Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Edition - Post #914
Monday, 10th December 2012
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back from a whirlwind weekend of twirling and tulle in the Big Apple, and ready to spill all the glitter-tastic gossip! This week, I've been shimmying my way through the city that never sleeps, embracing its energy, and trying my best to ensure that every corner of New York is aware of the joy of a pink tutu!
My Journey to the Big Apple:
First things first, a little confession - I may be a London gal at heart, but the allure of New York City calls to me like the opening chords of a Tchaikovsky ballet! Every year, I'm drawn back to its vibrant energy and incredible cultural offerings. This time, I took the plunge (and, let's be honest, I probably spent way too much on a taxi ride at 3 am) to explore the bustling streets in a full pink tutu. It wasn't always easy navigating the crowded sidewalks (trust me, even a seasoned tutu-wearer can feel a little bit flustered amidst a rush hour crowd!), but I always find the most charming reactions when I sashay by. A smile, a compliment, maybe even a picture - it's all part of the pink tutu magic!
New York Fashion Week:
My trip coincided with New York Fashion Week, which, let's be honest, was practically a reason to book my tickets all on its own! Every corner seemed to be buzzing with excitement, overflowing with a riot of colour, creativity, and, of course, countless pairs of heels (though I admit, nothing quite beats the comfortable elegance of ballet flats for a full day of fashion mayhem!)
It wouldn't be a true New York Fashion Week adventure without a peek into the backstage world. I managed to squeeze into the Alexander McQueen show, a kaleidoscope of texture and movement, truly a feast for the senses! Every garment seemed to flow and dance like the graceful movements of a ballerina, inspiring me to dream of future pink tutus of a similar nature, adorned with dramatic tulle ruffles and unexpected textures. (A vision for my next DIY tutu project, perhaps?)
Dancing Under the Spotlight:
Naturally, my trip wouldn't be complete without a few graceful twirls in the heart of New York City! The sheer joy of finding a ballet class, tucked away on a cobbled street, was indescribable! Surrounded by fellow ballet lovers, all eager to lose themselves in the art of movement, I felt right at home, surrounded by passion and shared dedication. We danced alongside Broadway's most talented, perfecting our arabesques and grand jetés, feeling the raw energy of the city reverberating through our every step. It was a true highlight, reminding me that the language of ballet transcends even geographical boundaries.
Showtime at Radio City Music Hall:
On Saturday, I found myself mesmerised by the spectacle that is the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Rockettes. From the glitz of the costumes to the breathtaking precision of the dancers, it was pure, unadulterated magic! And did I mention the giant tree with a hundred-foot chandelier? It was a sight that would have made even the Grinch melt! The whole experience felt so fantastical, I wouldn't have been surprised if a sprinkle of fairy dust drifted into my pink tutu.
Finding My Favourites:
Of course, every adventure in New York needs a little retail therapy, and mine was fuelled by a serious case of pink tutu envy! I scoured the city's most chic boutiques and charming vintage stores, adding a few treasures to my pink tutu collection, and uncovering inspiration for future designs. I can't wait to experiment with some of the delicate lace details and flamboyant embellishments I found during my quest for the perfect New York pink tutu.
My favourite spots?
- The charming vintage boutique on Bleecker Street. (They have a whole rack devoted to feather boas, can you even!)
- The vintage department at Macy's, where I scored the most magnificent sequined bolero. I just know it'll look absolutely stunning over a billowing pink tutu.
Pink Tutu Memories:
The journey from the quiet streets of Derbyshire to the hustle and bustle of New York City always leaves me with a wealth of new experiences and a pocket full of inspiration. This week, it was a whirlwind of fashion, dancing, and pure girly magic, all made more enchanting by the playful pop of pink tutus.
Don't forget to follow me on Instagram for my favourite photos and stories from my trip!
Until next time, happy twirling!
