Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #1791 - Tutuing Through the Big Apple!

Helloooo my darling dears! It’s Monday, the start of a brand new week, and I'm bursting with excitement to tell you all about my simply sensational adventures in New York City. Remember, as a rule, my blog posts go live each Monday at 12pm NYC time on www.pink-tutu.com. Do subscribe so you don't miss a single bit of Tutu-liciousness.

It's a truly remarkable week in New York City and I am utterly thrilled to be right in the middle of it! From the bustling Broadway shows to the vibrant street performances, the atmosphere here is just electric. You wouldn’t believe how many amazing tutus I’ve spotted this week – I feel like a veritable princess in my own right! And this week? Let’s just say, it’s been a proper, old-fashioned fairy tale.

From Derbyshire to NYC

So, I travelled all the way from Derbyshire, you see, and what a journey it was! Let's face it, we Brits know how to pack a proper amount of goodies for a long journey. My big pink suitcase is a sight to behold - packed with enough frocks and tutus to last a month. You might ask, what are the essentials? Well, darlings, it’s simple: sparkle. As many sequins and glitter as you can get your little mitts on.

But this time, I swapped the car for the tube – well, actually it's the subway as they say here! Oh my word! I know, you'll be laughing when you hear I'm in the biggest city in the US and I took the underground – how frightfully British is that? But my dears, I adore it! There's something charmingly vintage and mysterious about zipping through the dark, underground tunnels of the city. It's so wonderfully efficient and a lovely escape from the crowds on the street. Don’t be fooled, I was not in that subway alone - Oh no, my fabulous, shimmery tutu, and my trusty, adorable backpack went with me, of course. The tutu looked simply marvellous in the harsh light of the platform – a perfect shot for the Insta.

Fun Fact! Did you know that the NYC subway system is over 100 years old? Just imagine what adventures and stories those tunnels must hold!

A Magical Monday

And then we reach my absolute favourite day - Monday! I love Monday. Because in New York, there’s nothing better than a good, old-fashioned Monday matinee. My day started off, in my usual routine of a full-on makeup and outfit prep session. Oh, this one was rather special! Imagine – a glorious, full-skirted pink tulle tutu, a gorgeous vintage, powder-blue cardigan with pearly buttons and, naturally, the most amazing pair of ruby red stilettoes, I could find. My makeup? Oh, my darling, we’re talking the works: bright blusher, glittery pink eyeshadow and, to really tie it all together, a touch of coral lipstick. After all, the matinee was for West Side Story and, wouldn’t you know it? It turned out to be the absolute perfect outfit!

We (me and my amazing pink tutu, of course) arrived early enough for the delightful pre-show activities. We snapped pictures at the iconic, Broadway marquees (naturally!) and, you know I wouldn't be me without a little Tutu-tastic dance outside the theatre doors! Everyone laughed, of course, but in the most joyous, delighted way! And wouldn't you know it, there were a bunch of ladies and gents who just couldn't resist popping on a few spins and leaps with me! Just a lovely, little taste of ballet on Broadway!

Fun Fact! West Side Story premiered in 1957, the same year that Elvis Presley first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. You really wouldn't believe it, how quickly the decades fly by! And guess what? Both West Side Story and Elvis have been tremendous inspirations in my life! If you ever hear me humming, it’s very likely that one of those two gems will pop into my head! You know me and my musicals - I can't resist a good love story!

But the performance? Let's just say, my heart melted. It's pure magic on stage. Every single detail of that show just resonated, I loved it, and of course, my pink tutu danced the entire way. The beautiful, powerful, and sometimes sad stories of Romeo and Juliet set in 1950s New York! You’ve never seen so many twirling tutus! But let’s face it, darling, a girl never gets enough of a great musical.

The post-matinee experience was pure joy, of course. We wandered over to a very quaint little tea room right across from the theatre, which was bursting with character, delicious tea and scones – you couldn’t ask for a lovelier experience! And while sipping tea with dainty finger sandwiches and scones, I just had to capture the moment for my Instagram - those pictures are bound to give you serious “tea time” envy, my dears. You must always take advantage of tea time when you get the chance! It’s such a vital part of the New York experience!

A Tutus and Tea Kinda Day

After all the delights of Broadway, we popped back uptown, of course with a couple of tutu-tastic, snaps for Instagram on the way. What could be more delightful than my big, pink, tutu swaying against the cityscape? You just can’t resist such a photo op!

The afternoon called for a lovely stroll through Central Park. And wouldn't you know it, it was so enchanting I just had to give myself a little picnic, as a way to unwind and give those happy memories some space to settle. You know the kind, those big, bold memories that leave you giggling as they unfurl themselves through your mind, as you sip tea in a tranquil, gorgeous setting. After all, Central Park is the heart and soul of this city and a must-do for anyone, ballerina or not, who is fortunate enough to come to NYC! It is totally my kind of space - surrounded by gorgeous green trees, flowers, and birds! What better spot to relax and reflect on the beauty of it all?

