Pink Tutu Prague: Post 965 - A whirl of pink and a dash of history 🩰
Hello my lovelies! It's Wednesday, and you know what that means? It's Pink Tutu Prague time!
This week, Prague has stolen my heart. It’s so wonderfully cobbled and romantic. The historic buildings look like they’ve been plucked from a fairytale, and the charming cafes tempt you with warm, spiced coffee and tempting pastries. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of autumn leaves and the promise of Christmas markets (cue the festive feels!) It's the kind of place you can truly lose yourself in, just wandering from one enchanting square to another.
And me? Well, I’m waltzing through the city in a stunning pink tulle number I picked up in Vienna (I love that city for its fabulous fashion scene! If you ever visit, be sure to head to Mariahilfer Straße, a shoppers' paradise!)
Speaking of waltzing…
A pink-tutued soirée at the Prague National Theatre
Tonight, I’m seeing the Sleeping Beauty ballet at the National Theatre. Yes, I’m wearing my trusty pink tutu. (Naturally! What else would a pink tutu wearing ballerina wear?) I’m positively bubbling with excitement! The National Theatre, housed in a magnificent neo-Renaissance building, boasts one of Europe’s largest and most elaborate stages. I'm certain that the performance will be enchanting, with exquisite costumes, magical choreography, and stunning set designs. I already feel like a princess just by being here!
And before I gush further, let's take a little detour into the tutu history that got me here, shall we?
The fascinating history of the tutu: A twirl through time
The tutu is a costume steeped in history and tradition. Did you know it’s more than 200 years old?!
The origins of the tutu:
It all started in the early 19th century. Romanticism was sweeping through Europe, and with it came a yearning for beauty and emotion in ballet. Choreographers wanted ballerinas to look more ethereal and airy, and thus, the tutu was born.
It wasn't quite the short, whimsical tutu we know and love today, mind you! It began as a long, loose, almost ankle-length skirt. Think of a soft, flowy cloud with an extra frill here and there.
The evolution of the tutu:
It took several decades for the tutu to become the iconic, shorter, and more glamorous design that we all know today.
The big breakthrough was in the mid-19th century when French ballet maestro Marius Petipa came on the scene. He understood how the tutu could amplify a dancer’s movements, highlighting the elegance and fluidity of their every step. He encouraged designers to shorten the skirt, revealing the legs and making them look even more graceful and light.
A celebration of the tutu:
There’s a certain magic to the tutu. It's not just about its exquisite form and graceful flow. It’s about expressing a sense of wonder and whimsy, embodying a spirit of femininity and grace, and a desire to bring joy through dance.
Back to Prague, and back to the Sleeping Beauty
So, back to Prague, where the spirit of romance and fairy tales hangs thick in the air. As the clock strikes 7, I'm off to the theatre.
You’d better believe I’ll be taking loads of pictures. I might even post a little Instagram story. If you’re following me on Instagram @PinkTutuEmma you’ll see it pop up, along with more behind-the-scenes glimpses of Prague.
The thrill of the travel
Prague isn’t just the final destination. The journey was also full of magic! I traveled from Derbyshire, my lovely little home county, by train. I'm a bit of a train buff! There’s something so captivating about the journey. Looking out of the window as the countryside rushes past, seeing rolling hills, ancient castles, charming towns, and bustling cities. Every stop feels like a mini adventure.
I couldn't resist taking a pony ride to explore the countryside along the way, which added an extra dose of whimsical charm to my journey.
What's on my Pink Tutu agenda for the rest of my Prague escapade?
Prague is brimming with creativity! Tomorrow, I’m checking out the National Gallery (to immerse myself in some lovely artwork) and a delightful boutique called “Atelier de Femme” (they’ve got the most beautiful fashion! They’ve also got an array of pink tutu-worthy items I’ll have to indulge in. What’s a trip to Prague without a little retail therapy?)
You’ll have to wait till next Wednesday to hear about how the ballet was, my little escapade to the National Gallery, and how the tutu-shopping went!
Until next time, keep twirling! 🩰💖
