Pink Tutu Adventures in the Big Apple: #1194 - The City That Never Sleeps...Or Dances!

Hey, darlings! Emma here, back from another fabulous adventure in the concrete jungle! This week's blog is dedicated to New York City, that iconic, whirlwind of a city that I've fallen utterly in love with. It's buzzing, it's bright, and most importantly, it's absolutely brimming with inspiration for this tutu-loving girl.

So, pour yourself a cuppa, settle in, and let me tell you about my latest escapades...

A Monday in New York: An Ode to the Metropolitan

You know what they say, darlings, "There's nothing quite like a Monday in New York." Well, I wouldn't necessarily agree! Mondays are pretty fantastic anywhere, really, especially when you get to kick them off in the greatest city in the world.

My week started with a sunrise yoga class at my favourite studio near Central Park. It was a breath of fresh air (literally) after a rather wild weekend in the city, and just the tonic to kickstart a week full of ballet, shopping, and oh yes, even more dancing!

Speaking of ballet, one of the first things I do in every new city is visit a local ballet school. In New York, my go-to is the School of American Ballet. Now, darlings, I know you're thinking this place must be super serious... well, it is, but there's an underlying sense of joy and excitement. It truly feels like a sanctuary for all things dance, with the most amazing dancers from all over the world. Watching their practice sessions was pure inspiration; every pirouette, every leap felt so effortlessly graceful. They've totally got my dance spirit going!

Onwards to Broadway and the City's Best Bites

After the ballet studio, I headed straight to Times Square – a real must-see for any first-time visitor! Now, I'll be honest, the sheer magnitude of the flashing lights and bustling crowds almost overwhelmed me a little. I grabbed myself a warm pretzel with a heaping amount of mustard, a New York staple if ever there was one!

My evening was dedicated to one of New York's biggest highlights: Broadway. You know I can't resist a show! And trust me, it was one for the ages. The Lion King. Talk about an extravaganza! I loved every moment: the vibrant costumes, the fantastic singing, and the incredible puppets – they totally brought those African plains to life right in front of me. You know I had to channel my inner Simba with some spontaneous roaring!

But darling, the highlight of my night was truly seeing the costumes in person – especially that enormous Mufasa puppet! It was an incredible reminder of the creativity and technical skill that goes into creating such spectacular live productions. Oh, and did I mention the incredible orchestra? It was simply magical.

Afterwards, I enjoyed a late-night wander around the city. A quick pit stop at the little Italian deli for a slice of cheesy pizza – classic New York - before ending my evening at a hidden jazz bar near Central Park. The vibe was all smoky, romantic and low-key with just enough twinkling lights to keep things charming. I'll be back for sure.

The Power of Pink Tutus & Retail Therapy

The next day, darling, was all about indulging in New York's vibrant fashion scene! Let’s face it, who doesn't love a little retail therapy?

First stop, a legendary spot for all things feminine, the flagship Bloomingdales. There were just so many dresses I wanted to try on - there’s always so much color and joy at that store. I actually ended up trying on a tutu, it was quite amazing! It reminded me just how much I love these whimsical pieces. Of course, you know what happened, I walked out with not just a dress but also the most adorable pastel pink ruffled top. You can never have too much pink, darlings.

But for the main course of my retail adventures, it had to be a trip to the iconic flagship store of Macy’s, which happens to be the largest department store in the world! The architecture alone is breath-taking, and let's be honest, their beauty and makeup departments are heaven! Oh, and their bakery smells divine too! (Note to self: maybe next time try their cakes too!)

That day ended at one of New York's many fabulous ballet stores, where I got myself a brand-new pair of pointe shoes! They're actually the exact same brand as the ones the ballerinas at the School of American Ballet were wearing, I'm feeling very lucky. But more on that in a future blog.

On the Move with the Metropolitan's Symphony of Subways

You can't be in New York without taking the metro, darling. And boy, it's quite a whirlwind. I don't think I've ever felt so much energy packed into such a confined space. But the best part? There’s always something new to see. Every ride is an adventure. Every corner you turn feels like stepping into a brand new world! It's all part of New York's captivating rhythm, a continuous and exhilarating dance of chaos and magic. I could happily spend a week just wandering the city’s metro system!

Oh, I did find myself singing on a busy train journey, to be honest I got a few stares from those around me. But I say, more pink tutus need to be dancing on the streets of New York. It would add some serious color to a monochrome city. I always aim to be the most flamboyant, colorful presence in the room, but I truly feel it is New York's true calling.

Memories, Mayhem & New York's Heart

That evening was an exciting culmination of all the week’s adventures: a beautiful Broadway show (Chicago!) followed by a decadent meal at one of the many rooftop bars in the city. My advice? Choose a night where the city lights twinkle and the views are magnificent. The beauty of a rooftop bar overlooking New York is something that’ll be forever etched into my memory, darlings. It’s such a romantic way to take in the energy of the city that truly never sleeps, but most definitely has an infectious heart, especially after midnight when all of the skyscrapers light up.

I wouldn't call myself an early bird, but as the sun rose over the Manhattan skyline on my final day, it struck me. This trip, and all the moments, sights, and sounds of this city, felt like they had been painted in bright, bold colours. New York had woven itself into the fabric of my soul and inspired a new confidence. There's a raw, unapologetic energy in this city, a spirit that echoes through its streets and into the heart of every visitor. New York has left an imprint on my heart and an unmistakable echo of its spirit. I’m pretty sure, I will be back.

So, dear readers, I’m off to the airport, but this adventure won’t be forgotten! It’s given me an energy burst, I’ve recharged, re-inspired and reinvigorated. Next week will be dedicated to reflecting on everything that New York City has offered me: the culture, the style and the vibrant people that fill its streets. I think you can say this pink tutu blogger has left a little sparkle behind, in this fabulous metropolis. Until next time, stay twirling and make the most of the pink magic wherever you may be!
