Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Edition #824: A Ballerina's Delight in the Big Apple!
Hello darlings! It's Monday, and that means it's time for a fresh dose of Pink Tutu adventures. This week, we're taking a little trip across the pond to the dazzling metropolis that is New York City! Oh, how I love this city! It's just bursting with energy, style, and, of course, incredible ballet!
Remember my little spiel about getting everyone wearing pink tutus? Well, New York is the perfect place to start! Just imagine โ the bustling crowds, the iconic landmarks, all adorned with a splash of pink tulle! It's a sight for sore eyes and a feeling that would make even the most hardened cynic smile.
This trip was a whirlwind of dancing, shopping, and deliciousness (New York pizza is a religion, let me tell you!). I even managed to squeeze in a little bit of history and art, though my pink tutu had a bit of a time getting through the Met's dress code...
But let's back up a bit! You see, the way I fund my globetrotting ballerina escapades is by, well, being a ballerina! I perform all over the place โ grand theaters, small pubs, even the occasional birthday party. You name it, I've danced on it! So, with a little bit of sweat, a whole lot of joy, and a generous sprinkle of tutu-magic, I saved up enough for my New York adventure!
Monday 21st March 2011: The Big Apple Bite
The morning found me bouncing with excitement at JFK Airport, already planning my pink tutu shopping list. As I navigated the bustling underground (seriously, the NYC metro is a beast in itself!), I couldn't help but admire the sheer diversity of the city. You see every kind of soul in the metro โ sharp fashionistas, bustling businessmen, sleepy students, even a few other tutus in the mix (although, none pink yet, silly me)!
My first stop? The ballet mecca itself โ the American Ballet Theatre. It's a legendary company, and I was lucky enough to snag a ticket for a performance of "Giselle". I tell you, the sheer skill and artistry was breathtaking! The passion, the grace, the costumes โ every detail just oozed magic. After the show, I snuck backstage to admire the stunning sets and meet a few dancers. Turns out, they loved my pink tutu!
Feeling energized, I walked back to my charming little hotel (it had a chandelier, no less!) in Greenwich Village and tucked into the most heavenly slice of pizza. Then, I treated myself to a warm bubble bath with a glass of bubbly โ the perfect end to a delightful day!
Tuesday 22nd March 2011: Tutu Trails Through Times Square
You know the feeling when you step into Times Square? It's a symphony of sights, sounds, and that peculiar scent of hot dogs and popcorn! Today was all about soaking in the electrifying energy of this famous crossroads.
My trusty pink tutu made its grand debut in Times Square, as I snapped photos amongst the bright billboards and bustling crowds. People smiled, gave me thumbs up, and even a few shouted "You go, girl!" Honestly, my tutu really brightened their day, it's a win-win!
From the lights to the street performers, Times Square never sleeps! We wandered past the famous Naked Cowboy (my tutu was definitely more appropriate, darling) and paused for a moment at the iconic Disney Store, remembering my own love for all things whimsical and magical.
Later, after an adorable lunch at a tiny tea room with floral wallpaper (where I couldn't resist indulging in a delicious lemon scone, naturally!), I found myself mesmerized by a stunning ballet performance on the steps of the library. It was a beautiful contemporary piece, performed by a troupe of local dancers. I was captivated by their expressiveness and the way they interacted with the urban environment. It truly proved that ballet can thrive anywhere!
Wednesday 23rd March 2011: Museum Mania in the Big City
Time for some culture, darling! Today, I took myself on a mini adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Of course, the first challenge was trying to get through the strict dress code โ my tutu got a few questioning glances but I made a strong case for its artistic merit, and voila! The pink tutu entered the Met.
Wandering through galleries bursting with incredible art from across the ages, I was in awe of the skill, beauty, and history showcased everywhere. The intricate details on the Renaissance paintings, the bold colours of the modern pieces, the grandeur of ancient artifacts โ it was all truly overwhelming!
My personal favourite was the Egyptian section, particularly the incredible sarcophagi. I don't know what it was, but I felt this undeniable urge to bust a move right there amongst the pharaohs! But alas, I remembered I was at the Met and opted for a photo instead โ with my tutu, of course!
After a rather impressive museum buffet lunch (that even offered a selection of teas โ heaven!), I ventured into Central Park for some fresh air and a spot of people-watching. You know, just to get some ideas for my next ballet number, because the city is an endless inspiration!
Thursday 24th March 2011: Broadway Bound Ballerina
Every little girl dreams of being on Broadway, doesn't she? And you know what? It's something that I feel so lucky to be able to tick off my bucket list!
Tonight was the night, darling, the night I saw "Wicked". It was even more magical than I'd hoped! I just loved the story, the music, the stunning costumes โ the whole production had me entranced from start to finish.
Watching the talented actors and dancers soar on stage was pure inspiration! It was a reminder of the incredible power of performing arts. I think it's safe to say that "Wicked" put a real spring in my step (not to mention my tutu, naturally!).
I made my way back to my little hotel in the village, humming along to the tune of "Popular". Even as the city outside my window slumbered, my heart was buzzing with excitement from the magic of Broadway!
Friday 25th March 2011: Shopping Spree in Style
Now, no trip to New York would be complete without a good dose of retail therapy. And today, I set off to conquer the most famous shopping destination of them all โ Fifth Avenue!
Oh, the excitement! Every window, every storefront, just whispered "Treat yourself!" I'm talking Chanel, Tiffany, Gucci โ all the fashion icons that set my little tutu-heart aflutter!
Of course, no visit would be complete without some serious window-shopping in the ultimate shoe paradise, Bergdorf Goodman. Those sky-high heels, those delicate stilettos, those playful platforms โ they made my toes wiggle with delight! I ended up snagging a few lovely little items myself โ a gorgeous pink scarf (perfectly matching my tutu, naturally) and a pair of sparkly earrings for that touch of Parisian glamour.
Saturday 26th March 2011: Brunch in Brooklyn
Who doesn't love a delicious brunch, especially in New York? Today, I was eager to explore Brooklyn โ known for its artistic energy and, of course, the trendiest brunch spots!
I took a scenic walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (a little crowded, darling, but worth it!), and made my way to the delightful Cobble Hill neighborhood.
We ended up at this quaint cafe nestled in amongst the charming little shops โ a perfect spot for some pancakes and bottomless mimosas. My pink tutu fit in just perfectly with the relaxed and stylish atmosphere โ even more so after the bottomless mimosas, darling!
After brunch, we wandered the shops, absorbing the independent spirit and bohemian vibes of the neighborhood. I even discovered this fabulous vintage shop that had some utterly fabulous tutus - sadly, none pink, but oh, how I wished!
Sunday 27th March 2011: Final Farewells
I wouldn't call it "farewell", more like "see you later, darling". After a delicious and slightly oversized New York bagel, I boarded the metro with a little bit of melancholy, but so many joyful memories tucked away in my tutu-loving heart.
This city has truly captivated me. The energy, the culture, the people, the dance โ it was just what I needed.
Of course, New York won't be the last city on my pink tutu world tour. I've got more travel plans brewing โ stay tuned! In the meantime, let me know what your favourite parts of New York are! And remember, always keep it pink and twirly!
Until next time, darlings!
