Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #1453 - Monday, 10th April, 2023

Hello lovelies! 👋 It’s Emma here, and I'm finally back in New York City, the Big Apple, the concrete jungle, the place where dreams come true... or at least where lots of great shopping happens! 🛍️

I’m here to tell you all about my whirlwind weekend, and, of course, share the adventures of this pink-loving tutu-wearing gal as she explores this amazing metropolis. I've always said, there's nowhere quite like it. I'm completely smitten with the city's energy, and, well, to be completely honest, I’m completely smitten with the shops. But we’ll get to that later.

This trip has been particularly special for me because I got to dance for a beautiful charity gala. I love combining my passion for ballet with my love of travel. After all, what’s a pink tutu without a performance, eh? 🩰

First things first: arriving at JFK was a bit of a rush, but in a good way! There's always something magical about stepping into a new city, a fresh set of possibilities. The first thing that hits you when you land in NYC is the incredible hustle and bustle. Everyone’s rushing somewhere. This energy is completely infectious, I find. It pushes you to want to do more, be more, experience more.

Anyway, my weekend adventure in this city that never sleeps began as soon as I left the airport. Of course, the first thing I had to do was find the nearest Metro station to grab a ride. What can I say? There’s just something special about travelling on the Metro, a subterranean odyssey amongst hundreds of people, each going their separate way but bound by the common thread of travel. I'd have been quite happy to stay down there exploring the labyrinthine tunnels, but my dance performance awaited.

The gala was held in an absolutely gorgeous old theatre in Brooklyn, and the space was absolutely stunning. They'd set up the most elegant backdrop with luxurious decorations – think glittery chandeliers, opulent velvet curtains, and rows upon rows of plush chairs. As you walked into the hall, there was even a pianist playing some beautiful classical music! My heart skipped a beat the minute I saw the stage! I knew it was going to be special.

But before my performance, it was time for my usual pre-show ritual – checking out the backstage area. I always find this fascinating! It’s always a little chaotic behind the curtain - you've got all the crew buzzing around, dancers getting into costume, and people making last-minute adjustments. There's a real hum of energy in the air as everyone comes together to put on the most amazing performance. And I'm not talking about my show! I'm just one ballerina in this amazing ensemble cast. You know, all those stunning performances by ballerinas wearing stunning tutus? And we're not all wearing pink, mind you. But some of us do.

Anyway, it was great to finally slip on my sparkling pink tutu. As I put it on, I felt a familiar wave of confidence washing over me. You know what they say about a pink tutu: it has magical powers. Or maybe I'm just a bit crazy about pink tutus. And let me tell you, you can never go wrong with pink. There is something magical about a shade of pink. And don’t even get me started on the feeling of swirling in a tutu on a stage, under the warm light of a spotlight! Pure joy.

My performance went wonderfully. It felt surreal to dance beneath the shimmering chandeliers, and everyone seemed to be completely enraptured. You know how it is, I have this feeling of pure bliss and focus as soon as I take my first pirouette. It's something magical that's really hard to describe. Afterward, everyone was applauding – the room seemed to be buzzing with excitement and applause, which made me feel really happy. This feeling of accomplishment, it's really indescribable.

You know, my favourite part of this whole trip? Aside from all the shopping, of course… Oh, yes! My day was far from over! After the performance, I had time to explore the area a little bit. I walked along the waterfront and breathed in the salty air – the iconic smell of the harbour.

Then, because, well, there's never a time that's not a good time to have a little treat, I decided to grab some delicious ice cream at an amazing vintage ice-cream parlor – they had all the retro flavours you could imagine. It felt like a little step back in time, it was just gorgeous. But no, the decor wasn’t pink – just your usual vintage, with red leather seats and red stripes, and some of those fantastic vintage milkshake mixers you never see any more. If you ever come here, make sure you try it! It's a definite must-visit.

Now, onto what we've all been waiting for: the shopping. Honestly, shopping is always my absolute favourite thing to do in any city – it's the ultimate stress reliever, and in NYC, the shopping experience is unparalleled. It's something special, a truly magical experience that no other city can quite match.

One thing about New York: it never lets you down. I just spent an hour exploring one amazing vintage boutique, and my bank account was practically begging for mercy. I found some truly incredible vintage outfits, so I couldn't help but give them a little pink love! Let’s just say my suitcase was definitely bulging on my way out of the shop. They even had a whole rack dedicated to tulle tutus. Honestly, they really must understand the needs of my fellow pink-tutu-wearing gal. 😉 This is a secret shop for true lovers of tutus. It has everything! All kinds of beautiful pink and vintage tutus that made my heart skip a beat.

New York has an aura of freedom, of boldness. And for me, it’s all about fashion - that fearless and fun combination. I think that's one of the reasons why I'm so in love with this city. This feeling that anything can happen here, and I’m so inspired to embrace all that it has to offer! I spent an incredible evening taking in a show on Broadway. There's no other experience quite like being seated in a magnificent theatre watching some truly exceptional performers take to the stage.

Talking about incredible experiences, I had another surprise adventure lined up. As a fellow fashion enthusiast, I’m a huge fan of everything fashion – you know, from high street fashion to the more exquisite styles from the world's biggest fashion designers. Now, you guys know I’m a huge fan of pink and, of course, a tutu-loving gal, and I was simply enthralled to attend the launch of a new collection at a trendy fashion studio. Let's just say the experience was like something out of a movie, but it was definitely even better! It was such a special occasion – and a total dream come true – to have this experience. The fashion was bold, the colours were vibrant, and, of course, there was a huge section dedicated to a whole range of beautiful pink outfits. If you know me, you’ll know I can't help but have a little splurge every now and then when it comes to anything pink!

However, I had a little surprise for the designer. As soon as I stepped through the doors, they noticed the beautiful, pale pink tutu I was wearing. The fashionistas who attended the launch, including a lot of the city's elite socialites, absolutely loved the way my pink tutu flowed with my vintage velvet pink jacket, a bit of sparkly silver jewellery, and pink-toned, patent leather Mary Janes, all in harmony. Let’s just say I got a lot of admiring glances. Honestly, some of them really inspired me! Now, I've got all these new ideas brewing for my own future designs. The way people seemed to admire my pink tutu and my entire outfit, it gave me this extra confidence to push my own creativity even further, to think of more and more innovative ideas, more and more amazing outfits to show off my love of pink tutus! And maybe next time, it'll be a more avant-garde kind of tutu – a more contemporary style to shake things up. You know, it’s always important to step out of the box, eh? It's about finding what works for you and then finding what suits your unique style. And to be completely honest, sometimes it’s just good to be a little silly! That’s why I love all these designers; they push the boundaries of what fashion is all about!

Let’s face it: my motto is to dance like no one’s watching and wear what you love, no matter what it is. My dream? To get everyone wearing a pink tutu at some point! What’s that you say? Well, it sounds like a mission! What’s stopping us?

After all this fashion, shopping, and food-related adventures, there's only one thing left to do: head back to Derbyshire! I'm always feeling so excited about being back home after travelling.

But as I boarded the plane home, I couldn't help but feel that familiar New York energy pulsating through my veins, and this love for all things pink is stronger than ever! This time, I’ve picked up even more ideas and new experiences that’ll add a little magic to my own pink world. My goal is to always seek new inspirations from my journeys and try to weave that magic into my own life and share it with you all. So stay tuned, lovelies. New adventures are already calling me!
