Hello my darlings!

It's Emma here, writing to you live from the Big Apple, New York City! Can you believe it? Post number 1643 for Pink Tutu Blog NYC and I am still absolutely smitten with this amazing city.

Today, the air crackled with excitement, even before I stepped off the metro onto 5th Avenue. This week, New York City is playing host to the American Ballet Theatre's annual Fall Gala, and I simply had to be here.

As soon as I saw the "Pink Tutu" theme for this week, I knew it was going to be epic! And let me tell you, it hasn't disappointed.

Since landing here on Saturday, my days have been a whirl of tutus and tea. I have been busy exploring the city, buying myself the cutest little pink satin gloves, and doing what I do best: inspiring others to embrace the pink-tutu-life.

Let me give you a sneak peek into my whirlwind New York City weekend:

On Saturday, I found myself wandering through the hallowed halls of the New York Public Library - a breathtaking building bursting with history. The architecture is simply magnificent - all grand marble arches and vaulted ceilings, which reminded me a little of the library at home in Derbyshire - although theirs isn’t quite so grand, naturally!

After an afternoon of enjoying the quiet beauty of the books, I found myself in a little vintage shop that just had to be destined for me. It was bursting with colourful dresses and stylish accessories. I even discovered a pair of sparkling pink ballet shoes, just like the ones I wore for my first performance, that I had to purchase!

As dusk fell, I popped into a charming little tea shop to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea. After the excitement of the vintage shop, I craved a bit of quiet. The shop had the most delightful décor. Think pastel pink walls and plush velvet armchairs, all decked out in bows and floral prints. A true slice of vintage English tea party heaven.

After my tea, I had the pleasure of catching up with some lovely bloggers who, luckily, have similar pink taste as myself. We got together at a nearby cocktail bar for an evening of fun, laughter, and of course, more pink!

Sunday dawned bright and, oh, so pink.

I was so excited because the ballet was just a few hours away, so I spent the morning making a pilgrimage to Times Square, which I had to see before leaving. It really is a city within a city, a place that truly makes your head spin. All those giant neon screens with the flashing ads - It’s definitely a must-see if you're visiting New York! I even found myself in front of one of these giant screens, posing for photos while wearing my little pink tulle skirt and ballerina bun - of course!

For lunch, I popped into an adorable French café near my hotel, where I tucked into a delicious croque monsieur. They even brought me a little complimentary bowl of cherries - they must have been able to see the twinkle in my eyes when they spotted my bright pink ballerina bag.

Later, I popped out of the metro onto 41st Street and 8th Avenue, and immediately knew that this was a very special day indeed. The theatre glowed in the dusky New York City sky and even in the bright glow of all the neon lights, it stood proud, a glorious and stunning building, filled with the energy and dreams of performers from all around the globe.

Inside, I saw the gorgeous ladies dressed in their tutus for the performance and knew I was about to be part of something extraordinary. I slipped into my seat and sank into the plush velvet, all thoughts of my Derbyshire home melting away in that magic moment.

Oh, and by the way, the gala was magical! There were the most beautiful costumes, including a shimmering golden pink bodice that caught my eye from the moment the dancer entered the stage. There was an array of ballet dancers who are at the top of their game, with such amazing grace and power, they truly captivated my attention. I was moved by the performance. My eyes were glued to every step, every glance, and the emotion behind each gesture struck a chord in my heart, making me wish that I was back on stage in front of the audience.

To end a beautiful weekend of theatre and tutu magic, I visited a very special bakery in SoHo. They had these decadent cakes adorned with beautiful sugar flowers, a delicate confection that I’m planning on trying to recreate myself when I get home. It was a lovely way to say “au revoir” to New York City for a little while - though you can be sure I’ll be back very soon, this gorgeous city is forever calling my name.

You can’t have New York without a little London, so before I headed back to Derbyshire this morning, I spent an afternoon wandering around the most magnificent store in the world - Liberty's. It's absolutely gorgeous - all stained glass windows and oak-panelled rooms. I even stumbled upon an old fashioned tea room on the second floor with an entire section dedicated to vintage textiles. Talk about vintage-lover's paradise!

I'll never forget the exquisite collection of textiles and the stunning fabrics, especially the vibrant silk dress which reminded me of an opulent pink-tutu ballerina! But, as you can probably tell, the pink-tutu in me really was screaming "BUY IT!". But alas, it just wasn’t in the budget for this little blogger’s purse.

