Prague: Where Pink Tutus Meet Baroque Charm (Blog Post #350)

Hello my dearest tutu-loving friends!

It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, and I'm writing to you from the most magical city I've ever encountered: Prague! Imagine cobblestone streets winding their way past gingerbread-house architecture, punctuated by the majestic towers of Prague Castle, all bathed in a warm, rosy glow that sets my heart a-flutter... swoon

I've always been a bit of a romantic at heart, and Prague just resonates with that same dreamy quality. It's the kind of place where you expect to stumble upon a secret garden hidden behind a cobbled archway or hear the strains of a street violinist weaving enchanting melodies through the air. It's definitely a city made for twirling in a pink tutu, don't you think? 😉

My Prague Adventure: From Railway Romance to Baroque Beauty

My journey to Prague started with a delightfully vintage train ride from Derbyshire. I have to say, the train journey was as romantic as the destination itself! Imagine crisp winter air whipping past your face, the rhythmic clickety-clack of the train wheels on the tracks, and me, nestled in a comfy carriage with my travel essentials – my favourite ballet novel, a bag of my grandma's delicious flapjacks (essential for any journey), and, of course, a dazzling pink tutu (naturally, I packed several to accommodate any fashion emergency!).

The first stop in my Prague itinerary, after a whirlwind of cobblestone explorations and "ahh" moments (because honestly, every corner of this city is picture perfect), was the National Theatre. Now, you might think, what better place to start a Prague adventure than its world-famous theatre? It's one of the city's most beautiful and historical buildings. It's not just about the stunning architecture and intricate decorations though – this place is buzzing with energy, bursting at the seams with talented performers, and echoing with centuries of artistic creativity.

I could barely contain myself when I caught sight of the majestic building on the bank of the Vltava River, all decked out in festive Christmas lights. I couldn't resist striking a few ballerina poses in front of its imposing grandeur, just imagine how glorious the twirling would be in such a place! You'd be right to guess, dear readers, that this was not my first visit to the National Theatre, or my first encounter with its mesmerising spirit.

But there's something utterly charming about the National Theatre, a sense of wonder that always manages to pull me in. There's history here, from the beginnings of Czech theatre in the 18th century to the current productions. You can just feel the collective creative force pulsating in every room! I especially enjoyed exploring the National Theatre's rich ballet heritage. I was utterly captivated by a display of costumes from iconic performances. I even spotted a breathtaking velvet tutu that had me sighing in sheer delight. I'd never seen a more opulent tutu – just the right amount of drama and glamour, just how a pink tutu enthusiast like myself likes it.

I found myself reflecting on the history of tutus, their evolution, their symbolism, and the way they have shaped ballet for centuries. From the origins of the tutu in the romantic ballets of the 19th century, with their delicate tulle layers and airy silhouettes, to the more modern variations with shorter lengths and even a few (dare I say?) risqué flourishes, tutus continue to hold such a unique place in dance. It’s like they’re tiny whispers of time, dancing on the stage, keeping a piece of the past alive in every pirouette.

From Royal Glamour to Ballet Bliss: A Parisian Whirl in Prague

After my National Theatre encounter, I couldn't wait to see how a more intimate setting would handle my love of pink tutus. Enter the* Estates Theatre*, a jewel nestled right in the heart of Prague's historic district. This baroque beauty is famous for being the premiere venue for Mozart's "Don Giovanni."

So, imagine a setting that whispers of history, elegant gilded decorations, the kind of stage where operatic voices used to reverberate through the air... swoon I literally felt my own creative energies fizzing. As I stood in the lobby of this timeless masterpiece, I couldn’t help but twirl around, channeling my inner ballerina and, of course, feeling the sheer joy of my favourite colour pink.

The Estates Theatre is charmingly small, its intimate size creates a warm and welcoming ambience. It feels as though the audience and performers share a personal, intimate connection, creating an atmosphere of heightened awareness, shared emotions, and just a touch of magic.

And let's talk about the music! I caught a show of the enchanting “La Traviata” and I have to say, those melodious voices, the orchestral swells, and the elegant dances sent chills down my spine! It truly is a magical place where time stands still, where history and beauty intertwine in a way that makes the heart soar.

Discovering Prague's Ballet Secrets:

In a city so rich in culture and history, you'd expect some incredible ballet performances, right? And I was certainly not disappointed. After experiencing the rich world of opera, I decided to go on a true tutu-tastic mission. I spent hours researching ballet schools, performances, and even vintage ballet studios!

