Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #714 – A Dance with the Big Apple

Hello darlings!

It's Monday, the 9th of February, 2009, and Emma's back in New York, ready to share the whirlwind that was the past week with all of you!

Last time, we left off with a big question: What would the Big Apple hold for this tutu-loving girl?

Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! It's been a week packed full of glitz, glamour, and the thrill of stepping out of my comfort zone… which, of course, involves wearing my favourite pink tutu in places that, well, let's just say it wasn't quite your usual tutu territory!

A Ballet Dream Come True

First things first – I had to see a ballet! How could I visit the heart of dance and not grace a theatre with my presence? It simply wasn't an option. I headed to the Lincoln Center, the epitome of cultural grandeur, and took my place among the well-dressed New York crowd.

My eyes were glued to the stage as the New York City Ballet Company brought a classic to life: Swan Lake. The dancers, oh my goodness, they were incredible! Every pirouette, every arabesque, each leap felt like magic. There's something truly captivating about ballet. It’s art, it’s beauty, it's powerful storytelling with every movement. The story of Swan Lake is one of betrayal, love, and sacrifice, and the company’s rendition was heartbreaking and brilliant. It was the perfect start to my New York ballet experience.

Subway Adventures

The metro, ah, the metro! My trusty companion on this trip. Navigating the subways here is an art form in itself! There are so many different lines, maps, and even, dare I say, a slightly disorienting number of transfers! But honestly, that’s half the fun! People-watching on the subway is like being on stage for an endless street performance. Each stop reveals a new tableau: a businessman engrossed in a crossword, a street musician captivating with their soulful tunes, a group of young artists discussing their latest creations. The city comes alive in every carriage! And the best part? There are so many places to be discovered. You never know who you'll see or what you might stumble upon next!

A Parisian Interlude

Sometimes, you just need a little French flair in your life! This week, I ventured to the famous Café Luxembourg, a charming bistro nestled amongst the bustling avenues of the Upper West Side.

It felt like stepping into another world! A Parisian cafe experience without even setting foot in France! As I sipped my cafe au lait (yes, with the tiniest pinch of sugar!) I indulged in the classic French crepe, savouring every bite of this delightful Parisian treat. My pink tutu stood out a little amidst the chic black dresses and classic Parisian stripes, but who says that New York can't have a dash of Parisian charm? I even felt a little like a ballerina in a Parisian cafe scene, if you know what I mean!

Shopping Adventures

No trip to New York is complete without a bit of retail therapy! I started off at Macy’s, one of New York’s most famous department stores. You could spend days browsing the aisles of this shopping wonderland, and I certainly spent a good few hours getting my retail fix. The iconic red-star logo, the beautifully curated displays, the tantalising fragrance of perfumes… the air itself felt exciting. I walked out with a stunning sequined clutch bag in a shade of blush pink, the perfect touch of elegance for my ballet outfits.

Of course, my trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting Bloomingdale’s – an absolute haven for fashion lovers! The selection of dresses and accessories left me breathless! After hours of perusing the racks and carefully selecting some dazzling statement jewellery, I left with a suitcase bursting with chic additions for my New York wardrobe.

The City That Never Sleeps… (And the Tutu That Never Rests)

And if there’s one thing that New York embodies, it’s its energy! This city never rests, and it certainly keeps its visitors busy.

I ended my week with a fantastic dinner at one of the many rooftop restaurants in Manhattan. Dining on the edge of the city, with the skyscrapers illuminated against the starlit night, felt almost surreal! Every sense was heightened – the city lights, the soft music, the delectable flavours. I took my seat, twirling my skirt with a mischievous grin. This city, with its pulsating rhythm, feels alive!

A Dreamy Farewell

As I leave New York, a city that feels like a million dreams woven together, I am filled with so many fond memories. Every corner, every street, every nook and cranny feels alive with its own unique story. The bustling streets, the Broadway theatres, the stylish boutiques, the art galleries – New York is a city that speaks a language of its own.

It’s an enchanting city of possibilities, and I, the tutu-clad girl from Derbyshire, left my own mark upon it.

So what's next for Emma, you ask? I'm already making plans for my next New York adventure!

Until next week, darlings! Remember, everyone can be a little bit like a ballerina, all you need is a sprinkle of magic and a whole lot of confidence, and a pink tutu, of course!

Yours in tutu-tastic travels,

Emma
