Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Edition #1755 - Dancing Through the Big Apple ?

Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, back from another whirlwind weekend in the city that never sleeps, New York City! ?✨ And trust me, I certainly kept up with the energy levels here – I'm pretty sure I slept for about five hours all weekend, fuelled by a healthy dose of excitement and caffeine!

This week's post is extra special, because it marks the beginning of my annual New York trip! Every year, I just have to make it back to the city, a haven of art, culture and shopping galore. The hustle and bustle, the incredible architecture, and the sheer creativity of the city, it just gets my blood pumping. And this year, well, this year, I've truly upped the ante, making sure every moment was steeped in pink tutu bliss.

Now, let’s dive into the adventures, shall we?

A Whirlwind of Performances ?

My weekend kicked off with a visit to the famed Lincoln Center. This cultural hub was a treasure trove of performances. On Friday, I took a seat at the iconic David H. Koch Theater for the New York City Ballet's Spring Gala, and oh darling, it was simply stunning. Every step was pure elegance, and the artistry, so breathtaking! Seeing the grace and talent of these dancers was just so inspiring. Afterwards, I bumped into a dear friend who works as a costume designer and got to have a peek behind the curtain (or should I say, backstage!). Her world is filled with beautiful fabrics, dazzling sequins, and intricate details. I nearly swooned!

I just can’t leave NYC without popping over to Broadway, now can I? So on Saturday, I made my way to the majestic Minskoff Theatre to witness the enchantment of The Lion King. ? I truly felt like a little girl again, enthralled by the vibrant colors, the amazing costumes (hello, majestic feathered headpieces!), and the breathtaking puppetry. It’s a show that truly lives up to the hype, my darlings! It just reinforced that feeling of magic, the joy of storytelling through movement and music – that’s what theatre is all about.

Tutus and The Met ?

On Saturday afternoon, I found myself surrounded by masterpieces in a world of art – the Metropolitan Museum of Art! My pink tutu, of course, took centre stage as I explored this dazzling collection of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from across the globe. I’ll be honest, I almost missed out on visiting the Met! The day had been hectic, and it felt like the to-do list just kept growing! ? But I pushed through my tired legs, because as any fashion-loving ballerina knows, a trip to the Met is non-negotiable! I just love the intricate detail and beauty in their exhibitions. And this trip was extra special. Their Costumes of Royal India exhibition just took my breath away! It brought a little sparkle into the day with its display of jeweled clothes and opulent embroidered tunics. It just proves that a passion for the finer things in life transcends cultural boundaries, darling.

A Pink Tutu Trail through NYC ✨

Oh, New York! A playground for a pink tutu aficionado! ? This weekend, my tulle adventures led me all over the city. I began at The Strand Book Store on Broadway, a wonderland of paperbacks and antique treasures. This charming book shop is the ultimate destination for bibliophiles – think towering shelves filled with countless volumes from every genre imaginable. And you know me, I had to find the perfect book to go with my perfect tutu. This time, it was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – such a dreamy story to go with the enchantment of New York City!

Then it was time for some retail therapy! The Lower East Side had me in my element. Here, in a treasure trove of unique boutiques and independent shops, I discovered a whimsical boutique filled with the most gorgeous pink clothes! The owner was such a delight, and her shop held some amazing pieces - tulle skirts in every shade of pink, sequins glittering in the afternoon light, and a selection of feather boas that made me practically sing. Oh darling, the whole experience just felt so fitting – I swear my pink tutu twirled all on its own with joy!

I must tell you, shopping at the Upper East Side boutiques felt quite different. In some shops, I received some… let's just say "less-than-enthusiastic" stares from some of the shoppers when I entered in my tutu. I know, it's a little daring, but hey, a girl’s gotta spread her wings – and twirls – wherever she goes!

I wouldn't be a true NYC explorer without a dip into the local culture. A wander down Greenwich Village’s charming streets felt like stepping back in time, and taking a stroll through Washington Square Park gave me a sense of community that warmed my heart. I found myself sketching in the park with the art students (using my pink-hued pencils, of course! ? ).

And Then There’s the Subway! ?

Who would've thought the subway system, the underground network that fuels the city’s heartbeat, would become a pink tutu adventure? Every morning and evening, I navigated the subway, my tulle flowing, catching the curious glances and admiring stares of fellow travellers. I can't tell you how many smiles I received while in my tutu! A girl needs to show some flair in the hustle and bustle of New York.

It wasn't just a transportation hub, but a mini catwalk – showcasing the vibrancy and individuality that New York City thrives on. Even on the most packed carriage, my tutu stood out, a burst of color and confidence, spreading a touch of joy to those around me. Sometimes I felt a little bit like a princess navigating her kingdom!

It's All About the Memories…

And here I am, back in my cozy Derbyshire home, wrapped in a blanket, sipping on tea, reliving each moment of my pink tutu journey. I have a heart full of memories, a suitcase filled with pink treasures, and a newfound love for this incredible city. New York, with its constant flow and endless possibilities, inspires me in a way no other city can. And now, as I prepare for a week of ballet rehearsals, I'll carry this NYC magic in my heart – ready to twirl back into life with a newfound zeal! ?✨

Until next week, darling, and don’t forget: It’s never too late to unleash your inner ballerina and embrace the wonder of a pink tutu!

With Love,

Emma x