I hope you have enjoyed a glimpse into my little pink world this week. This New York trip will always have a special place in my heart, so stay tuned next week for a new adventure as I continue my journey through the world of ballet and pink! There are so many wonderful theatres and ballet companies in New York, so many opportunities to catch an amazing show when you're in the Big Apple.

Of course, no ballet blog is complete without a brief guide to all things New York ballet! Here's my list of ballet companies, performance locations and how to see their amazing performances:

• New York City Ballet is known for their sleek, stylish, and innovative choreography. Based in the stunningly beautiful David H. Koch Theater, this theatre really is something to behold. Performances range from classical repertoires like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty to choreographed shows such as Tchaikovsky’s Pas de Deux and Symphony in C. And their performances are always met with raucous applause.

  • American Ballet Theatre The ABT has become one of the most famous ballet companies in the world. This prestigious company boasts some of the greatest dancers in the world. From grand ballets such as Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Don Quixote to contemporary pieces by leading choreographers, this ballet company will keep you captivated and enthralled by its talent and the drama that each dance tells.

  • Ballet Hispánico. This stunning company presents work by Hispanic and Latino choreographers. They have performances throughout the year in the City Center in Midtown Manhattan and also put on an annual summer festival. Ballet Hispánico uses dance as a tool for building community. Their repertoire consists of vibrant dances, beautiful and striking performances that often explore topics of immigration, cultural identity, and celebrations of cultural diversity.

Here’s a little insight into what makes the American Ballet Theatre’s Annual Fall Gala a real crowd-pleaser:

This is the biggest event of the fall in the American ballet world. It is a night when ballet dancers and stars from all across America, from Broadway and the world of performing arts all come together in one spectacular celebration. You will often see the top names in ballet and Broadway performance, such as Misty Copeland.

You’ll always see stunningly beautiful costumes, from the sparkling pink tutus to beautiful custom designed outfits by the best fashion designers from the world of New York, London and Paris. The designers really know how to make the ballet dancers sparkle.

Buying your ballet tickets can be done in a couple of ways, but if you want the best seat and the best prices, the following methods work well:

• Book online most theatre websites allow you to book in advance. You can also get your tickets delivered electronically or use your e-ticket for entry into the performance on the day of the show. It is usually possible to get discount tickets on line or through various websites that sell off leftover theatre seats - but this usually happens at very short notice, so if you are set on a particular performance it is wise to book as early as possible.

• Call the theatre. You can always buy your tickets by calling the box office of your chosen venue. However, remember that you won't be able to choose your seats, so the best thing to do is call and speak to one of their helpful customer service team, they can usually help with special requests and offers, such as discounted tickets for children or seniors, so it’s worth asking.

Here are a couple of tips on how you can make the most of your trip if you’re a tutu-lover like me and you’re coming to New York.

• Try some ballet classes in New York - it's the perfect way to experience the New York City ballet scene from the inside! You don’t need to be a pro, and they usually offer different levels of experience, from beginners to more experienced classes for dancers who want to take their technique to the next level. New York is the city that never sleeps so you can find a dance studio pretty much everywhere. You might even spot the next American ballet superstar if you look hard enough. There are lots of options for different ages too. And it doesn’t stop there, there’s even a ballet studio just for dogs! There are lots of studios across the city, it's very popular.

• Catch a performance of course this goes without saying! See as many ballet performances as your budget will allow! Take advantage of New York’s incredible range of theatre performances and book those tickets and get ready to be swept away by an evening of elegance and enchantment!

  • *Treat yourself to a tutu - * Let’s face it, what is New York without some amazing retail therapy? There is so much amazing fashion and clothing to discover and I think it's the perfect opportunity to invest in your own pink tulle tutu. There are many fantastic boutiques in New York. One boutique which is known for tutus and gorgeous dance-wear is the Dance Shop, located in Manhattan. I just love the range they have.

    However, don’t just focus on the big shops, there are some beautiful, and often independent, boutique shops and department stores that stock tutus and gorgeous clothes, too. You really could get lost for hours just window shopping!

• Dress for the occasion. Of course, this goes without saying! If you're attending a ballet performance you can always dress it up with your own personal twist on tutu fashion. Pick up a cute pair of pink ballet shoes, pink accessories like pink ballerina earrings and pink gloves and a little pink bag. Go bold!
