art, an appreciation for the sheer talent that flowed from each individual dancer. After the show, I was fortunate enough to have a quick chat with the choreographer - such an inspiring individual, passionate about art, full of energy and life! It really filled me with a sense of wonder and admiration.

And to top it off, guess who caught the bouquet at the very end of the performance? This Pink Tutu girl, that's who! A testament to my inner ballet queen, and just the cherry on top of an absolutely sensational weekend!

Of course, no trip to New York is complete without a bit of retail therapy. And boy oh boy, was I on a mission! A little afternoon stroll through the Fifth Avenue flagship stores, browsing the beautiful winter collections, and let’s just say, my suitcase was overflowing by the time I left. A new Pink Tutu skirt? Absolutely! A pair of silver stiletto heels that could slice through butter? Obviously! You wouldn’t want to catch me in the same outfit twice, now, would you?

On Saturday, I felt a real craving for some local New York experiences. You know how I am; it's about soaking up the atmosphere, the true heartbeat of a city, and the people. What better way than a journey down to the Lower East Side, for a delicious street food extravaganza and an exciting, vibrant street performance! Let me tell you, the hustle and bustle, the delicious aromas, the sheer variety – a truly captivating sensory overload. I sampled all sorts of street food, from falafel to spicy tacos, and even dared myself to try a deep-fried Oreo – surprisingly good, but my tummy did protest slightly afterward. However, when it comes to street performances, I truly was mesmerized by an incredibly energetic group of dancers, right in the heart of the Lower East Side! Full of life, they moved in unison with their hip-hop moves and modern interpretations of urban life - it felt like an explosive burst of energy! A real dance odyssey!

I couldn't help myself, I had to join in for a moment - just a little pirouette here, a sassy attitude with a twirl there, you know, the classic Pink Tutu charm! The passersby were absolutely charmed, even if their moves were a little, shall we say, lacking? That's just the magic of Pink Tutu; it can uplift any soul and bring a little joy to every single moment. I'm not talking about world domination - I’m not evil, darling, you know that – but the spread of kindness, joy, and, of course, fabulous outfits.

But the best part, honestly, is exploring those little hidden corners – those unique streets that hold a hidden beauty, where locals embrace life and celebrate their heritage. On Sunday, I discovered a charming bakery, hidden down a cobbled backstreet in Little Italy – full of delectable delights and a captivating old-world charm. There, surrounded by traditional Italian pastries and fresh, crusty bread, I sat down, sipping on a hot cup of tea and simply soaking in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. My dear, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The essence of New York is the small moments, those little details that reveal the soul of the city.

Of course, no trip to New York is complete without a visit to Central Park! It’s simply breathtaking in the winter! While most of the trees were bare, a crisp, fresh blanket of snow blanketed the grounds, giving the park a magical feel – a winter wonderland right in the heart of the city. I found a quiet bench, wrapped myself in my favourite pink blanket (which, of course, had to match the tutu) and simply watched as New Yorkers went about their daily lives, their breath coming out in tiny puffs of smoke – a scene straight out of a movie. A reminder that even amidst the chaos, life goes on, even in a metropolis like New York.

As the evening descended, the cityscape glittered in the winter sky. All around me, twinkling Christmas lights illuminated the parks, the buildings, the streets – making it a truly magical, fairytale world. The moment of reflection was pure bliss. There's a reason why they call New York City the city that never sleeps, and I’m a little bit in love. Every day here is like a ballet performance – it’s a continuous, energetic, vibrant choreography – filled with endless possibilities and opportunities.

Well, my darlings, that's my tale of this weekend’s whirlwind tour! From twirling amongst the Christmas trees, to shopping with friends and falling in love with a brand new pink tutu, the weekend has truly been a dream come true. I can't wait for more adventures here in New York City. I am definitely already dreaming of the next exciting outing, and this city is definitely never short of something beautiful, spectacular, and unexpected.

Until next Monday, darlings, keep your tutus twirling and spread a little bit of pink magic in the world! Don't forget to keep your Pink Tutu shining brightly – let your inner ballet queen loose and enjoy every single moment!

Yours in Pink Tutu, Emma 💕
