Hello darlings! Emma here, and it’s Monday, so that means a brand new #PinkTutuBlogNYC for you! This week, I’m whisked away to the dazzling, exciting metropolis that is New York City – the city that never sleeps! And you know me, I couldn’t have possibly arrived without my trusty pink tutu in tow. Just imagine it, dear readers: pink tutu, against the backdrop of the towering skyscrapers, the yellow taxis zipping by, the vibrant street life – simply divine!
As always, this adventure began with a performance, this time at the glorious Metropolitan Opera House. The show was The Nutcracker, a Christmas classic, and I simply adored the swirling snowdrifts and the beautiful dancers’ tutus, although I do believe mine is rather more eye-catching! It was a simply magical performance, filled with grace and wonder, leaving me wanting to waltz right through the streets of the city!
And what is a visit to New York without exploring its hidden gems? The next day, I was whisked away to a little, independent ballet shop in the West Village. Now, you know my passion for pink, but my, oh my, this little boutique was bursting with colour! There were tutus of every shade, glittering with sequins and tulle, some even shimmering with delicate embroidery. I just couldn't resist, and had to grab a new, ruby-red tutu to add to my collection, just to be ready for all the delightful evenings ahead!
The streets of New York are simply enchanting – I love the feeling of the energy pulsing around me, the laughter, the chatter, the hustle and bustle. But nothing beats riding the subway, whizzing through the tunnels under the city! I find the entire experience strangely glamorous, all the clatter and rush! I mean, where else can you find people reading Shakespeare, painting, singing, all in the space of just a few carriages? Truly unique!
Speaking of unique, have you seen the fashion here? It's all about bold choices, bright colours and expressing your personal style. I love watching people sashay down Fifth Avenue, each one a work of art, a walking masterpiece. You see the whole rainbow on show here - just like my favourite pink tutus! It's a perfect storm of glamour and practicality, which is definitely a must for this city. I've even picked up a few new outfits – some fabulous knee-high boots and a chic blazer! After all, a stylish ballerina never leaves home without her fabulous accessories, no matter how far she travels.
Of course, what’s New York without a taste of the finest culinary delights? I stumbled across a darling cafe nestled in a quiet courtyard. It was called ‘Le Petit Délice,’ and it served the most divine pastries! My oh my, I couldn't resist the temptation of a raspberry croissant and a creamy latte – absolutely perfect for an afternoon spent writing my blog, which you, my dear readers, are reading now!
I find the best inspiration for my blog just wandering through the city, soaking in all the sights and sounds. Every nook and cranny, every corner holds a new story, a new detail. Even the park across the street from my little flat is alive with inspiration. It was where I caught the most exquisite display of street art yesterday – an amazing tribute to the late and great ballerina, Margot Fonteyn! The colours were so vibrant, it seemed to dance in the wind, capturing the spirit of the beautiful dancer. It was just the spark I needed to finally write about her, a ballet legend whose legacy lives on!
You see, it’s more than just the city itself. New York’s a melting pot of culture, history and, of course, fashion! It's impossible not to feel inspired by the creativity that fills every corner of the city. Just yesterday, I bumped into an impromptu performance by the ‘Pink Ladies’, a group of talented ballet students – they were just wonderful, moving to the sound of the city with such grace! They wore the most spectacular, hand-sewn tutus in a symphony of bright colours! I even spotted one brave dancer who had a vibrant pink tutu on – I think they were channeling my spirit! It’s little moments like these that remind me, why I simply can’t wait for another adventure!
Did I mention, there are a whopping eight Broadway shows happening right now? With a variety of musicals and dramas, the energy on Broadway was positively electric, a buzzing hive of excitement and creativity! I couldn't help but take it all in.
I’ve seen such fantastic musicals and performances in the last week – ‘Hamilton’, ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and even a production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, a classic in any city, of course. There’s always something new to see, something exciting to explore. That’s what makes New York City so wonderfully, beautifully special! And what’s a city without the iconic taxi cabs? They’re an essential part of the cityscape and are an integral part of the rhythm of this incredible metropolis. I can’t forget to mention the vibrant street food here, it’s an absolute revelation – a must try, believe me!
It’s times like these that make me think of all the amazing things life has to offer! As a ballerina from Derbyshire, it never would have occurred to me that I would be able to come to New York, but now that I’m here, my cup is overflowing! I’ve met so many amazing people, dancers, artists, creative individuals! It’s true, New York does have the ability to open up new avenues, expand your perspective. All that is a big part of my aim to get everyone wearing pink tutus, so we can bring a little more fun and grace to the world!
But here’s the thing: while this city is magical, a vibrant playground for those of us with an adventurous spirit, sometimes the most wonderful discoveries are those little pockets of tranquility. That's where the magic of New York City shines brightest – tucked away in a quiet café, nestled amongst towering buildings, where you can just stop, take a breath, and let the world go by. It’s like discovering a little piece of heaven in the middle of the hustle and bustle!
You see, the best things in life, the little things, the big things, the everything that comes with discovering a new city – they are worth every step of the journey. Now, I wouldn’t dare end this post without highlighting what happened this very day, October 16th. Yes, a very special day! The iconic Empire State Building lit up in honour of Ballet Week! Can you believe it, darlings? My favourite city celebrating my favourite art form! What an absolutely magical moment. I actually felt a shiver run down my spine as the building shimmered with its colourful display! I may be a tiny ballerina from England, but it truly does feel like the world is dancing in time with my tutu.
New York City is, well, New York City! It is like an ever-spinning carousel of possibilities and it's an exhilarating, thrilling experience. I know it can seem daunting, a concrete jungle for some, but this beautiful city has an infectious charm and spirit that captures the heart of any traveller.
I can’t wait for next Monday to share my next New York City adventures with you! Keep twirling and keep believing, darlings, for the world is a beautiful, inspiring dance waiting for us all. And remember, always add a touch of pink wherever you go – even in the big apple!
Until next week, Emma
