Pink Tutu Blog: NYC #777 - A Twirling Tale in the Big Apple!

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your pink tutu-wearing travel buddy, reporting live from the bustling streets of New York City. I’m so excited to be here, in the city that never sleeps! My trip to the Big Apple, fueled by a week of enchanting ballet performances and the most beautiful new leotard collection I've ever seen (yes, I am totally using my stage earnings for a little retail therapy!), is just reaching its dazzling crescendo.

As you all know, I love travelling, and taking the subway in New York is just an experience on its own. It’s like a miniature performance - you’ve got a packed stage, some amazing, and at times hilarious, acting talent, and you just know that this performance could erupt at any moment. Sometimes it can be a little too exciting, let’s just say I wasn't too keen on the rather dramatic incident involving a bag of cheese on the number 2 train on Saturday – let’s just say a few ladies’ facial expressions would’ve been award-worthy, the scene definitely wasn’t something from a romantic comedy!

Monday mornings in New York always feel special. The city seems to take a deep breath, exhale a little, and then, the hum begins again. This particular Monday morning, the energy was a bit on the ‘freshly squeezed juice’ side; a good kind of bright, the sun was gleaming through the tall buildings, casting an uplifting, pink-hued glow on everything. It felt almost magical, like the city was in its own, uniquely graceful, ballet sequence.

Today's itinerary: A spot of afternoon ballet class (it’s hard to not get a little dancey when you’re surrounded by so much creative energy!) followed by some seriously chic shopping at a newly discovered vintage boutique. Now, who can resist a beautifully embroidered tulle skirt from the 1950s? Not me, my darlings! I had to have it, it would be simply criminal to leave it behind.

*Tonight's showstopper? A ballet production that had the whole theatre spellbound. * We’re talking a breathtaking combination of contemporary movements, heart-stopping grace, and music that sent shivers down your spine. Just picture this: swirling tutus, breathtaking jumps, and elegant gestures - I tell you, it was the epitome of artistry. Of course, I had a magnificent, soft-pink tutu on, you couldn’t drag me out of a ballet, and especially not this one. My own tutu, if I may say, made a statement on the otherwise understated ensemble in the audience. You know what, darlings, if we want the world to wear tutus, I think we’ve got to start with a little inspiration. I've never believed in standing on the sidelines; sometimes you’ve got to step onto the stage and give it your all, in a pink tutu or not!

I think this journey is making me bolder than ever. New York City is about making bold statements, isn’t it? Bold choices, bold adventures, bold tutus, (there we go, a theme emerging!) Even a seemingly simple thing like the way the New Yorkers carry themselves is so dramatic, they’re almost actors! It’s the feeling of power and ownership you have in New York City, no matter how ordinary the task you’re performing is.

Oh, I must tell you about the delightful surprise in the air today – a vibrant art market, a symphony of color bursting through the mundane. Hand-painted silk scarves, sculptures that took my breath away, even hand-crafted jewellery! Oh, I do love finding something truly unique that just has my name on it. This time, a set of dainty silver ballet shoe earrings, complete with little pearls, danced their way into my little travel bag – a small souvenir with a large, sparkling smile.

As the sun started setting on the bustling cityscape, a magical glow seemed to fall upon the skyscrapers, they looked like a group of dancers performing the ‘city lights ballet’ - so mesmerising.

I have to share my favourite discovery. Tucked away on a cobblestone side street is a cozy little tea shop. I'm talking about an actual vintage tea room, you know, with floral patterned wallpaper and lace tablecloths - so darling! A place you’d find tucked away in my little hometown of Derbyshire. But of course, there's always a twist - they offer a ‘tutu tea’, a concoction that's pink as a ballerina's dream, made with berries and rose petals, it tastes like a dream. My sweet tooth was simply screaming with delight.

Here’s to magical journeys, tutus of all hues, and the constant hum of life in a beautiful city that's always worth a trip back! See you next week, my darlings, I can’t wait to tell you all about my next ballet adventures!

Lots of love,

Emma

What’s on this week?

It's April 26th, 2010, and New York is bursting with creative energy. Today’s highlight? * The New York City Ballet is giving a mesmerising performance at the David H. Koch Theater. It’s something every true ballet fan needs to see, especially for the captivating contemporary dance and captivating choreographies that I can't stop talking about! * Broadway shows: It’s a whirlwind of colourful characters, brilliant lights, and iconic sets. You have your pick from heart-wrenching dramas, dazzling musicals, or funny comedies. This city, it’s alive!

Pink Tutu-rific Fashion Tip!

For those of you venturing out in this stylish city, remember – accessorize to stand out. Let those tutus twirl and let those sparkly, ballet shoes steal the show! Don't forget, a smile always brightens the day and can even make the New York City rush hour less scary. Just throw in a touch of feminine flair (and maybe a pink tutu), and you’re set to paint the town in all the shades of loveliness.
