Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #457: A Tutu-licious Time in the Big Apple!

Monday, March 8th, 2004

Hello my darlings! Emma here, writing to you from the heart of the Big Apple - New York City! As always, I'm twirling in my favourite pink tutu (it's a vintage number from a vintage store in Derby!) and my heart is full of excitement.

This week, the NYC Ballet had the most fantastic performance, a mix of classics like Swan Lake with some modern interpretations. My favourite was definitely a new piece called "Whimsical Wishes," it was a playful take on the magic of ballet with gorgeous costumes and stunning choreography. Of course, the Tchaikovsky score was a perfect complement to the whole experience.

Speaking of "Whimsical Wishes," I truly believe in the power of ballet to transport us to a place where anything is possible. This weekend, I took a Masterclass at the Dance Theatre of Harlem - a gorgeous studio just off of Central Park. It was inspiring to dance alongside other like-minded individuals in that historic space. Oh, and my favourite tutu definitely made an appearance, it wouldn't be a Pink Tutu Blog entry without a touch of pink!

Before the Masterclass, I found a truly adorable boutique called ā€œThe Tutu Shopā€ - I spent at least an hour admiring all the amazing designs. I ended up leaving with a gorgeous white tulle tutu with silver sequins - it's the perfect accessory for my next Broadway outing.

Speaking of Broadway, I just had to mention Mamma Mia!. What a truly brilliant production, full of catchy tunes, amazing dancing, and absolutely heart-warming storytelling. It had me in tears one moment, singing along the next. It's a must-see if you ever find yourself in New York, a proper treat for the soul.

And of course, my trips to New York wouldn't be complete without a good old fashioned New York subway adventure! My favourite is taking the A Train all the way up to Harlem - it gives you a real sense of the city's vibrant energy and history. Plus, it allows me to people-watch, and my eyes simply adore all the unique and creative outfits people wear in NYC.

Now, as many of you know, I'm funding this amazing trip with my performances! This weekend, I did a ballet recital for ā€œThe New York Arts Initiativeā€ - a brilliant organisation supporting up-and-coming artists in all areas of the arts. I even got to perform my Pink Tutu Ballet piece, a choreography that is my passion.

To those who were there, thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with me. I can truly feel the support of my pink tutu community here in NYC.

If youā€™re thinking of visiting New York, Iā€™d wholeheartedly encourage it. From its stunning architecture to its delicious food, and the boundless optimism of the people, the Big Apple truly has something for everyone!

Stay tuned for next weekā€™s blog, when Iā€™ll be sharing all the latest on my upcoming performances and my latest fashion finds, with the help of the magical city that is New York!

Until next time, darling, twirl on!

A Bit More About New York, from My Diary!

Fashion, Shopping, and a Touch of Pink in the City:

As Iā€™ve already mentioned, I am obsessed with New Yorkā€™s street style. Every corner holds a treasure of inspiring fashion - think chic city coats layered with bright turtlenecks, colourful boots and headscarves that really make a statement. I especially adore how people pair dresses with a bit of edge, think motorcycle jackets or Converse shoes. And of course, let's not forget the vintage boutiques on Bleecker Street ā€“ a treasure trove of fashion history! You canā€™t beat a 1960s A-line dress paired with bright pink ballet shoes for a modern take on retro glam. Speaking of pink, I was thrilled to discover a store called ā€œThe Pink Flamingo" in Greenwich Village - everything from shoes to sweaters is in the most amazing shades of pink!

Eating My Way Through New York:

Food is such an important part of any city trip, especially one with the diverse culinary landscape of New York. Itā€™s a total foodie paradise! From the bustling street carts with their warm pretzels and perfectly-cooked hot dogs, to the fine dining establishments of Soho and Tribeca. Of course, Iā€™ve sampled my fair share of New York-style pizza and bagels - so many flavours, from simple pepperoni to the gourmet gourmet! But let's not forget about the iconic dessert. The cheesy, creamy slices of cheesecake!

Moments to Remember:

No visit to New York City is complete without experiencing a quintessential NYC moment. This trip, I took a trip to Coney Island on the weekend! The air was crisp as we rode the famous Cyclone roller coaster. I couldn't resist getting a delicious New York hot dog with mustard, followed by some fresh cotton candy (in pink, of course!). Then, I walked the beach, feeling the ocean air on my face.

And Alwaysā€¦ My Pink Tutu!

Whether it's a trip to Central Park (perfect for a casual tutu walk), shopping for gorgeous vintage fashion on Bleecker Street (pink is definitely the colour for shopping!), or a Broadway performance (every girl needs a little sparkle for a night on the town!), I can always count on my trusty pink tutu to complete any outfit, in any location, in any moment - even here in the biggest, most fabulous city in the world.

Remember, my lovelies, tutus are for everyone - a reminder to embrace your whimsical side and dance through life with joy! I'm on a mission to spread the joy of pink tutus to every corner of the world - a pink tutu revolution, one dance at a time!

A Special Moment with my Mom in NYC

Now, I wouldnā€™t be writing this without mentioning my mother! She travelled all the way from Derbyshire (where my heart always belongs!), to spend this beautiful week with me in New York. Weā€™ve been enjoying some lovely mother-daughter time, with trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the costumes are incredible, of course!), and Broadway performances, and weā€™ve even done a bit of shopping on Fifth Avenue. Iā€™ve also introduced her to my favourite coffee shop (it even has a pink couch!), and sheā€™s fallen in love with the vibrant energy of New York City, just like me.

Mom always says, ā€œYou have to dance through life, darling,ā€ and thatā€™s a message that resonates deeply with me. She always encourages me to follow my dreams. I truly hope my pink tutu inspires you to chase your own! It doesn't matter if you're a ballet dancer, a fashionista, a dreamer, or a bit of everything (just like me!). Let your heart lead you and never be afraid to twirl.

Until next time, darlings. Letā€™s keep the pink tutu magic alive!
