Prague, Oh Prague! Post #60 - Pink Tutus & a City of Dreams

Wednesday, 19th June, 1996

Bonjour, darlings! I'm writing to you today from the most beautiful city, a city overflowing with cobblestone streets, whimsical towers, and the sound of laughter echoing through the plazas. Yes, my loves, I'm in Prague, the heart of the Czech Republic, and my little pink tutu is positively thrilled to be here.

This week's blog post is all about my first day in this fairytale city. I'm still in awe of the majestic Prague Castle, with its regal towers reaching towards the heavens and the charming golden roof shimmering like a thousand twinkling stars. I feel like I've stepped into a picture book, a romantic waltz swirling around me in the gentle breeze.

But let's rewind a little...

My journey began, as it always does, in my darling Derbyshire home. Packing was an adventure in itself, finding just the right pink tulle for Prague's streets and a delightful little hat with a feather (naturally) for a touch of Parisian flair. The train ride across the continent was pure magic - watching the countryside whizz past the window, the colours and landscapes constantly changing, was truly enchanting.

Then, finally, Prague. I disembarked the train feeling like I'd arrived in a dream, the air humming with history and charm. A cab whisked me through the narrow, cobbled streets, past Baroque buildings with intricate facades and fairytale squares bustling with life. My hotel, with its arched windows and flower-laden balcony, looked straight out of a Rococo painting.

My first stop, of course, was the city centre. I found a beautiful boutique crammed full of vintage dresses and velvet handbags, just the sort of place I'd adore finding on a Parisian side street. My latest purchase, a silk scarf adorned with exquisite embroidered roses, is already vying for the title of my favourite accessory!

After my shopping spree, I decided to indulge in a traditional Czech lunch. The hearty goulash, served with dumplings as soft as clouds, was simply divine, the flavours filling my mouth with an explosion of sweet and savoury delights. And for dessert, a creamy and airy smetanova omaฤka (sour cream sauce). My inner sugar bunny is very happy!

But now, it's time to delve into the main event - ballet! Tonight I'm heading to the famed National Theatre, a glorious neo-Renaissance structure with ornate sculptures and a grand entrance worthy of a princess (or, dare I say, a pink tutu-clad ballerina). The performance promises to be magical - a rendition of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. I can already picture the elegance, the grace, and the emotional depth of this classic masterpiece, all intertwined with the romantic magic of Prague itself.

This week I've also planned a visit to the Czech National Museum, to dive into the rich tapestry of ballet history and see if I can find a trace of my own favourite, the tutu. Oh, darling, it's a joy to explore the fascinating evolution of dance costumes and discover the fascinating origins of this essential garment.

Oh, and there's also the Czech Ballet Company. I hear their rehearsals are intense, but their performances are electric - I can't wait to witness the magic of their dance firsthand! I imagine there might be some gorgeous pink tutus amongst their collection - after all, Prague has such a vibrant and artistic soul!

Speaking of pink, I spotted the cutest little shop near my hotel selling the most charming little porcelain pink teacups. It's simply too delightful to resist, don't you think?

But don't worry, darlings, this is just the beginning of my Prague adventure! Stay tuned for my next blog post - it will be bursting with details about the Swan Lake performance and more of my explorations through this enchanting city! I have a feeling there will be many more pink tulle moments to come.

Stay stylish and always dance your heart out, Emma xx
