Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Monday 3rd October 2005 - Post #539

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, writing to you live from the Big Apple, where the city never sleeps… and neither does this little pink tutu-clad ballerina! This week has been a whirlwind of twirling, shopping, and theatre – oh my!

The weekend kicked off with a magical trip to the Metropolitan Opera House. It's hard to believe it's been a year since I was last in the city, but this time, I'm making up for lost time. I snagged a fab seat in the orchestra for the opening night of a new ballet production – the story was inspired by the incredible film Amelie. Of course, the main character, Amelie, was a ballerina – and, well, it doesn't get much more divine than a ballerina falling in love with the city of Paris. And oh, the costumes were just to die for – each piece a perfect blend of grace and whimsicality. It was as if I'd been transported right into a Parisian cafe myself!

Now, I wouldn't be Emma from Derbyshire if I wasn't already on the hunt for my next perfect pink tutu! Saturday was dedicated to shopping, which was actually a lot harder than I expected, you know, with the city that never sleeps and all. The sales assistants seemed to think that my request for a "fluffy pink tutu with a touch of sparkle" was a tad eccentric… eye roll. Never mind, I found a sweet little shop in SoHo – you know, the kind where everything is slightly offbeat but totally cool – and snagged the most amazing vintage tutu! Imagine, a classic tulle construction but with a sprinkle of holographic glitter. So good, I may have to put it straight on for tonight's ballet class…

Oh, speaking of ballet, the highlight of the week was, without a doubt, taking a class at the renowned Steps on Broadway dance studio. It's every dancer's dream, you know – dancing in the same studios as Broadway's greatest! I nearly died when the instructor told me to centre myself before the barre. To be surrounded by such talented dancers and fuelled by such an incredible energy – you wouldn't believe it! I managed to not only not make a complete fool of myself but even received some really insightful feedback about my posture and turnout – thank goodness for that.

Now, here's the funny thing, remember I told you I love riding the subway? So this past weekend, I tried my best to make it a tutu-tastic experience. Of course, you can imagine the looks I got, right? People just didn't expect to see a ballerina with a pink tutu bouncing around the subway station – but let me tell you, it added a dash of whimsicality to even the busiest rush hour.

Of course, no trip to NYC would be complete without exploring the city's world-famous museums! After my Saturday class, I spent a few blissful hours at the MoMA – oh, I do love a museum. The museum is just magnificent, isn't it? You know what's particularly cool? Some of the most well-known American modern artists – think Pollack and Rothko – created works on their own, while others really enjoyed working collaboratively. It’s hard to know which I find most exciting: a giant masterpiece, or one where a whole team got together to create something amazing! Who knows, maybe there will be a movement among ballerinas – a team creation like the modern artists used to make.

Speaking of teamwork, it’s actually teamwork that gets me to New York and around the city! As a lot of you know, I make a living from ballet – mostly from dancing in shows around the world, which allows me to travel and indulge in my shopping addiction… But my New York City Blog – this very site you are reading right now – keeps my finances healthy, too! Thank you so much to everyone who follows my blog – your comments are lovely.

Oh, and as for my tutu challenge? – whispering… We are going strong, and New York City is starting to get the tutu bug. It is very important for all you ballet fans, or people who just like the colour pink, to buy a tutu. Every time I come back to New York City, I see another few tutus… maybe we can have a tutu party with me!

But I shall leave you to your week – after all, there is no point writing to you from New York if I don't get out there and enjoy the city. I hope to see some of you out and about.

Until next Monday!

Love,

Emma
