Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Edition - Post #793

Monday, 16th August 2010

Hello my lovely tutu-loving darlings! It’s Monday, which means it’s time for a new Pink Tutu Blog post from yours truly, Emma, live and kicking in the Big Apple, New York City!

As you know, this week has been absolutely packed with exciting events – let me tell you, New York is just the perfect playground for a pink tutu-wearing ballerina like myself!

Backstage at the Ballet: A Glimpse Behind the Curtain

Right, let's rewind to Friday, darling. I had a simply fabulous day filled with backstage drama (don't worry, nothing scandalous!), dazzling dancers, and enough tutus to make even the most jaded fashionista swoon. Yes, I spent a few hours at the New York City Ballet studio – they were holding an open rehearsal, and I, of course, was right there, front and centre! I even had a chat with one of the ballerinas who, bless her heart, was thrilled with my own pink tutu!

(You all know how much I love tutus, but I can’t let this opportunity pass by without saying – pink tutus are the most beautiful. There's something so exquisite about the way pink just twirls and dances in the light!)

I snapped a few pics of the dancers practicing. Honestly, the focus and grace is quite astonishing! If you’re in New York, I can’t recommend going to a ballet performance enough – it's truly something special. The way they effortlessly glide across the stage...the beautiful costumes... it’s simply spellbinding.

A New York Fashion Adventure: Exploring the Boutiques

I couldn't resist squeezing in a spot of shopping between rehearsals, of course! New York is just the place to indulge in a bit of retail therapy, don’t you think? My trusty map led me to some divine little boutiques tucked away in the heart of Greenwich Village. I came away with some lovely finds for my wardrobe – including a new silk scarf in the most beautiful shade of lavender, a pair of delicate silver earrings that twinkled like stars, and a pair of scarlet shoes to add a splash of colour to my repertoire.

You'll be seeing all of these new treasures on my upcoming posts!

A Culinary Treat: Lunch in the East Village

By Saturday, my tummy was rumbling! My dear friend, Sarah, suggested a charming little Italian restaurant in the East Village called 'La Bella Vita.' I confess, I couldn't resist the siren call of a giant plate of spaghetti alle vongole with a side of garlic bread. Honestly, it was divine. The best part? They even had pink cocktails!

Now, speaking of delightful surprises, let me tell you about…

A Broadway Dream: Witnessing the Magic of "Wicked"

I've always wanted to see the show Wicked on Broadway! (Ever since my very first ballet class at Derbyshire Academy, actually – I was always obsessed with Glinda, and her dazzling costumes!). This past weekend, I was finally able to cross it off my list, and I'm telling you, it did not disappoint! The sets were simply breathtaking, the music had me tapping my toes and humming along, and the story just had me captivated from the very beginning. Honestly, the energy of the whole thing – from the cast to the audience to the whole building itself – just made it such a special, magical experience!

If you're looking for a truly enchanting theatrical experience in New York, you absolutely have to see Wicked. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

A Pink Tutu Walk: Soaking in the City

On Sunday, I couldn't resist exploring a bit of the city in my own signature style: pink tutu and all! The people of New York City have never ceased to amaze me, I've never been anywhere else where people are so welcoming to outlandish fashion statements! My trusty map led me from Central Park – (what an absolutely divine and peaceful green space amidst the hustle and bustle of the city!) to Times Square, a bustling, vibrant crossroad of culture and art, with the famous neon lights shimmering bright like a thousand tiny stars. And let me tell you, in my pink tutu I just felt like the star of the show!

And of course, my pink tutu couldn't just stay within the city – I headed for the grand, old grandeur of Brooklyn Bridge – a place steeped in history. Everytime I see a New York landmark, it’s a reminder of what this beautiful city has to offer - a little bit of history, a whole lot of charm, and a whole ocean of dreams.

The metro, which is always a colourful spectacle of people from all walks of life, was the perfect transport. I just love watching the faces go by, their little expressions telling their stories - I imagine myself creating a miniature ballet based on the journey of the city! Oh, what I wouldn't give to have a tiny dancer for each person! (Well, if you know any toddlers in NYC, maybe I can recruit them for my mini-production!)

Making the City a Little More Pink

To be completely honest, New York is the perfect place to spread the gospel of pink tutus. Everyone here has this incredible energy, this drive for expression - it’s contagious. Maybe the true purpose of a tutu is not simply to look pretty (although that’s a massive plus, let’s be honest!) but rather to inspire us all to twirl through life a little bit more.

The thought made me giddy. Just like when I finally finished my newest tutu (that gorgeous, shimmery coral number, the perfect match for that lavender scarf I bought!). Now that one is just begging to be shown off in front of a stage!

But first, I had to return to dear Derbyshire - where life's pace slows just a tad – but even so, I will be carrying with me the New York spirit.

Until next time, darling tutu lovers! Stay beautiful! Stay brave! And most importantly… keep twirling!

Love,

Emma

P.S. I am still looking for my very own pink tutu dancing partners! If you live in New York (or nearby) and fancy some pink fun and a chance to dance, let me know! You know I’d love to add a bit more colour and movement to the city…one tutu at a time!
