Pink Tutu Blog: NYC - Post 540 - Monday, 10th October 2005

Hello, my lovely darlings! It's Emma here, writing to you from the heart of New York City! The air here is positively buzzing with excitement, the streets are overflowing with a vibrant energy that just makes my toes tap in anticipation. It's Monday, and you know what that means – a fresh start, a new week of adventures, and of course, a new post for your favourite pink tutu-clad blogger!

This week I'm channeling a real vintage vibe, channeling the spirit of New York City back in the golden era of Broadway and Ballet. My outfit? Why, it’s a dream in pink, naturally! A swirling tulle tutu in a shade of rose that wouldn’t look out of place on a carousel, paired with a vintage, powder pink cashmere cardigan that I snagged in a little vintage shop on Bleecker Street. A dash of pearl jewellery, a spritz of my signature “Pink Bliss” perfume, and a pair of white ballet shoes (the kind with the tiny pink ribbon, you know) complete the ensemble. I just love the way pink and white make my skin glow!

It’s the perfect outfit for a day of discovering the city's hidden gems, taking in a matinee performance at the Metropolitan Opera, and of course, browsing the racks at Bergdorf Goodman. Can you imagine, a tutu at Bergdorf's? Honestly, I think it would add a bit of playful whimsy to those sleek, sophisticated boutiques. Why not shake things up, right? 😉

But before I dive into all the wonderful adventures that have taken place since my last post, I just have to gush about something truly special: the feeling of travelling on the New York subway. It's a marvel of transportation, really, weaving its way beneath the city, carrying millions of people from A to B, each one with their own story to tell. I love the way the rumble of the train echoes through the tunnels, the hurried pace of life, the mix of cultures that just blend together in this magnificent, moving kaleidoscope. Plus, it's a wonderful opportunity for people watching! It's just the sort of exciting, urban adventure that makes this city such a special place for a girl like me.

Oh, and while I'm on the topic of the city's magic, remember I mentioned my new perfume? "Pink Bliss"? You see, this incredible little perfume is a bit of a lucky charm, or at least that's what I believe! The moment I stepped onto the train at Penn Station, wearing it, I knew it was going to be a special day. Turns out I was right. A chat with a charming artist on the way to the Met led to an impromptu ballet session at Grand Central Station, an opportunity I couldn't miss. Turns out, New York's subway system is the most unpredictable and inspiring performance space one can imagine!

Speaking of performance spaces, oh darling, have I got a story for you about my experience at the Met Opera! I secured tickets to see Puccini's La Bohème. It's such a powerful piece, telling the timeless story of love and loss set against the backdrop of Paris' bohemian lifestyle. There were so many beautiful scenes: the lively cafÊ, the snowy winter streets, the passionate emotions pouring out through the music. You could feel the power of the story and the characters reaching into your very soul! It was truly moving.

I know you're going to ask about the costumes – because let’s face it, what’s a pink tutu girl doing at the Met without analysing the fashions, right? They were absolute perfection, with delicate silks and flowing fabrics, creating such captivating visual moments throughout the opera. I felt inspired to try a few graceful moves myself, even though my elegant pirouettes and delicate leaps were definitely on hold!

After the opera, of course, it was time to explore the heart of New York. Where did I go, you ask? The shops on Fifth Avenue! That’s where it’s at, darling! Now, Fifth Avenue has always been a mecca for high fashion, a place where creativity blossoms in beautiful silk, cashmere, and couture. This time, though, I wasn’t just admiring the clothes, I was thinking of how I could incorporate a little “pink tutu” flair to the whole shebang. Can you imagine seeing a model sashay down the runway in a full, shimmering tutu? Or a sophisticated socialite adding a playful touch with a tiny pink tutu under a cocktail dress? Imagine the shock, the wonder, the laughter it would provoke! It would definitely turn heads, wouldn't it?

My travels in the city didn’t end there, darling. I ventured further, deeper into the heart of the city, and it wasn't all elegant boutiques and opera houses. Oh no, I also dipped my toes into the grittier side of the city, spending a wonderful afternoon exploring the trendy and energetic West Village. The atmosphere was electric – cafes humming with chatter, art galleries displaying unique works, and a vibe that’s full of creative energy. And I have to say, I feel at home amidst this chaotic beauty, finding inspiration and joy at every corner.

And talking about creative energy, I had the most delightful lunch in a cute little Italian bistro. I'd heard that authentic Italian cuisine in New York was simply a must-try experience. I sat in the quaint little restaurant with the cobblestone streets and the gentle chatter, and tasted a delectable pasta dish. It was heavenly! Oh, and there's a new vintage tea room on Thompson Street. Just imagine it - dainty floral cups, pastries shaped like tiny hats and dainty teapots. This girl will definitely be popping in on my next visit!

Now, as the sun dipped below the skyline, painting the city in fiery hues of orange and red, I knew I needed to embrace the iconic New York moment: a visit to the top of the Empire State Building. There was the city stretching before me in all its dazzling glory. Towering skyscrapers kissing the clouds, a labyrinth of streets below, and a vibrant cityscape that seemed to stretch on forever. It was a truly magical moment, standing high above the city I'd come to love. The lights began to twinkle below me, and I felt a thrill course through me. I stood there, lost in contemplation, for the longest time. There's simply something about this city that stirs a magical kind of excitement in my heart, makes me believe anything is possible.

So, as I sit here in my hotel room, listening to the city’s unique heartbeat through my window, a feeling of contentment washes over me. Today, darling, has been a symphony of pink, elegance, and exploration. New York has captured my heart, one delicious pastry, one Broadway song, one breathtaking view at a time. But then again, I think, a little piece of this magical city has always been part of me, inspiring my dreams, my fashion choices, my desire to spread joy and a touch of playful femininity wherever I go. And that's something, I think, worth celebrating!

See you all next week for more pink tutu adventures!

With love and sparkles,

Emma 💕
