Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Monday, 2006-04-10 - The City That Never Sleeps (In Tutu!)

Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Blog NYC! It's a brand new week, and this tutu-loving blogger is absolutely brimming with excitement. Iā€™m perched in my favourite cafe in the West Village, a pink macaroon on one side of my plate and a triple espresso on the other, while my trusty notebook waits patiently to soak up all the delicious New York City gossip and fashion delights.

Todayā€™s blog is dedicated to all you wonderful people who believe that life is too short to be taken seriously. So, grab your favourite pink tutu, throw on your brightest smile, and join me as we take on the city that never sleeps (in tutu, of course)!

This week's adventure started early, fueled by the adrenaline rush that comes from a triple pirouette right before the curtain rises (you see, dear readers, I am lucky enough to have a second career as a professional ballerina. Just a tiny detail, eh?). My current ballet season is all about a charming little piece titled "Cinderella". Don't worry, there are plenty of tutus involved (a veritable explosion of them, actually).

This weekend I graced the stage of The Town Hall in the Big Apple, performing to a packed house and leaving the audience spellbound (they absolutely adore my solo with the slipper!). I was utterly exhausted, but exhilarated. Then came the magic of a quick bite at the famous Russ & Daughter's on Orchard Street (with a side of pink lemonade, naturally). The deli is the perfect place to spot the trendiest fashionistas, especially the men with their fabulously vintage style. I have my eye on a pair of polka dot bowties to wear to a ballet performance (one day!).

Speaking of performances, my friends are just about to put on a phenomenal show. I'm talking about "Tutus of New York", a non-profit collective of passionate ballet lovers, each with a unique and inspiring vision for pushing the boundaries of traditional dance. Iā€™ll be heading there after I finish my latte. And of course, it wouldn't be a ā€œPink Tutuā€ blog post without a dash of fashion, wouldnā€™t it?

So, the next stop on my Monday agenda is Bloomingdale's (just a quick metro hop away - the city's subway system is like an amazing underground fairy tale). My pink tutus have been working overtime lately, so they are in dire need of a spa day! I think a brand new silk number from Vera Wang will be the perfect addition to my wardrobe. It pairs fabulously with the latest pastel-coloured vintage bag I found in a tiny, independent shop near my apartment.

Speaking of apartments, let me give you a quick peek into my life in New York City! I currently share a delightful apartment on Bleecker Street with two incredible friends, one a budding poet and the other a charming baker with a penchant for polka-dot aprons (the epitome of Brooklyn cool, isnā€™t she?). My apartment is a symphony of pinks, adorned with fluffy throws and velvet cushions (think a vintage princess boudoir with a hint of Bohemian chic).

Our landlord, a whimsical painter who seems to have sprung straight out of a fairytale, is absolutely delightful. He doesn't mind a little sparkle or pink fluff around his building, so much so that heā€™s been known to join me on the occasional ballet class at The Dance Complex on Lafayette Street (the classes are excellent, if I do say so myself). It is amazing what a bit of pink can do to brighten a Monday morning!

While in New York, I am, of course, embracing every chance to indulge in the delights that only this extraordinary city can offer. Last week, I wandered through the flower market at Union Square with my friends (you wouldn't believe the colours - absolutely exquisite! It's like a paradise for pastel lovers!). And my lovely friend Jessica has just convinced me to try an authentic slice of New York pizza for the first time - something I wouldn't normally touch, I admit (I'm a vegetarian, darling, with a very specific love for asparagus!). But you know me - Iā€™m always ready to embrace new adventures. So, we shall see if the slice will win me over.

Todayā€™s journey into the city takes us to a truly spectacular exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art: "Dancing on Air," an enchanting exhibition dedicated to the world of ballet. You can trust me on this, darlings - it is absolutely spectacular. From shimmering costumes to breath-taking photographs and captivating videos, this exhibit will leave you wanting to pirouette down the street.

Speaking of ballet, have you seen the incredible lineup at Lincoln Center for this week? My favourite choreographer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, is taking to the stage. Iā€™m already buying my tickets - wouldnā€™t miss it for the world!

And, darling, what would my blog post be without a little pink-tutu-love inspiration? My top three picks this week are:

  1. A pair of ruby red heels that would make Cinderella envious, from my favourite vintage boutique in SoHo, The Flea Market. They look incredible with a pair of black leggings (oh, and of course, a pink tutu)!
  2. A charming, delicate silver necklace, featuring a ballerina pendant. I found it tucked away in a little shop on Crosby Street. It's the perfect way to add a touch of whimsical elegance to my everyday style.
  3. An incredibly delicious, all-pink cake from a small bakery tucked away on St Marks Place. This decadent treat, topped with edible pink roses, is absolutely heaven. It even matches my shoes!

Well, my darlings, this is where Iā€™m going to leave you for this week. I can already feel the city's electric energy crackling in the air, ready to whisk me away on a brand new adventure!

Remember, embrace your inner ballerina. Never stop dreaming, darling. Never stop twirling! Until next timeā€¦

Lots of love and sparkles,

Emma xx
