Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #705 - Dancing into the Big Apple!
Monday 8th December 2008
Hello darlings! It's Emma, your favourite tutu-loving, pink-obsessed ballerina, and this week, I'm taking you right to the heart of the Big Apple! New York City, you are absolutely magical, and I've already fallen head over heels with your hustle and bustle, your grit, your glam, and most of all, your phenomenal dance scene!
Travels on the Metro
I touched down in NYC a few days ago, after a whirlwind trip over from my lovely Derbyshire, and since then, it's been all about the exploration. My faithful pink tutu (let's call her "Priscilla," she's like a close friend, always with me, you know?) is certainly getting her fair share of admiring glances as I navigate the subway. It's so much fun to watch the expressions on people's faces! A surprised grin, a quick "cute!" or even just a knowing nod from a fellow ballerina - it makes me smile every time.
And speaking of the subway, what an absolute joy! A vast network of underground transport, transporting you seamlessly through the concrete jungle. Each station has its own personality - art installations, local characters, the sounds of city life - it's quite an adventure just navigating the metro itself. It's the ultimate people-watching opportunity, too. Where else can you be so close to such a vibrant cross-section of humanity, all rushing to and fro?
A Touch of Broadway
Now, New York City wouldn't be New York City without Broadway. And my love of performance simply HAD to take me to the legendary Gershwin Theater to see "Wicked" this weekend. What can I say? It's simply mesmerising! The dazzling costumes, the incredible music, the pure talent on stage - it left me utterly spellbound. Every single song, every dance move was pure magic. If you ever get a chance to see this show, don't hesitate for a moment.
Dance, Dance, Dance!
My week here in New York wouldn't be complete without some ballet class, so I found this adorable little studio tucked away in Greenwich Village. A real hidden gem! The space is small, but the energy is electrifying, with dancers from all walks of life working up a sweat and finding their inner ballerina. The teacher was just lovely, very encouraging and supportive, just what you need after a long day of sightseeing.
You know what's brilliant about this studio? You wouldn't even know it was there if you didn't actively look! A tiny doorway hidden in an alleyway, leading you to this treasure trove of movement and passion. It’s like discovering a secret world, which I just love about this city. It feels like every nook and cranny has its own story to tell.
Fashion Finds
What's a girl trip to New York City without a touch of shopping therapy? I must admit, I am utterly captivated by the vibrancy and variety of the city's fashion scene. It's a sensory overload, but in the best way possible.
One of my favourite things about New York fashion is its mix of classic styles with trendy updates. I found myself in a vintage shop, scouring racks of old satin gowns and antique lace - perfect for a glamorous soirée. Then, down the street, I stumbled into a modern boutique filled with statement-making pieces for the contemporary ballerina. Who says you can't mix classic with contemporary? I certainly don't!
And of course, no trip to New York is complete without a little "tutu inspiration". This week, I fell head over heels with the most amazing, whimsical pink tutu at a shop called "Dancers Dream" in SoHo. Think tulle as fluffy as clouds, a beautiful shade of blush pink, and just enough sparkle to add a touch of magic to any performance. She's coming home with me!
Pink Tutu, Pink City
You know what I've realised about New York City? It’s already embraced a touch of pink! It’s in the delicious strawberry donuts, the rose-coloured sunset over the city skyline, and even the playful shade of the many pink taxis that seem to pop up everywhere.
But what I really hope is that this city, with its relentless spirit, embraces a bit more of my personal style icon: the Pink Tutu. This isn't about trends or fleeting fads. This is about adding a dash of whimsy, a sprinkle of femininity, and a dose of confidence to your everyday life.
Let’s spread a little joy, let’s embrace our inner ballerina, and let’s rock the Pink Tutu - it’s not just a piece of clothing, it's a state of mind!
Until next week, my dear friends, happy dancing and may all your tutus be pink!
Emma xoxo
P.S. I can't wait to see what next week holds in the City That Never Sleeps! Let me know if you have any requests for my future New York adventures - I'd love to explore with you!
