Hello darlings! It's Monday, and you know what that means – it's time for another dazzling Pink Tutu Blog post, straight from the heart of New York City! ?✨
This week, I'm bursting with excitement. After a whirlwind of ballet performances at the Royal Albert Hall back in good ol' Derbyshire, I jetted over to New York City for the most wonderful Christmas and New Year's celebration. Honestly, the festive lights on Fifth Avenue were enough to send my inner child into a flurry of happy squeals, and the city just shimmered with a joyous energy.
But the real magic started on Boxing Day! Yes, dear readers, Boxing Day in New York City was the absolute BEST way to begin my holiday. It's a bit strange being so far away from home during Christmas, but the city's warm embrace certainly eased the distance.
A Ballerina's Boxing Day Delight
As the city awoke from its festive slumber, I put on my favourite pink tutu, the one with the sparkle and shimmer that catches the light just right, and took the Metro downtown to meet my dearest friend, Emily, a fellow tutu enthusiast and resident New York ballerina. We decided to kick off Boxing Day with a little bit of ballet, naturally.
Now, I can’t resist a little secret – you can't always catch me in full performance gear unless I’m dancing on stage. However, Emily and I both own these exquisite pink tulle skirts, the perfect compromise between my passion for ballet and a need for a little more practicality in my daily life!
We met for coffee at the adorable cafe just a skip and hop from Lincoln Center, the home of the New York City Ballet, the perfect place to gather our thoughts before embarking on a most delightful afternoon. As we chatted about everything from our favourite pas de bourrees to the newest shoe designs (a girl's gotta stay updated!), the warm aroma of cinnamon and vanilla from the cafe swirled around us. We were ready for our treat, the ballet! ?
New York City Ballet: A Visual Feast
I’ve never seen "The Nutcracker" in New York City before. And let me tell you, seeing this enchanting classic with its breathtaking scenery and vibrant costumes amidst the magical atmosphere of Lincoln Center was truly spectacular! I can’t even begin to describe the pure artistry of the dancers. Every step was fluid, every gesture was captivating, and I honestly felt as if I was transported to a whole new world.
Afterwards, we strolled around the Upper West Side, soaking up the energy of this buzzing neighbourhood, taking in the magnificent architecture, and, of course, window-shopping! I’m sure you can guess what I was drawn to: sparkling tiaras, sequinned tutus, and dazzling dresses in shades of pink that would make a flamingo blush. I simply can’t resist a little retail therapy! ?️
New York’s Glamorous Shopping Spree
Emily had mentioned a new pop-up store dedicated to dance wear that opened just this year on Bleecker Street. So we ventured down there for an afternoon of pure ballet fashion delight. The store was crammed with the most fabulous ballet shoes, from pointe shoes in a myriad of colours and fabrics to comfy dance flats with adorable, little pink ribbons.
Honestly, I was in shopping heaven. I had to get myself a pair of pointe shoes for my latest pink-tutu routine - they are the cutest light pink pair you have ever seen.
The store had an abundance of leotards in the most amazing shades, some with adorable floral motifs and others with shimmering sequins that caught the light. They also had some stunning tutus, some fluffy and full, and others sleek and elegant, the colours of which had to be seen to be believed. I simply couldn't resist taking a few of those for myself too! I might need another suitcase for this trip!
That evening, we met up with a group of dancers, all with our own individual dance styles and passions, to have dinner at this cosy Italian restaurant close to Times Square, where the lights reflected like stars against the night sky. The conversation flowed, fuelled by stories of our experiences, new choreography ideas, and just general girlish chatter, all punctuated with bursts of laughter that rang out as happily as the bells in the Square. It was just another beautiful memory made with amazing friends who share my passion for ballet.
A Ballet Street Performance: The Beauty of Movement
Now, you might think a New Yorker is always in a rush, but I was pleasantly surprised. While rushing around in the early morning to catch my train, I stumbled across a dance class taking place on the sidewalk, amidst the bustle of a busy Manhattan street. This was my first ballet class outside a dedicated studio. I can’t tell you how intrigued I was to see ballerinas executing their moves in such a public setting.
Despite the chaotic environment, there was a stillness, a sense of grace that permeated every movement. The dance teacher’s energy, coupled with the music, somehow managed to carve out a little world of elegance and movement right in the heart of the city.
An Evening of Dance Theatre: A Fusion of Arts
In the evening, we caught a mesmerizing performance of "Alice in Wonderland" by the Royal Ballet at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, just across the bridge from Manhattan. This incredible theatrical piece wasn’t just ballet - it combined ballet with video projection, music, and storytelling in a way I’d never witnessed before! It truly was an artistic fusion that brought Alice’s adventures to life in such a captivating manner that it felt like stepping into a real-life Wonderland.
We spent the rest of the night wandering through Brooklyn's trendy DUMBO neighbourhood. We even found a "Pink Tutu" shop – truly divine, my love for pink and tutus was certainly well-received! I am happy to share a new design, in collaboration with them, to be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
The Tutu Love Continues: A Global Sisterhood
One of the greatest things about dancing in a tutu is the incredible connection you make with fellow ballet enthusiasts from around the globe. I’m convinced there’s a certain unspoken language shared by anyone who ever slips into a tutu, and my experiences here in New York City have just reinforced that belief.
I have been to so many different dance studios and watched various styles of dancing while I was in NYC and every single one has given me a little more appreciation for the universality of ballet and what we can achieve when we come together, embracing a shared passion, which is precisely what I am aiming to achieve – sharing that love for ballet with the world.
As I embark on this exciting New Year filled with possibilities and dancing opportunities, my message remains clear: embrace the joy of dance and let the tutu be your wings to take you wherever your heart desires. So don't be shy – embrace the pink, slip into a tutu, and unleash the ballerina inside! ??
The Perfect Start to a New Year
This Christmas and New Year trip was all about celebrating a life dedicated to dance, embracing new experiences, and creating precious memories that I will treasure forever.
If you’re reading this and ever feel like your dreams are too big or that you can't make them happen, I urge you to find your inner tutu and let it inspire you. The power of dance is incredible – it can ignite passions, inspire creativity, and connect us in a way that very few things can. And who knows, maybe even help inspire others to don a pink tutu.
