#PinkTutuBlogNYC: New York City Lights, Big Dreams and Pink Tutus! (Post #1406)
Monday, 16th May 2022
Good morning, darlings! It's Emma here, back from a whirlwind weekend in the Big Apple, ready to spill the tea on all the fabulous happenings, the must-see shows, and, of course, my latest tutu adventures! This week's post is a bit different. While I love sharing my dance adventures, it's time to dive into a different side of #PinkTutuBlogNYC – the side that goes beyond pirouettes and sparkles, and dives into the fashion, theatre, and the pure joy of exploring this iconic city.
Let's get down to business! I arrived in New York City on Thursday, feeling like a bright pink flamingo landing in a vibrant city jungle. My trusty tutu, a glorious explosion of bubblegum pink, made a statement as soon as I emerged from the airport.
Speaking of statement-making, New Yorkers, you're a force of nature! The city thrummed with a contagious energy. From the chic ladies with their power suits and statement heels, to the cool, effortless style of the hipster guys, there's an inspiring individuality to every outfit I saw. And the street performers? Oh my, I can't get enough! Ballet dancers in full tutus busting out their moves on the pavement, contortionists twisting their bodies into impossible positions – I found myself captivated by their artistry. It reminded me how much life's all about stepping outside your comfort zone and expressing yourself through movement, art, or even a sassy fashion choice.
Showtime in the City That Never Sleeps
As any seasoned theatre lover knows, New York is a stage waiting to happen! My weekend started with a breathtaking performance at Lincoln Center. The piece was a modern interpretation of classic ballets with a touch of daring contemporary flair. The lighting and sets were absolutely stunning – imagine vibrant splashes of colour reflecting off shimmering tulle, adding a layer of magic to the already captivating performance. My favourite part, though? The final ensemble number where a wave of dancers swirled on stage, their tulle skirts a captivating dance of pink and silver. Honestly, I think I shed a little happy tear (it’s always a good day when you’re swept away by the power of dance!).
Speaking of inspiring artistry, I ventured into the magical realm of Broadway on Saturday evening. I'd heard rumours about a brand-new musical with a dazzling pink set, and, naturally, I had to investigate. Imagine my delight! It was everything I dreamed of. I won't spoil the plot for you, but let's just say there were vibrant dance sequences, catchy songs, and enough sparkly pink costumes to make a grown woman (ahem, me) squeal with excitement. And let’s be honest, if it's a pink tutu in question, it doesn't take much for this ballerina to lose her mind.
Shopping Therapy and a Touch of Pink Magic
No trip to New York City is complete without a little retail therapy. While the Fifth Avenue boutiques with their sky-high prices beckoned, my heart yearned for the vintage treasures that hidden shops in Soho promised. I spent the afternoon rummaging through racks of retro dresses, swooning over statement jewellery, and – you guessed it – finding the most amazing pink sequined tutu ever! (I couldn't resist.) I practically bounced down the street, the sequined skirt twirling around my knees, feeling like I'd found my own piece of magic in the city.
Subway Style
Did you know that New York's subway system is an actual underground catwalk? Forget those sleek train journeys you'd find on the Continent – here, every single person is putting on a fashion show! I spent many hours navigating those famous underground corridors, soaking up the mix of casual, glam, and just plain outlandish style choices. Even though I am definitely partial to my signature pink, I was impressed with the diversity and individuality in each of the looks. And the best part? The camaraderie! People weren't just rushing to get from point A to point B; they were interacting, smiling, even getting inspired by each other’s styles.
And here’s a tip: If you want to have a laugh, keep an eye out for the occasional flash mob performance – some of the most skilled performers I have seen! These pop-up bursts of dance energy will literally have you bouncing your way to your next destination! It's proof that sometimes the most memorable moments are unplanned, a little quirky, and definitely sprinkled with some sparkling energy.
Embracing the New York Spirit: Where Everyone's a Ballerina
You know how it is - we all feel a bit awkward on the dance floor when it’s just the usual suspects at home. We think “well, what will other people think?!” The beauty of NYC, in my eyes? Everyone here is a ballerina in their own way, from the corporate CEOs strutting confidently to the students bounding off to class in their oversized backpacks. It's all about owning your personal style, embracing your own unique rhythms, and not being afraid to get lost in the beautiful chaos that is the dance of life!
I think, somehow, the city gives you permission to shine. Maybe it’s because everyone is so confident and so passionate about things! You feel encouraged to dance in your own style. It makes me believe that with enough courage and confidence, maybe… just maybe… every single person on Earth will be happy to don a pink tutu!
Monday morning musings
Back to the mundane reality of Derbyshire, UK, today, and trust me, my brain is overflowing with thoughts and dreams! I already know what my next tutu purchase will be. (Yep, I've started on that!) It'll be the most amazing New York inspired, glittery creation with nods to the city's skyline and maybe even a touch of Broadway flair. I'm hoping to find some fantastic fabrics this week – so stay tuned for more photos and design inspiration!
Final thoughts (because it’s a ballet, not a fashion show) :
I can't say it enough: if you're ever in doubt, always choose a pink tutu. They're a symbol of joy, of finding your inner child, and of the pure, boundless beauty that ballet brings. And New York City? It's the most inspiring place to wear one.
But above all? The best things in life aren't just about what we see in front of us but how it makes us feel, right down to the twirls!
Until next Monday, darlings. Be good, be bold, be pink! And remember – everyone has the power to dance.
With love and glitter,
Emma x