And guess what? As soon as the sun began to set, it was time for me to put my tutu in for the night! But even in the evening, this amazing city just continues to enchant. The brightly lit skyscrapers make me want to spin, even if I'm not in my pink tutu. The vibe was absolutely electric, with the clanging of street performers, the whizz of taxis, the cheerful cries of the street vendors. You have to just get caught up in it all!

Later on in the evening, we dined on some incredible pizza. There are few things I love more than delicious New York pizza. Pizza in the city – my dear, oh my! It's an art form here - that golden crust, the extra cheese, it's an adventure for the taste buds. Oh! My heart nearly burst when I tried that little, corner pizza place that’s run by a lovely old couple, right off Times Square! There was just a tiny, old table and just three stools in the place but, darling, the pizza was out of this world! The man who served us actually made us all the pizzas in an old fashioned, stone pizza oven.

Fun fact! The first pizza was actually eaten in Naples back in 1889! It seems pizza is as old as my grandmother, so maybe my next birthday, I'll invite her to a pizza party! And this year? Well, if my mum agrees, I think we might have our very own tutu-tastic birthday pizza party, here in NYC!

I did make sure I gave myself a night in a comfy chair – oh how my poor little feet were thanking me after that exciting, day. I slipped into some splendid, pink pyjamas (because you have to be comfortable and look good, darling!) I poured myself a hot cup of cocoa, switched on some tunes and just let all the memories of the day drift through my head as I relaxed in front of a very, good old fashioned American movie.

A Truly Fabulous Tuesday!

So after all of that fun, it was time to move on! My Tuesday, well it involved more exploration – as all the most delightful adventures often do! The shops here, oh darling, I must confess that I had a right, proper spree! There was this gorgeous vintage boutique in Soho that I had simply got to find. And trust me, the things I picked up oh my, darling, they were the most extraordinary things! A perfect little beret for a trip to Central Park? You got it! A soft, silky, pink satin dress perfect for an evening opera or a special night out with the girls? You betcha!

I know you're wondering, well where exactly did Emma get all of this cash for such a wonderful shopping spree, and well, let’s just say, that my lovely dance performance on Sunday made a handsome profit! Yes, you see, I've discovered that you can have a real and fulfilling job and make an amazing career doing something you adore. It is possible. It’s the magic of tutus. My darling, there really is magic out there in this wonderful world! So if you love ballet as much as I do, maybe give a performance for yourself or to raise funds for a good cause or to add a little twirl and a little fun to someone's day! It’s a joy, I can tell you that!

We popped by this little cafe I had been eyeing for ages for a proper cuppa and a delicious chocolate and hazelnut croissant! There was a delicious scent coming from the place when I passed by a couple of days back and my dears, let’s just say my curiosity got the best of me.

We wandered up towards this amazing shop with the most spectacular, pink vintage dresses – so many! It was a complete heaven of sequins, lace, and frills. We couldn’t resist the beautiful, silk fabrics and vintage handbags. My dear, those dresses would make any princess look like royalty and let me tell you, there was no time for “Just looking.” I had to bring home a little something special for the occasion. The shop owner is simply divine. We chatted and gossiped as I chose some fabulously delightful bits to add to my pink collection, you see, it wouldn’t be a trip to New York without shopping, would it? Just think of all the tutu-rific selfies! It's a complete and utter joy to be able to share this all with you my dear dears.

Fun fact! The very first shop opened in 1919, after the first world war and you know, here in New York it’s simply a thing - to browse, and buy, to have fun. It's absolutely an adventure!

The late afternoon light of New York City? My dears, it’s truly a sight to behold – especially through the rose-tinted lens of a pink tutu! I found this little, gorgeous, quiet, tucked-away spot in Little Italy to sit and take it all in - to think and to plan. There was a tiny cafe crammed with the sweetest little tables, nestled under the awnings of an amazing building. You couldn’t possibly miss this place. It was practically oozing with character and Italian charm. I’d say a classic cafe scene just had to be captured on camera! It's so much more special than all those big chain cafes. You know me and my tiny, cute, family owned and run spots!

The late evening found me back on the subway - whirling my way across the city back towards my lovely little, cozy apartment. I even caught a little street performance on the way back, full of dancing, music, and bright colors. As you know, my Tutu-tastic side just came out and it felt so lovely to get up and spin around in the middle of the city and show these performers, a tutu - it was so joyous. And everybody joined in. It was a marvelous, impromptu street performance that nobody would have ever planned and the best part, you can only really do it in New York! The pure joy just filled the heart! It really made the whole trip worthwhile, as they say.

As the day ends here, you have to tell me. Where do you think I'll be tutuing through tomorrow, darlings...? Maybe Central Park, maybe the Bronx Zoo, maybe an afternoon at the Metropolitan Opera

Stay tuned and get your tutu ready – the next week of Pink Tutu NYC adventures is bound to be even more spectacular!
