Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post #745: New York City - Monday, 14th September, 2009
Helloooo from the Big Apple, my fellow tutu-lovers! 🍎✨
Emma here, ready to paint the town pink - literally - as I've just waltzed onto the scene in the most fabulous city in the world. And, you guessed it, I'm wearing my signature pink tutu! 🩰
You see, this week's adventure started with a triumphant performance at the Derbyshire Arts Centre, where I gracefully twirled and leaped in the most stunning performance of Swan Lake that anyone in our county had ever seen! I think I even saw some teary eyes - but don't worry, it was pure emotional impact! 🦢💦
Anyway, thanks to that fab performance, I've been able to bank enough moolah to embark on this dream trip - a whole week of exploring the vibrant metropolis that is New York City! And let's be honest, this city was practically designed for pink tutus. With all the neon lights, glamorous stores, and chic cafés, it's a true fashionista's paradise.
Now, I've only been here a day, and already my feet are blistered from a day of exploring the best that this magnificent city has to offer. It started with a whirlwind tour of Times Square. I tell you, the sheer scale of it is astounding! All the bright billboards and the buzzing energy were just intoxicating. And yes, I made sure to have a snap with the bright pink Coca Cola bottle that's always such a hot spot for photos! 💖🥤
I just know you guys are going to love this post, so settle in and get ready to dive into my New York adventures, tutu-clad, and with a sprinkle of pink sugar. Here’s the rundown of what happened today!
👠 Ballet Ballet Ballet! 🩰Of course, no trip to New York City is complete without a trip to see the famous New York City Ballet. 🗽 So, I spent the morning taking in a mesmerizing performance of The Nutcracker. Honestly, the dancers were breathtaking, with their flawless moves and pure artistry. And it made me dream even bigger about joining the prestigious company one day - maybe they're hiring for their pink tutu ensemble? 🤫
Now, after that spectacle, I felt completely inspired, so, in the afternoon, I whisked myself off to a dance studio right in the heart of the city, surrounded by those sleek and stylish towering skyscrapers. It was called Dance It Out, and my goodness, it was fabulous. They even had a cute little corner for grabbing lattes and a pink flamingo pinata! Just my kind of place. And don't worry, I've got photos of the tutu I wore - and yes, it was a new one. It has all kinds of shimmering rhinestones and feather boas - absolutely magnificent. You’ll be seeing a photo of it later! ✨
After working those muscles, it was time for dinner in Greenwich Village! 🏙️ What an absolutely fabulous neighbourhood. We’re talking vibrant streets overflowing with artists, singers, and buskers playing amazing melodies on their instruments! And even the restaurants are charming with their bohemian, eclectic décor and cute, quirky names. My tummy was very happy. 😋
💖Shopping Shopping Shopping! 🛍️I am so a fan of the shops in the Village. We’re talking charming vintage boutiques, cute boutiques selling bohemian-style clothing with a modern edge, and even a place dedicated entirely to fairy-themed trinkets. It’s pure, delightful mayhem - but what could be better?!
Oh! I can't even tell you about the fabulous pink sequinned headband I bought! I was almost afraid to wear it, but I couldn’t resist. It’s absolutely beautiful and matches my new tutu perfectly! I will, of course, be rocking both in photos for all of you. ✨
I then had to treat myself to a little wander through Central Park. It was the perfect end to a truly amazing day, as the city's lights were just starting to glimmer as the sun was setting. I had my headphones in and was enjoying a good bit of power walking as the day came to a close. 🌆
🌃Subway Travels! 🚇You know how I adore public transport. I must admit, getting used to the New York City subway was a tad bit intimidating. After all, I've only ever navigated the humble and relatively placid Derbyshire train lines before! But there's no doubt that I loved riding those long and winding tunnels underneath the bustling city streets. I took the E line, which is apparently a super touristy option, but who needs those crowded attractions when you’ve got a tutu?! There was actually an adorable dog on the subway wearing a cute little tutu dress. So I managed to find another fellow pink-lover on the subway! It’s clear we’re starting to create a global movement of tutu-wearing women. I am very proud. 💕
Speaking of my love of public transport, I have some very important information to share with you, my fellow ballet fans. Did you know there are some very strict dress codes for New York’s Ballet Company, the Lincoln Centre Ballet and the School of American Ballet? As a fan of wearing pink tutus on a daily basis, I was somewhat surprised to learn of these guidelines when planning this trip.
I thought a true ballerina never has to follow these strict rules – ever, but when I enquired about going to see La Bayadère, they asked for formal attire! Now, there I was in my fabulous new tutu with sequins galore, looking to take in some classic ballet performances – and suddenly I wasn’t even remotely “appropriately dressed”! They told me if I wasn't wearing an appropriate dress I wouldn’t even be let through the door. 😱
They weren’t open to negotiating their rules, no matter how much I explained how pink tutus are a fundamental right of every ballerina. 😩 You wouldn't believe the heated conversation we had at the Lincoln Center box office about how this is the wrong dress code in a free, modern society – all whilst holding the latest edition of the New York Post! 🤣
This isn't fair. And I feel passionately that everyone, particularly in America, should have the freedom to express themselves, whatever their preferred tutu style. I shall, of course, keep campaigning against this strict dress code and fighting for pink tutus for all – I believe we will win in the end. 😉
💗What’s Coming Up? 💗I’ve had such an amazing time, and, to be honest, I’m already missing New York City and wishing I could stay here forever. However, the show must go on, and I have my trusty diary at the ready, so here is a little sneak peek at what’s in store for me on my adventures across New York:
- Tuesday: I’ve booked an hour in the iconic Bryant Park - just the perfect opportunity to let loose on those steps and perform some balletic steps! You can follow me for live video feed on Instagram. 🩰
- Wednesday: Broadway showtime! This is not to be missed. 💃 We’ve all got our favourites, and I’ll definitely be attending the matinée of Chicago. Don’t be surprised to see some serious musical numbers from my fellow travellers on the E Line as we’re whizzing along through the subways on our way! 🎭
- Thursday: There’s a fab-looking event at the New York City Library. This could just be the best day of the entire week! I’ll make sure you get photos and insights! 📚 I’m hoping the library won’t be too strict with the tutus this time.
- Friday: Okay, I can’t possibly visit New York without exploring the very stylish Chelsea Market. I'm planning to have the best breakfast burritos this city has to offer, plus a look at some truly original stalls with fashionistas of every variety. Think you're ready to see what I find? 😉
- Saturday: Time to explore more. The Brooklyn Bridge will be our destination and of course we’ll make sure to have the obligatory photos of the gorgeous skyline of the city. NYC is a sight to behold at any hour, so we can take as many pictures as we want. It's also where the fashion district is based - I'm expecting a long shopping day in Manhattan. 🛍️
Of course, my adventures don't end here. My pink-tutu-tastic travels will continue across America for the rest of the week - so stay tuned, my friends. I will keep you updated about all of my discoveries, fashion finds, and experiences from the amazing New York City.
Have a lovely week, and remember, the only rule that matters is to wear a pink tutu whenever possible! Until next Monday! 💖
