Hello my darling tutu-lovers! It’s Wednesday again, and that means a brand-new Pink Tutu post for you all! I'm back in my element, feeling completely fabulous after a whirlwind week in Prague. This truly magical city has stolen a little piece of my heart (and my wardrobe!) with its charming cobblestones, stunning architecture, and an atmosphere that feels like you’ve stepped straight into a fairytale.
But before we delve into Prague’s hidden gems, let’s talk about why I’m here, shall we? You all know I have a passion for dance – a deep and unwavering love that drives me to chase those twinkling stage lights all over the globe. So, naturally, a trip to Prague had to be on the list!
This week, I was blessed to see a magnificent performance at the beautiful National Theatre – the very place where Antonín Dvořák’s masterpiece, Rusalka, was first staged! It’s said to be the most beautiful theatre in Prague, and after witnessing its sheer grandeur and the mesmerising performance of the Prague National Ballet, I’d be hard-pressed to disagree!
Oh, my darling tutus! There were so many glorious creations swirling and gliding on stage. I spotted several classic tulle tutus, their soft, billowing layers looking absolutely breathtaking under the soft spotlight, but also a stunning, almost futuristic, contemporary tutu. This was crafted from a latticework of thin, gleaming white strips, so wonderfully intricate and elegant, like a graceful, shimmering spiderweb. Just the sight of them sent a thrill down my spine and made me long to pirouette across the stage myself!
I must tell you, before I even saw the show, Prague’s ballet scene had me completely captivated. Even walking through the city, I could feel its passion for dance in the air. There were little ballet studios tucked away on charming, cobbled streets, each one a welcoming space for little ballerinas like myself to lose themselves in the art of graceful movement. The energy, the rhythm, the sheer beauty of the form – it was almost palpable!
And then, there’s the shopping! I swear, darling tutus, Prague has to be the most stylish city in the whole world! The boutiques on the Old Town Square are just bursting with exquisite vintage treasures, stunning accessories, and everything a ballet-loving girl could ever dream of. I found the most delightful pair of ballet flats, embroidered with tiny rosebuds, which are practically begging to be twirled around the cobblestones.
Now, no trip to Prague is complete without experiencing its enchanting history. We took a lovely horse-drawn carriage ride through the charming, narrow streets of Prague, and my heart fluttered with every clip-clop of the horses' hooves. There were magnificent churches, elegant palaces, and the captivating story of the Prague Clock. Legend has it that the clock was crafted to represent the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV’s, fascination with astrology. But just like everything else in this city, the Clock also has a fascinating and rather dramatic legend!
Did you know that a master clockmaker had his hands amputated after finishing the clock so he could never make a more beautiful one? This was a cruel act, motivated by the envious king! And here’s another fact that’ll leave you astounded – there’s a secret doorway inside the astronomical clock! This doorway, according to legend, only appears on the last night of June, and it grants entrance to a secret world beyond the everyday. It’s such a romantic idea!
But enough of Prague's enchanting history, let’s get back to tutus, shall we? And for the pièce de résistance of my trip, the moment that completely stole my heart – the incredible show at the Estates Theatre. Did you know this historic gem played a critical role in the life of Mozart? Legend tells us that the premiere of Mozart’s beloved opera, “The Marriage of Figaro”, was presented at this beautiful theatre.
And you wouldn't believe the fabulous fashion I saw! Some of the dancers wore ballet shoes with gorgeous jeweled embellishments and the costumes were so captivating! One of them was actually based on the story of a mythical figure - a creature with wings and eyes that held magic! And they completely captured my heart with their beauty, their elegant flow, and their delicate grace. I must confess, they really took the "dance like no one’s watching" adage to a whole new level!
Now, you all know that travelling on the Pink Tutu budget demands some clever choices and a few strategic compromises. And I must admit, travelling by train does allow you to soak in all the delightful landscapes! But when you’re on the lookout for a really unique adventure, why not try a pony? We decided to take a leisurely, gentle, pony ride through the breathtaking landscapes of Prague and I swear, it felt like riding through a magical dreamscape. My darling tutus, those landscapes are breathtaking - and the gentle rhythm of the pony's hooves as we cantered along made the whole experience unforgettable. Plus, I just loved that magical feeling of having this incredibly graceful creature carry me through the rolling countryside.
My sweet tutus, I've discovered a special treat that I just had to share – a delectable Czech cake that they call tvarohové buchtičky. The pastry itself is impossibly soft, a delightful blend of buttery dough and fluffy, vanilla-kissed cheese – the perfect afternoon indulgence!
Of course, I couldn’t leave Prague without paying homage to its legendary dancing tradition! So, darling tutus, brace yourselves for a spectacular picture from my trip – me, standing right outside the Prague National Ballet building in a brand-new pink tutu, ready to pirouette my heart out! It's almost an ode to every ballet enthusiast in the world. And why shouldn't I do something daring and flamboyant, after all? It's what I do best.
Prague is truly a place where dreams come to life, and with each twirl, I get closer to my ultimate goal, of making the world a pinker, more fabulous, and definitely more tutus-clad place!
