Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post Number 960 - Monday, 2013-10-28 - She Danced in New York City! 🩰
Hello my dearest Tutuettes! 💖 It's Emma here, writing to you live from the most fabulous city in the world - New York City! Where else could I be on this gloriously sunny Monday morning but sipping my oat latte with a sprinkle of pink sugar, in my favourite pink tutu, naturally, in my swanky hotel room?
You know how much I adore a good New York adventure. And this week has been a particularly splendid one! It's all been so utterly fantastic I can hardly even begin to describe it. The hustle and bustle, the iconic sights, the never-ending array of fabulous outfits (that I may or may not have bought myself a couple of…) but above all, the dance!
It all began last week with a long journey across the pond, travelling straight from my little village in Derbyshire to the Big Apple. Of course, a plane journey with a pink tutu is always an experience! It just makes everyone so much happier. But then the real fun began: Arriving at my hotel room in the heart of Manhattan - it was absolute perfection! Honestly, you could see Times Square from the window, a view I won't ever forget. So chic, with all the pink details I could dream of, I felt so at home. The most lovely floral arrangement on the table too, so sweet. The moment I set my pink suitcase down, I felt this familiar feeling… excitement buzzing inside me, a sensation that’s simply unique to New York.
Ballet Heaven 🩰Now, let me tell you all about the dance! This trip has been absolutely jam-packed with incredible performances. We had opening night at the Metropolitan Opera with a breathtaking production of Swan Lake. The choreography was simply divine and the dancers so graceful. Of course, my favourite scene was the hauntingly beautiful ‘White Swan’ sequence - so mesmerising!
But it wasn’t just ballet that stole the show this week! On Friday evening I went to the most incredible show: Stomp! A spectacular celebration of rhythm and percussive artistry! They literally brought the entire stage to life, incorporating just about everything into their performances - dustbins, brooms, lighters…you name it! It was simply brilliant.
And, on a personal note, I even managed to fit in a ballet class myself! The studio was on Broadway - a real New York dream! The instructor was absolutely fantastic. We had the most glorious class working on extensions, leaps, and even a few turns - my legs may have been a little wobbly after all the travel!
Finding InspirationThe best part about being in New York is the constant influx of creative inspiration. The city literally bursts with creative energy! I mean, where else in the world can you see street artists drawing masterpieces on every corner? It truly inspires you to think outside the box. This weekend I actually started sketching my own ideas for new tutu designs - so excited to bring those back to Derbyshire with me. I have a vision for a collection that combines ballet elegance with the vibrancy of New York City.
Speaking of inspiration, the shopping was, of course, absolutely sensational! I have never seen so many unique, gorgeous boutiques - it truly is a fashion lover’s paradise. The window displays on Fifth Avenue - you’d need a week just to browse through them all. Oh, and there was this fantastic shop in SoHo with these amazing tutu-like skirts! They reminded me of all those dancers from the ballet, except these ones were covered in shimmering sequins and colourful beading. Honestly, I almost bought the entire shop!
Discovering New York City's SecretsI don’t want to give too much away, but there are a few more secrets about my trip I can’t wait to tell you! I spent a magical afternoon exploring the charming, cobblestone streets of Greenwich Village. Honestly, it felt like stepping back in time. And did I mention the quaint cafes, delicious cakes and scrumptious coffees? Oh, and there was a vintage store overflowing with incredible outfits, including the most dazzling sequined skirt I ever laid eyes on! I just knew I had to have it. Imagine it, my darlings, paired with my pink tutu! It was absolutely perfect!
But beyond the shopping, the dance and the glamour, what I love most about this city is the feeling of magic in the air, a kind of electricity that’s infectious! The friendly strangers on the streets, the bustling energy in every neighbourhood… it’s simply intoxicating.
And yes, you know me - of course, I was dancing in the streets! Who could resist? As soon as the rhythm hit my feet, I just couldn’t help myself!
I even met a lovely young woman dressed in a beautiful green tutu on my travels around the city, she had travelled from Chicago, she loved my pink one, it was wonderful to hear her story - we even swapped Instagram details.
My time in New York may be coming to an end for now, but this trip has ignited a whole new spark in me. I’m coming home with so much inspiration and countless new memories to share with you all. I’ve seen how dance, fashion and kindness can truly bring people together. I am returning home more passionate than ever to bring the beauty of ballet and the joy of pink tutus to the world!
Stay tuned, dear Tutuettes, because I’ll be sharing more adventures and, most importantly, some exciting news very soon. Until next Monday, let your inner tutu twirl freely. 💖✨💖 Emma
