Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #949 – Monday 12th August 2013: A Whirlwind in the Big Apple

Good morning, lovelies! The sun is shining on a rather humid New York City and it's a beautiful Monday. As you know, I always look forward to Monday's; a chance to reflect on the week gone by, share it with you and then embrace a new one with the most fabulous outfit! Today, as a treat, I thought we’d take a journey back to last week to relive some magical moments.

If you’ve been following me for a while you'll know that last Tuesday saw me grace the stage at the lovely Dance Theatre Workshop in Chelsea in a fundraising performance for a dance school in Derbyshire, England. My hometown. It was quite the experience. Imagine, if you will, an intimate theatre filled with supportive dance lovers all looking expectantly towards me... the nervous butterflies in my stomach almost prevented my entrance! But, like a little ballet ballerina ballerina, I glided onto the stage, my pink tutu swirling and the rest, as they say, is history.

The funds raised will help support dancers back in my home town which is the very best feeling. This, alongside all the other lovely things that happen on this incredible New York dance journey is exactly what makes this city a total joy! There's always something inspiring happening around every corner - a chance encounter with a new tutu, a stunning ballet performance at the Lincoln Center, a glimpse of the iconic pink tutu on someone strolling through Times Square, anything! This, however, is why I absolutely adore my pink tutu! It acts as a kind of magical talisman... it attracts those same kind of delightful, joyful souls that make the Big Apple so exhilarating and wonderful!

Before we go any further, lets talk about outfit. I've kept it relatively simple today because I'm feeling a little overwhelmed after last week's marathon of excitement. But simple doesn’t have to mean dull, does it? I've taken the simple black pencil skirt and added my absolute favourite, shimmering pink blouse with lace trim - it feels both feminine and sophisticated, something that's particularly fitting since I've been attending a series of meetings, exploring possible new projects for my blog and even finding the time to check out the fantastic ballet boutique in the Lower East Side. It’s brimming with adorable pink tutus. Can't get enough! But before you ask, it's not a shopping spree yet, because that requires its own blog entry. Patience darling, it's all coming!

Today, we'll start in Times Square. That dazzlingly neon illuminated crossroads in all its extravagant glory was my starting point on Friday. There are some moments in life that you don't truly experience until you’re surrounded by people who just know the rules. That Friday morning at Times Square is a great example, where you get to embrace that whole new York attitude and energy - which involves dancing on the spot whilst the metro rattles along with no hint of shyness whatsoever, even as people stream past with bags piled up on their shoulders!

As I mentioned earlier this blog post is all about reliving my magical New York experience. It really felt like a whirlwind tour last week as we took in the breathtaking beauty of Central Park. The sunshine streaming down through the leaves on the trees made it feel like a scene from a fairytale. I sat down on a bench with a beautiful bouquet of tulips and simply marvelled at how this tiny speck of nature could feel so utterly magical amidst a backdrop of the city's most iconic landmarks!

One of the highlights for me was undoubtedly seeing Romeo and Juliet at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The atmosphere was electric and the talent on the stage blew my mind away. I have to say I absolutely fell in love with the passionate portrayal of Juliet by the principal ballerina. And let me tell you, darling, it was just divine. She was utterly mesmerizing in her movements; effortless grace with such heart, I'm almost certain you could hear the thunderous applause from a block away! Her story, that passion, is an example of how incredible our love stories can be and for that moment, even with the lights of Times Square just outside I felt truly immersed in another world!

However, it wouldn't be a New York adventure without mentioning the magnificent Metro system. It's like a portal taking you on a grand tour through a mosaic of sights and sounds, so rich and textured it's impossible to predict what your journey will hold next. I have to say, last week was quite special - especially as I encountered another lady wearing a magnificent bright pink tutu on my journey to Harlem! I literally squealed and it's been in my mind all week. It truly embodies what it's all about, how a simple act of bravery and joy can bring people together.

As you might have gathered, there's simply not enough time to share it all with you, but the sheer volume of extraordinary experiences means this is just the first of many, many stories of my week. You'll have to come back on Monday for more! Until then, why not think of the last time you wore your pink tutu! I’m dying to hear. Don't be shy! Tell me about your own stories, and who knows? Maybe you'll even inspire the next blog entry!

See you next week! Keep it real, keep it sparkly! And stay positive!
