#PinkTutuBlogNYC Monday 2013-09-16: Dancing in the City that Never Sleeps

Hello, darling readers! It’s Emma here, back from the dazzling, electrifying city of New York City with another dose of #PinkTutu adventures for your Monday morning! This week, post number 954 on my www.pink-tutu.com blog is bursting with glitz, glamour, and the undeniable magic of the Big Apple.

Last week, I whisked myself away to the greatest city in the world, packed my pink tutu (of course!), and was ready for a whirlwind of ballet, Broadway, and oh-so-much pink! And boy, did I get it! As I stepped out of the Metro (those iconic yellow carriages always take me back to my first trip to New York) onto the pavement, the city’s energy practically thrummed through my toes. I knew instantly I was in the right place, ready for another week of fabulous finds, thrilling shows, and hopefully, spreading a little bit of pink tutu love throughout Manhattan.

The city, for me, has an amazing energy that buzzes in the air like a constant thrum of a well-played cello string. The scent of freshly baked bagels, the constant rush of cabs and excited tourists, and the constant pulse of Broadway just begging you to take in a show - It’s all so captivating and vibrant. There's this incredible sense of urgency in the air; a constant reminder to seize the day, take opportunities, and, well, put on a fabulous pair of heels and head out into the dazzling neon lights!

My week started with the usual: I ventured into the world of fashion in search of a perfect pair of shoes to twirl in (I can’t ever resist a little shopping spree, and a tutu never looks right without the perfect pair of footwear!). I've been desperately seeking out some new, stylish, and oh-so-pink pumps to really tie my outfits together. Let me tell you, you can’t underestimate a fantastic pair of shoes! They can transform even the simplest tutu-based outfit into a statement piece.

You know what else is brilliant about New York City? You can find almost anything here. The shops! They’re so dazzling! Oh, darling, I simply couldn’t resist that perfectly fluffy, feather-trimmed coat with the scarlet sash; it just begs to be paired with my cherry-red ballet flats. The shop assistants in these boutiques are just as fascinating! It’s always an adventure to speak to these style icons, getting tips on the latest trends and what’s hot and what’s not this season. They always seem to know just the right combination to make me stand out, with a sprinkle of whimsy and, of course, a hint of pink! They are the perfect ambassadors for the fashion world, ensuring you have the right pieces to capture everyone’s gaze as you confidently stroll down 5th Avenue, or maybe a cheeky pit stop in Central Park.

Of course, my trip wouldn’t be complete without indulging in some serious ballet action. Now, let me tell you, ballet here is absolutely top-notch! I absolutely loved seeing a stunning performance of "Giselle" at the Metropolitan Opera House! Talk about captivating! The dancers were incredible, their movements fluid and expressive, with every arabesque a little ballet masterpiece. The intricate costumes, the music, the drama – every detail was exquisitely perfect. Oh, to dance with such artistry and grace – it’s truly a breathtaking art form.

I did, however, indulge in a few beginner ballet classes as well! Those gorgeous studios in the heart of the city provide a welcome break from the frenetic city life and a place to explore the intricacies of pliés and jetés! The teachers here were lovely, inspiring me to push my boundaries, and showing me new techniques I had never learned in Derbyshire. Their dedication to the craft of ballet is infectious. It was a welcome dose of calm amidst the bustling city life, a chance to breathe, reflect, and get back in touch with the heart of why I dance: the joy of movement.

In between these amazing ballet experiences, I had to delve into the theatrical world that is New York City. I found myself, unexpectedly, seated right in the heart of the audience for "Wicked"! Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect; musicals can be a little kitsch sometimes. However, my dear readers, it truly was spectacular. It was funny, moving, visually breathtaking, and a fabulous display of Broadway talent. There’s nothing quite like seeing a performance that effortlessly captivates the whole audience, leaves you humming its catchy tunes, and then inspires you to go out into the world and follow your dreams.

And, just when I thought the week couldn’t get any more enchanting, I had the opportunity to visit the incredible American Ballet Theatre! I managed to sneak into their rehearsal studios and had the chance to chat with the incredibly talented, young dancers. Seeing their dedication and passion for dance, up close and personal, made my heart skip a beat. It was just so inspirational. You could tell that these dancers poured every bit of themselves into their craft, living and breathing ballet.

New York has so many lovely little places to find quiet solace too. I managed to find my own little haven in a charming cafe called ‘La Parisienne’ nestled on a quiet side street off Times Square. It’s almost impossible to tell it’s only a stone’s throw from the heart of Manhattan! Imagine Parisian-style charm in a corner of bustling NYC – a delightful respite. As I sipped my macchiato (the caffeine fix was needed, believe me, this city never sleeps!), I couldn’t resist but jot down some notes in my little notebook. This is the joy of travelling; being inspired by new sights, experiences, and conversations, and feeling compelled to write them all down so that I don’t lose them forever in the swirl of memories!

Speaking of memories, my dearest readers, one of the highlights of the week has to be a glorious ballet-themed afternoon tea in the heart of New York! A sweet treat after a strenuous morning of exploring Central Park! Oh, darling, it was absolute bliss. The elegant hotel setting with delicate china and delicate cucumber sandwiches set the scene, and, of course, I was wearing a lovely pink tutu that simply glittered with all the charm of the afternoon! The tiny sandwiches with their exquisite fillings were the perfect foil for the scrumptious cakes, delicate macaroons, and creamy cupcakes. I did try to have a dainty bite but I must admit I rather devoured the selection with a gleeful sigh!

The highlight, though, had to be the miniature ballerina-shaped pastries with their perfect sugared-pearls on their skirts. And to think, there are people who wouldn't appreciate these fine treats! I always tell people, you know, these delicate pastries are just a taste of what we dancers eat, and we must take them seriously! These petite, adorable snacks are pure artistry! They’re delicate, visually appealing, and bursting with deliciousness; like a little piece of ballet captured in sugared frosting and delicious buttery pastry.

Now, darling readers, I must dash! This whirlwind trip was exhausting but completely wonderful! I have so much more to tell you about all of my fantastic finds; the vintage pink boutique where I bought a beautiful pair of pearl-studded pink pumps, the delectable cheesecake at that little Italian trattoria, the magical street performers that popped up everywhere you turned. New York City just inspires you to find that childlike sense of wonder and to always look for a little spark of magic.

There's just something magical about this city, darling, something about the hustle and bustle that always sparks the fire within. I simply have to get you all dancing in the city, wearing pink tutus of course! Now that’s a challenge worthy of the Pink Tutu blog! Until next week, darling readers, stay fashionable, embrace the sparkle, and never stop dreaming of your very own pink tutu adventure!

Sending love and pink tutu power,

Emma

XOXO
