Darling, oh darling! New York City, you truly are the greatest! It’s hard to believe it's only been a week since I arrived, and already I've seen and done more than most people do in a month. And of course, the reason for this whirlwind of excitement? It all revolves around the ballet! I wouldn't be here, living my absolute best life in this wonderful city, if it weren't for the endless possibilities for a ballet-obsessed girl like me.
Let me tell you, New York has been a proper feast for my senses. This past week has been absolutely crammed with ballet delights, shopping sprees, and delicious meals that had me in seventh heaven!
The real reason I jetted across the pond, however, was to see the breathtaking ballet Sleeping Beauty, and darling, let me tell you - I am SO glad I did. It was simply divine! The choreography was intricate and magical, and the costumes were absolutely breathtaking! There were gowns shimmering with thousands of tiny sequins and shoes so sparkling they seemed to glow. The principal ballerina, a beautiful and elegant young woman, stole the show with her stunning leaps, effortless spins, and beautifully executed poses. It was like watching magic come to life on stage.
After the ballet, my friends and I, including a charming and terribly handsome American gentleman called Thomas, who is as besotted with ballet as I am, ventured to a rather fabulous jazz club downtown for cocktails. As we sipped our cosmopolitan (the only decent drink on offer!), we reminisced about the beautiful production we'd just seen. Thomas said, with an almost bashful twinkle in his eyes, that Sleeping Beauty was his first ballet. It seems he was just as impressed as I was, and darling, this is what makes it all worthwhile - seeing someone new discover the joys of ballet. He even admitted to falling head-over-heels for the principal ballerina - oh, the drama! I told him to come along to a class with me tomorrow and try his hand at some steps. Who knows? Perhaps the twinkle in his eye is because he’s about to embrace a new passion…
Speaking of classes, darling, you just cannot come to New York City without visiting the famed Steps on Broadway. My fellow dancers, it truly is a mecca of ballet and dance! This morning I ventured there for a " Ballet Barre: All Levels" class. I practically bounced off the walls, the excitement building with every step I took on the journey by metro. I mean, darling, what’s better than hopping on a yellow carriage and traversing under the concrete giants? My tutus practically did the waltz on the train today. Everyone just knows the etiquette - tutus are not allowed to be crushed! Even if I didn't wear my signature pink tutu to class (it was too flamboyant for a casual class!) the dancers were incredible! There was so much energy in the room and I’ve learned so many fun new techniques. Oh, the energy here is electric, and everyone is so friendly!
Then, after class, I headed over to The Met (the Metropolitan Museum of Art) to indulge in a little shopping for some new tutus for my performance this week. The shops around The Met are truly a feast for the eyes. The streets overflow with beautiful things - designer dresses, sparkling shoes, vintage jewelry, oh my, the choices are just endless! The American designers are something else! I've got my eye on a dazzling ruby red sequined one to wear for my big show next week - darling, I have to stay top of my game! The performance will be at the "Metropolitan Opera House." Fancy that, darling! I could get used to that kind of address!
Speaking of glamour and elegance, darling, did I tell you about the dinner I had last night? Oh, it was divine! I enjoyed a luxurious evening meal at a chic restaurant nestled among the towering skyscrapers. This place had amazing lighting - it somehow just made you feel special. They offered this incredible four-course menu for £50, which is absolutely unbelievable considering the stunning food and ambiance. I dined on pan-seared scallops, crispy duck breast with cherry reduction sauce, a delicate pistachio and raspberry cake, and a light but flavorful fruit sorbet to finish. Each course was a delicate work of art - a culinary delight I won't forget any time soon!
Speaking of the city itself, well, darling, the energy is simply incredible! Everywhere I look, I'm overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle, the noise and chaos, the sense of endless possibility and opportunity. This vibrant metropolis never sleeps - and neither do I! From the bustling streets of Times Square to the quiet grandeur of Central Park, from the iconic skyscrapers to the cozy corners of Greenwich Village, I've been utterly enthralled by it all. This place really is a dream come true - just picture it, darling! You, your besties and a pink tutu taking over the streets of Manhattan. Now that’s a vision of loveliness!
