Pink Tutu Blog: New York City - #1233

Monday 21st January 2019

Helloooo my darling tutus! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina blogger, and I’m bursting with excitement to share all about my latest adventures in the dazzling, sparkling, magical city of New York! Oh, it’s a dream come true, and every day feels like a new ballet sequence unfolding before my very eyes.

First, let’s address the pink elephant in the room… Yes, it's been a while! My adventures in Derbyshire, then my incredible trip to Paris, and then the frantic run-up to the Christmas season – oh my goodness, my tutu almost flew off! – has kept me rather busy. However, here I am, back in the swing of things with my weekly blog post, all ready to whisk you off on another fantastical journey with yours truly.

This week I’m sharing the tale of a ballerina’s whirlwind adventure in the city that never sleeps. It was a glorious day. The sun was shining – even in January! – the streets were filled with the hustle and bustle of New Yorkers going about their daily business, and, well, you just had to see how my fabulous pink tutu cut through the city's gray!

A Day of Ballerina Bliss

I had a busy day planned, starting with a sunrise metro journey. Yes, I know what you’re thinking – the metro is notoriously jam-packed and you’d need to be a contortionist to fit your tutu in there – but believe me, there is nothing more freeing than being whisked through the subterranean tunnels of New York, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of city life, with my tutu twirling joyously above the throngs.

First up was a visit to the glorious Barneys New York, which was having its annual winter sale. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed. My favourite thing? The shoe department, naturally! Imagine walls lined with hundreds of beautiful ballet shoes, in every colour imaginable! Oh, the joy! I may have gone a little overboard, but I managed to keep it under control, selecting a beautiful pair of ivory satin pumps, perfect for dancing through the cobbled streets of New York and even more perfect for adding a little bit of elegance to my evening outfit.

From Barneys, I headed for my absolute favourite ballet studio in all of Manhattan: Steps on Broadway. Now, for those who don’t know, this legendary dance studio is a true haven for ballerinas – it’s been a beloved part of the city since 1979. From professional dancers to absolute beginners, everyone can find a class to fit their style.

I’ve always dreamed of dancing at Steps, and my dream finally came true on this blissful New York morning! It felt like every muscle in my body woke up and sang – it was pure bliss, all those pirouettes and grand jetés – oh, my heart danced along with me! After class, the studio was buzzing with excitement, everyone exchanging stories about their favourite routines and teachers. It was such a joy to meet all those other passionate dance lovers, I just had to treat myself to some ballet-themed goodies in their shop – you know me, I can’t resist a pink tutu-shaped keyring!

The Magic of Broadway

But my day wasn’t over yet! In the evening, I was going to experience the magic of Broadway, one of the highlights of any trip to New York, in my opinion. And it wasn’t just any show – I was lucky enough to have snagged tickets for "The Lion King"! My heart was filled with anticipation as we made our way through the throngs of people heading towards the iconic Times Square – I mean, how can you resist the bright lights, the roaring laughter and the incredible spectacle?

It felt like stepping into a fairytale – the sets, the costumes, the music… it was a sensory explosion of delight! The show was a pure masterpiece, and the incredible performances had me mesmerized. Watching those talented artists transform into these powerful and beautiful animals was something I’ll never forget. Of course, it was a total triumph. My favourite scene? When the young Simba’s “shadow self”, or is it “pride shadow”? whatever it is - is revealed, to be, wait for it… (I'm saying no more!), it was the perfect marriage of creativity, artistry and pure showmanship – truly captivating!

And then, it was over! I left the theatre feeling inspired, awestruck, and, let's be honest, exhausted – all that singing, dancing and acting is incredibly tiring. But the magic lingered in the air, as I wandered through the vibrant streets of Manhattan. Every single building seemed to light up a bit brighter as I passed, reflecting the vibrant joy of a successful evening out.

Food for the Soul (and for the Stomach!)

As any discerning ballerina knows, a great show calls for a good meal to recover. So, I wandered towards the trendy Greenwich Village district, my mind full of all the dazzling scenes from the show. And my goodness, what a feast!

We found a darling little Italian restaurant nestled between charming boutiques and chic art galleries, the scent of freshly baked bread filling the air, as though inviting us inside. I opted for a plate of pasta topped with succulent mushrooms and creamy sauce – the perfect mix of light and fulfilling after a long night. It was the perfect way to unwind after a hectic day!

And before I knew it, I was on the train, watching the neon lights flash by as the night faded into the early morning. As I drifted off to sleep, I could already sense that New York City would have something special in store for me. And just like a dancer prepping for her next performance, I was eager to embrace the next chapter in this amazing city.

Pink Tutu Essentials

As usual, I couldn’t resist a few stylish additions to my wardrobe:

  • A gorgeous pair of sparkling pink ballet shoes – for twirling under the New York sky
  • A pink sequinned purse, just perfect for all my little essentials – it's big enough for my phone, but compact enough to fit into my ballet bag
  • A soft pink shawl, perfect for keeping out the New York chills and making me feel oh so elegant – you never know what the weather’s going to be in New York, do you?

The Pink Tutu Philosophy

Don’t be afraid to stand out, darling! Embrace your inner ballerina. Spin around in the city streets, strike a pose, twirl, leap and bound with the utmost confidence and joy – remember, it's all about living life with passion and letting your heart lead the way. I always tell my followers, life is a dance – it's a chance to celebrate all the beauty and wonder around you, so embrace the moments big and small, always adding a touch of pink sparkle to everything you do.
