Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #628 - Monday, 18th June 2007 - New York City, the City that Never Sleeps...in Pink Tutu!
Hello darlings! It's Monday, and you know what that means... Pink Tutu Blog NYC time! This week, I'm writing to you from the most fabulous city in the world, New York City. I've been here for a few days now, and it's been utterly bonkers. Let's dive in!
This week's trip was fuelled by a spectacular performance of "Swan Lake" at the Metropolitan Opera House, and trust me, darlings, it was everything a ballet enthusiast could ever dream of. I had the pleasure of performing with the Metropolitan Ballet company, and seeing those majestic chandeliers and the ornate gold details... pure magic. And let's not forget the costumes! I had a glorious swan costume - the most exquisite feather detailing you ever did see.
But before we get into all that, let me tell you a bit about my arrival in New York. I took a taxi to my little haven in the heart of Manhattan. I had to, you know? The Metro is so much fun to navigate, and the New York crowd is so stylish – everyone dressed up like they're in a magazine, but the Underground can be a bit…intense. So, it was the trusty taxi for this girl, and let me tell you, that city really does never sleep.
Of course, my arrival wouldn't be complete without my favourite accessory – my pink tutu, and for my travels this week, I paired it with a vintage white silk blouse. A touch of Audrey Hepburn glamour never hurt anyone, especially with those iconic red New York cabs zipping past!
The Fashion Show - A Delight for the EyesOnce I settled into my adorable little hotel, it was straight off to the nearest vintage clothing store. I’m obsessed with the vintage fashion scene in New York. There’s an undeniable charm and vibrancy to those vintage gems! Imagine, darlings, finding an incredible silk dress that whispered of a glamorous era. It’s like a mini time capsule, and I have a soft spot for those delicate pieces with beautiful hand stitching and fine detailing – a little slice of history. I bought the most stunning silk dress with floral embroidery, in a pale pink of course, and paired it with a straw boater hat. You wouldn't believe the compliments I received as I hopped onto the Metro, a touch of 1940s Parisian chic in the middle of Manhattan!
After a delectable afternoon tea – complete with scones, clotted cream, and finger sandwiches, my darling! – I made my way to the iconic Bryant Park. It’s just delightful, with its perfectly manicured lawns and stunning views of the Empire State Building. There, I enjoyed a beautiful ballet show in the park, accompanied by the gentle melodies of a string quartet. They even had an adorable little food market with yummy French macarons and lavender lemonade. The perfect afternoon escape from the bustling city.
"Swan Lake" at the Metropolitan Opera HouseSpeaking of magic, darlings, I have to tell you about the "Swan Lake" performance at the Metropolitan Opera House. It was such a fantastic opportunity for me to experience this world-renowned opera house and showcase my passion for ballet. Performing there was a dream come true!
And the costumes! You must know how much I love the elegant gowns and the whimsical, dramatic tutu designs for the ballet, and this one, oh darling, this one was pure perfection. I’ll never forget how the dress flowed gracefully when I danced. All that beautiful layering and detail… breathtaking.
Now, you all know my affection for pink. So you can imagine my absolute glee when the "Swan Lake" costumes were not the usual pale pastel pink. Oh no, this production had some exquisite shocking pink hues. The effect was simply stunning - against the pale gold of the stage, and the glimmering chandelier… absolute drama!
Food, Glorious Food!Let’s face it, darling, a trip to New York City simply isn't complete without a good dose of scrumptious food! I tried some seriously fabulous Italian at this adorable little trattoria in the Village. The atmosphere was fantastic, a mix of romantic lighting and cheerful chatter. And then there was the food, so fresh and bursting with flavours. I opted for the seafood ravioli with a delicious tomato and basil sauce. The flavours literally exploded in my mouth! Absolutely divine!
Later that week, I treated myself to the most delicious blueberry pancakes with whipped cream and maple syrup – I know, totally indulgent. I simply couldn't resist them, especially when they were piled high and glistening under the afternoon sunshine. And let's not forget the afternoon tea. That is a staple in any good travel blogger's diary.
Finding my Ballet FamilyBut my time in New York City wasn’t just about shows, performances, and amazing food. It was also about the people! And I found so many kindred spirits, ballet-loving souls like me, who embrace the beauty of movement, the artistry of expression, and of course, the sheer joy of wearing a tutu.
It was incredible to connect with others who understand the magic of ballet and appreciate the art of sharing stories through dance. We chatted about our favorite ballets, reminisced about past performances, and exchanged stories about our favourite tutus, naturally.
It's moments like these that make all the hard work, the dedication, and the passion for dance truly worth it. Knowing that there's a global community of ballet lovers who embrace the elegance, the grace, and the expression of this wonderful art form fills my heart with joy.
On to New AdventuresNow, my darling, it's time for me to pack my bags, grab my tutu, and hop on the next adventure. But not without giving you a glimpse of the gorgeous sunset from my hotel room here in New York City. A perfect pink sky mirroring my favourite color – how wonderful is that!
I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you next week. Until then, stay tuned and keep dancing!
Love, Emma
