Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post #658: A Week of Dancing Dreams in the Big Apple!
Hello my darling dears! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing ballerina, bringing you a fresh dose of New York City magic from my weekly blog. Today's post is a little bit extra special, as I'm back from a whirlwind week in the Big Apple, filled with enchanting performances, sensational shopping, and oh-so-much pink, of course!
This trip was fuelled by a very special engagement: performing with the renowned City Ballet Company! Remember that dream I'd been chasing, dancing alongside those dazzling professionals in the grand Met? Well, my darlings, this dream finally came true! My nerves were aflutter, but with each graceful step on that hallowed stage, I felt the exhilaration of achieving something truly magnificent.
But first, a little about my journey… the anticipation of arriving in New York is something truly magical! The plane trip seemed to fly by, thanks to a delightful view of the snow-kissed landscape that had blanketed Derbyshire for weeks. Arriving in the Big Apple felt like stepping into a dazzling stage set - skyscrapers reaching for the heavens, the cacophony of traffic a melodic symphony.
Speaking of arrival, my first stop was always going to be a visit to Bergdorf Goodman! As I stepped into the beautifully opulent shop, I swear, I felt a wave of excitement pass through me like a swirling, pink-hued waltz. Rows and rows of the most incredible designs in shades that would make your heart skip a beat. There was a beautiful coral velvet evening gown that whispered my name (and thankfully, it didn't cost the same as a flat in the Upper East Side!), a fuchsia satin clutch bag with a whimsical flower detail that was practically begging to be carried around town, and of course, I had to indulge in a luxurious pink satin scarf. The perfect little something to tie my ensemble together and keep me looking chic and cosy in this glorious, winter city.
Next on my agenda? Exploring the heart of the city, of course! There’s something simply breathtaking about the way the city pulsates with energy. It feels like every corner is waiting to unfold a new adventure. As a ballet dancer who's never too far from a pirouette or a leap, New York is a wonderland of movement! It's not just the ballets and performances that thrill me – it’s the dance of everyday life that captivates. From the rhythm of the city's footsteps to the graceful flow of the traffic, New York moves to its own tune, and I’m totally entranced by it!
The subway is my absolute favourite mode of transport here. It's a real mix of textures, smells, and faces that is utterly fascinating, all while carrying you through the heart of this pulsating city. Who needs the fancy Uber when you can travel with the locals? Although, a shout out to my dear friend Sarah for sending a bouquet of pink roses with a cheeky little card reading "Keep it twirling, Emma!". Such a kind gesture.
Talking about flowers, my stay wouldn't be complete without a trip to a flower market. Stepping into the blooms was a little like entering a dream. Vibrant hues of lilies, roses, and daisies surrounded me. My favourite? A stunning bouquet of pink peonies, naturally!
A highlight of the trip was seeing a mesmerising performance of ‘Swan Lake’ at the Lincoln Center. It was one of those unforgettable experiences where the beauty and intensity of the choreography and the sheer skill of the dancers takes your breath away. It reminded me that even though I’m still at the beginning of my career, there are incredible artistic heights to reach, and dreams waiting to be realised.
There were, of course, some extraordinary performances in store for me! Oh, you know me, I love seeing a beautiful show, especially when I can draw inspiration for my own dance steps! It’s all about taking those elements that stir something within me and finding my own interpretation, finding a way to capture the magic within myself.
Speaking of magic, have you ever heard of Ballet Theatre of Harlem? Well, let me tell you, it's a hidden gem in the city's artistic landscape! It’s about a young ballerina's passion for dance and a desire to find her place in the world.
Of course, I had to see a Broadway show. Imagine a whirlwind of music, costumes, and sheer entertainment, and you’ll have an idea of how utterly magnificent "Hamilton" is!
Oh, and how could I resist taking in a performance by New York City Ballet at the David H. Koch Theater? The energy was so electric that I felt every cell in my body vibrating! I found myself transported to a realm of exquisite artistry and breathtaking beauty, watching these phenomenal dancers move with such grace and power that my heart filled with a joyous surge.
But beyond the dazzling shows, it’s the small moments that make New York so extraordinary. Like finding the most perfectly pink tutu at a vintage shop on Bleecker Street, the colour even more vibrant against the grey cobbled stones. (Let's just say it found a permanent home in my travel suitcase, wink, wink.) And sipping steaming cups of coffee with Sarah, watching the sunrise paint the city in shades of apricot and rose. There’s truly nothing like those moments of quiet contemplation alongside your favourite person!
This whirlwind week ended with me stepping back on to the plane, my heart overflowing with happiness. Each visit to New York reminds me why I’m a ballerina – it’s not just about the perfect pirouette or the graceful extension. It’s about the stories that dance weaves, the emotions that flow with every movement, and the endless possibilities that lie within a simple pink tutu!
Next week I'll be back with more fabulous discoveries and adventures from right here in New York. Remember, darling dears, don't be afraid to twirl!
Until next week, stay radiant!
Emma xoxo
P.S. Did you know today (Monday, January 14th, 2008) marks the birth of the iconic English poet, Lord Byron, also known as George Gordon Byron! A man of incredible talent, his rebellious spirit and adventurous nature remind me of the courage needed to chase your dreams. And, like his own poetic journeys, I'm excited to see what exciting adventures lie ahead in the new year. So, raise a glass (or perhaps a teacup) to all the adventurous souls out there!
