Pink Tutu Blog: New York City Diaries - Post 877 (Monday 2012-03-26)

Hello, darlings! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and I'm back with another dazzling instalment from the Big Apple! I can't tell you how much I'm loving my time here - the energy, the fashion, the endless opportunities to twirl!

This week in the life of a tutu-clad traveler:

I'm going to be totally honest - the only thing I love more than seeing a Broadway show is being on a Broadway stage! Thankfully, a little bit of that dream came true this weekend when I landed a lovely gig with the Metropolitan Dance Theatre. This time, however, it wasn't the iconic red-curtained theatre that called to me - no, this was an outdoor performance in Central Park! We danced amidst the rustling leaves, with the city skyline as our backdrop - utterly magical!

As a freelance ballerina, my life is filled with these beautiful "gypsy" moments - you never quite know where your next gig will take you. This time, it was Central Park! I can't tell you how amazing it felt to feel the wind in my hair as I danced, the sun warming my skin. You know I couldn't resist twirling in my very special pink tutu, of course, complete with shimmering diamante detailing that caught the sunlight like a thousand little stars!

A Day Out in the City That Never Sleeps:

Before my weekend gig, I spent the week taking in the sights of New York, exploring every little nook and cranny this incredible city has to offer.

My day began, as it always does, with a delicious cuppa and a scone from my favourite little cafe. You'd be surprised by how many places do proper British tea and cakes in New York, but the secret to a successful day of exploring, especially when you're as fashion-conscious as I am, lies in a little morning treat!

After tea, it was off to SoHo for a spot of retail therapy - a must for any pink tutu enthusiast visiting the Big Apple! I love this neighbourhood; the cobblestone streets and beautiful old buildings create such a vibrant and charming atmosphere, perfect for scouring the vintage boutiques for fabulous finds. You can always find something special in SoHo, and I left with my tote overflowing with incredible pieces - a blush-pink vintage cocktail dress, a pair of lavender satin ballet pumps, and a gorgeous feather boa - the colour of the setting sun! I'm sure you're picturing it, my dears!

Speaking of colours, have I told you about my latest favourite? You know how much I love pink, but lately, I've been absolutely obsessed with everything lavender! It's just so calming, elegant and dreamy, and it goes perfectly with my pink! It's the new pink, if you ask me!

I have to say, New York never disappoints! After a whirlwind tour of shops and a cheeky afternoon cocktail, my afternoon adventure involved the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center. Ballet, naturally, is my lifeblood, so I try to see at least one show every time I visit a new city. There's something so powerful and captivating about seeing a ballet performed by truly talented dancers, especially on a world-renowned stage! I love soaking up the ambiance - from the opulent chandeliers to the excited chatter before the curtain rises, every element of a ballet experience just makes me feel it!

After the ballet, I had to have a traditional New York experience - a Broadway show, of course! And I chose the perfect one: “Anything Goes"! The sheer joy and talent of the performance had me laughing and clapping along, a proper theatrical delight. It was truly dazzling - the costumes, the choreography, and those dazzling performers who threw their heart and soul onto the stage! You could feel the audience's energy - everyone was mesmerised, just like me.

Subway Adventures and the City That Never Sleeps:

To move around this vast metropolis, my transportation of choice has to be the New York subway, naturally. I have a thing for the iconic "I Heart NY" totes and the classic red-and-white "metrocard", but what I really love about it is how fast, efficient, and…well, glamorous! it can be! The city itself, I think, infuses every journey with a certain “New York” spirit!

From the vintage metro stations to the vibrant faces on the trains, every journey is a unique story. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a bit of a fast-paced adventure when it comes to transportation? Just a little bit of adrenaline-fuelled excitement before the performance! This week, however, my metro journey was a little bit more exciting than usual! I was halfway through a chapter of Jane Austen's "Emma" - my favourite! - when I glanced up to see a beautiful street performer, clad in a sparkling tutu! It was as if she had waltzed straight out of my favorite storybook, bringing it to life in the middle of the station! The whole carriage paused, captivated, as she performed her delicate steps and dramatic poses. Such an impromptu display of artistry on a regular subway ride? You simply don't get that kind of experience anywhere else! It was the perfect way to wrap up a day filled with fashion, theatre, and an appreciation for the art of dance.

A Little Bit of Magic Everywhere You Look:

New York really is the most inspiring place for me, filled with dreams, possibilities, and that city vibe that just gets under your skin! The endless stream of creativity that bursts out from every street corner and every corner cafe - the fashion, the performances, the energy... it truly has it all! I feel a connection here, almost as if this city is speaking to me through its rhythms and melodies, its bustling life and artistic expression!

So, my dearest readers, until next week, I leave you with a question - what's your favourite part about New York? Have you been there? Do you love tutus like me?