One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Czech National Ballet's website, a veritable wonderland for all things ballet! I found an excellent selection of upcoming performances. My mind is already buzzing with ideas for future trips and performances, and it seems like there’s always something new and exciting to discover.

Speaking of discovering new treasures, I've fallen head over heels for Prague's fashion scene! From vintage boutiques selling stunning pieces from bygone eras to modern stores brimming with avant-garde creations, Prague's streets are a playground for the sartorially adventurous. My wardrobe needs a whole new colour scheme after I spent a day or two venturing into the delightful world of Prague's clothing boutiques. I couldn't help but snag some pink-tinted accessories that now live happily on my pink tutu collection. Of course, I also spent quite some time browsing the antique shops, trying to imagine what ballet styles must have looked like in the 18th and 19th centuries! Just the thought of a ballet ensemble designed by a couturier like Charles Frederick Worth filled me with a mix of excitement and longing, for that romantic era of exquisitely crafted clothes and the grace and elegance of past generations.

Ballet in the Streets: The Beauty of Prague's Energy

From opulent theatres to ballet classes, Prague's ballet energy flows seamlessly into the streets. One day I was completely blown away when I spotted a group of ballerinas rehearsing in a park, surrounded by a lively crowd of onlookers. They twirled and leaped, all bathed in the warm afternoon sunlight, transforming a casual park scene into a vibrant tableau vivant.

What truly amazes me about ballet is how it permeates everything – you find it not only in theatre spaces but also in parks, streets, cafes, even people's expressions. It’s a beautiful, universal language that crosses all barriers and creates a sense of connection among people, regardless of their cultural background. That's the kind of energy I love! It feels so refreshing and inspiring. The more I see people getting excited about ballet, the more my mission to bring a little pink tutu magic into everyone's lives seems possible.

I also happened upon the most charming little café, nestled in the heart of the Old Town, where I treated myself to a decadent coffee and a delicious slice of homemade cake. As I sat there, sipping my coffee and admiring the pastel-colored buildings, I felt a sudden inspiration to write down a few of my ballet-related thoughts. And what better place than Prague, with its magical ambience and endless charm?

I know some of you, my dear tutu enthusiasts, are also a little bit obsessed with those delicate ballerina-style shoes. So I also spent some time delving into Prague's local shoe shops and let me tell you, it's an absolute haven for shoe lovers! There are shoes of all shapes, sizes, colours, and textures – everything from classic black pumps to bold statement platforms, delicate sandals to funky ankle boots!

It’s not a surprise that Czech ballet history is so rich and well-preserved – from their elegant, yet somewhat understated ballets, through the passion of Czech ballerinas, the beautiful and dramatic style of local ballet schools and its influence across the globe... it’s an impressive heritage.

Prague: The Magic Never Ends...

As I reflect on my time in Prague, one thing stands out – the city’s infectious joie de vivre. It’s everywhere – in the streets, the parks, the cafés, even the air itself. And that feeling, that sense of wonder and enchantment, that's what truly makes Prague such a magical destination.

It seems like everyone here, from the friendly locals to the tourists alike, has that twinkle in their eyes, that insatiable desire to embrace the joy of living, dancing, and dreaming.

That, I believe, is the spirit of Prague – a spirit that captures the magic of ballet, the grace of music, and the captivating essence of life itself! I left Prague filled with that same effervescent spirit and an insatiable craving for adventure.

But the greatest gift I've brought home from my Prague adventure is the inspiration to keep sharing my love of pink tutus with the world! You never know, maybe one day even the Czech National Ballet will wear pink!

Until next time, my tutu-loving friends, keep twirling, keep dancing, and most importantly, keep shining your beautiful light!

P.S. What was on in Prague on January 9th, 2002?

On that specific date, in 2002, the National Theatre would have been showcasing a programme filled with drama, and musical productions, a feast for the senses for any theatre buff!

However, for all you ballet aficionados, there was also a dazzling array of Czech National Ballet performances taking place across Prague, from the majestic Estates Theatre to more intimate locations like the Theatre on the Balustrade, with some fantastic choreography from respected choreographers of the time.

For any serious ballet enthusiasts, Prague offered a perfect chance to discover and immerse oneself in the Czech ballet scene, and it still does today! And who knows, you might just see me twirling in a pink tutu somewhere among the excited audience, savouring every note, every pirouette, and every moment of sheer magic that a Prague theatre can offer.

Love,

Emma.