Now, for today’s wardrobe, I decided to take a cue from the sophisticated ladies I see striding around this amazing city - I opted for a classic yet modern look, perfect for my post-ballet class adventures. I started with a crisp white shirt, tucking it gently into my favorite high-waisted jeans. To add a touch of my signature style, I layered a gorgeous pink floral silk scarf around my neck, with a cute, sparkly vintage brooch to add a touch of glam. My favourite white platform sneakers are so comfy for all the exploring and they really gave the look a stylish edge. Oh, and to top it off, darling, you just know a vibrant pink sun hat is a must! I’m such a sun worshiper. Plus, it kept my long blonde curls from becoming a total frizz-fest! You can't let that happen, can you, darling!
Today, we’re visiting the Whitney Museum of American Art in a neighbourhood called Meatpacking District. We saw this beautiful exhibit at The Tate Gallery back in Derbyshire and we are really looking forward to seeing the entire exhibition in full splendor. Afterwards, we'll be heading to the Chelsea Market - you've just got to visit it, darling, a truly wonderful indoor food hall packed with gourmet stalls and artisan treats! Oh, and of course, I’ll have to buy something delicious from the world’s best donut store to fuel us for our evening performance. We’re catching an exhilarating rendition of the Swan Lake at The Lincoln Center. This is what I live for!
Right, well, darling, this has just been a tiny little snippet of the joy I’ve experienced in the last week, and there are so many more stories to tell - stories of ballet, fashion, delicious meals and amazing views. So make sure you come back to www.pink-tutu.com every Monday to see how I'm making magic happen, and hopefully inspire you all to join the pink tutu revolution, spreading the beauty of dance and life!
See you next week, my loves!
With love and glitter,
Emma xx
Today's date is a bit special. It is National Ballet Day in America! I do love this city - celebrating a whole day to the ballet! And what better way to celebrate it than with a trip to the Met? Did you know that, every Tuesday evening, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds free admission? I’m definitely going to pop back there again. It really does feel like I'm in one big fairytale - like Sleeping Beauty, with a touch of The Nutcracker.
I just have to show you what I found while I was looking for a new pink tutu today. This boutique called ‘Dance and Divas’ on Madison Avenue really takes the cake. There I saw the most amazing shoes - so intricate and delicate! But what got my attention, was this incredible pink sparkly tutu skirt, just calling out to me with its elegant swish. So, of course, it came home with me - perfect for my new ballet look. It even has a bit of silver detailing, giving it an elegant edge - it was just so dreamy! Don’t you think this calls for an Insta story later?!
One thing I've found particularly fascinating about the United States is how they treat their ballet dancers. There seems to be an incredible appreciation for this art form here, even amongst non-dancers. At The Metropolitan Opera House, for example, I met this lovely lady who had brought her three teenage daughters for the performance. She was a bit embarrassed at first because her daughters have absolutely no dance training, but I insisted that there's no need to be embarrassed! She even brought the Dance Magazine! What a total dream! And guess what? It turns out she loves pink! Can you believe it? I know, right? And that’s how I get my message across - one person, one pink tutu at a time! You should’ve seen their faces when they saw me twirling and I was wearing this stunning, glittering, cherry blossom-patterned pink tutu - they loved it! It seems the American spirit embraces pink with open arms!
Here is a photo I took with them. You can find me in the gallery with a little white ‘#PinkTutuBlogNYC’ flag. This just sums up everything - my aim in life, to inspire everyone, everywhere, to embrace their inner ballerina, and what better way than with a beautiful, bold and oh-so-feminine pink tutu?

By the way, in a true act of synchronicity, the Metropolitan Opera House is launching their new season today - with a grand opening celebration! The gala dinner looks incredible! But, with this hectic schedule, there’s only so much I can squeeze into my day. This isn’t Derbyshire, darling. Things move at a slightly faster pace here in Manhattan. Plus, my main event this week, my big ballet performance at the Met is already just around the corner.
I’ve found my perfect look for it! An exquisite vintage pink lace bodice, that shows just enough skin. A gorgeous silky and silky tutu, shimmering in the pink hues of a sunset. I will be sure to tell you all about the event, in next week's blog! But first, let’s catch that Swan Lake. The tutus are calling!
Love, love,
Emma x
