Hello my lovely tutu-wearers! It’s Emma here, back from the vibrant city of New York. What a whirlwind! It's safe to say this week was absolutely jam-packed with tutu-tastic experiences, from the grandeur of Broadway to the bustling charm of SoHo, all wrapped up with the quintessential New York flavour of, well, pink tutus, naturally!
You see, my darling tutus are travelling with me across the globe and it's absolutely phenomenal. Imagine a beautiful, twirling pink cloud as it gracefully drifts from London to Paris, then onto Barcelona, back to London, followed by New York, and then… Who knows where the next tutu-stop will be? It's all so exciting!
From Derbyshire to NYC, The Tutu Traverses On!
Before I dive into the week’s shenanigans, let's just say, getting to New York City always feels a bit like stepping into a fairy-tale movie. It’s that dramatic. The buzz, the lights, the towering buildings... it truly is electric.
This time I arrived, tutu in tow, at LaGuardia Airport. I love arriving at that airport, its personality suits New York so perfectly - big, brash, exciting and absolutely bustling. There was something wonderful about grabbing a coffee in my sparkly pink tutu with my matching tutu backpack and gazing at all the tired business people with their smart suits. No-one could believe I was getting ready for a full day in New York, and the “Oh! She is in a tutu!” look in their eyes is utterly priceless. (Maybe this is where my "Everyone In A Pink Tutu" dream starts, haha!)
Then, it was onto the New York Metro. A magical journey, as always, that gave me plenty of time to admire my fellow New Yorkers. What a fabulous array of sartorial delight! I had to make notes on every look to use as inspo in my upcoming blog. After all, being a pink-tutu fashionista in New York is a fashion show itself! And speaking of inspiration…
Oh, the Shows! Oh, The Ballet! Oh, The Clothes!
I headed straight for Broadway on Monday and boy, did it blow my socks off, tutually speaking! I spent my Monday night captivated by “The Phantom Of The Opera”, that’s the biggest theatre classic ever, if you haven't seen it, you’re missing out! My darling, twirling, tutus simply danced with joy during those gorgeous arias and powerful dramatic scenes. It was amazing!
Afterward, I wandered around, enchanted by the flashing billboards, buzzing energy and incredible mix of personalities, it’s truly an amazing place. Of course, there’s the usual flurry of tourists and the sounds of sirens… but the New York thrill comes from being a part of the frenetic, fun and frenetic energy around you, a ballet in itself.
A Fashionista’s Delight and The Power Of Pink!
Of course, I couldn't visit New York without paying a pilgrimage to the SoHo fashion stores - the home of trendy fashion and independent brands. I confess, a small part of me wishes I could live here, it’s such a fashion lover’s paradise! And let’s not forget - this week’s colour theme, pink, couldn't be more appropriate - SoHo has got some stunning pink shops and displays that just had me spinning with delight! Pink was absolutely everywhere in a hundred different shades!
Let me just take a moment to confess to all my tutu fans, I fell for some glorious pieces, my new purchases have just been a bit of a spree. My shopping spree included a beautiful tulle, pink floral skirt and matching top, some stunning vintage floral pink dresses that screamed a 1980s revival! Plus some beautiful shoes... pink shoes of course. Because nothing says New York fashion like a perfect pink-tutu wardrobe! A girl has got to dress up for New York, especially for a dance class, that's just the New York rules!
Ballet, Dance & Tutu Classes, My Heart And Sole!
I was lucky enough to land a coveted spot in a class at the renowned Steps on Broadway studio. And it truly did live up to the hype! Imagine all the wonderful grace of classical ballet meets contemporary urban dance – Steps has such a mix of amazing dancers who really understand the beautiful language of movement. They showed us all their steps, but for me it's not so much about doing every step perfectly as being completely present with every single movement and exploring how a pink tutu feels. Imagine this: It’s the ultimate tutus vs. the city ballet. Honestly, who needs Tchaikovsky when you've got a beautiful New York sunset shining through those massive glass studio windows!
Later that night I treated myself to another magical dance extravaganza at Lincoln Center – a delightful evening of “The Sleeping Beauty.” My tutus twirled and skipped right along to the gorgeous music - such a treat! I found myself dancing along in my seat. You just can't help yourself in the presence of such exquisite ballet choreography, the music and dancing – my soul just bursts into a joyous twirl.
And before I signed off for the night, I found my inner tutus in Central Park, an unexpected discovery as a small band of street performers did a fabulous take on The Nutcracker suite - in the heart of Manhattan, it was magical, a whimsical scene in the city’s glorious Central Park. You simply never know what's round the next corner here!
The Tutu’s Travel Tales & What's Coming Up?
I am officially back on my way to Derbyshire - the UK really feels so quiet and still in comparison to New York. But at least, here I can be the queen of tutus in the countryside for a while, just me, my little dogs, and my ballet studio. Oh, the joy! You'll never believe, but it seems Derbyshire's having a vintage dress up party, the village is going to celebrate, it's going to be fantastic, I simply must try to convince them all to dress up in pink! Now there's a challenge.
