Croydon’s dance scene is absolutely thriving, and it’s the perfect time to snuggle up in your chicest coat, grab a latte, and dive into a world of pirouettes and pointe shoes. Now, before I launch into all the amazing shows I’ve seen, I need to address the pink elephant in the room – my love affair with tutus. Let’s be honest, it’s not just a love affair, it’s an obsession! And this winter, Croydon’s ballets have been giving me major tutu goals. Think cascading tulle, shimmering sequins, and enough sparkle to rival a disco ball. We’re not talking traditional, dainty tutus here, my friends. This season has been all about bold, glamorous, and yes, sometimes slightly over-the-top tutu designs. I’m talking tutus that could stop traffic, and I’m here for it. #Tutuwinter indeed!
From Swan Lake to… Disco Queen?
The traditional ballets like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker always hold a special place in my heart, but this winter Croydon offered a delightful mix of classic and contemporary. There’s something exhilarating about seeing familiar ballets presented in new and innovative ways. One production of Swan Lake featured a dazzling, futuristic backdrop, taking the choreography to a whole new level. But the highlight of the season for me? The Ballet Noir production at the Fairfield Halls, which included a stunning modern interpretation of Swan Lake, complete with a shimmering black tutu that left the entire audience speechless.
But beyond the classics, there’s a new breed of ballet popping up, and Croydon’s welcoming them with open arms. One performance, Glitter & Grace, fused classical ballet with, you guessed it, disco! I know, I know, sounds wild, right? But trust me, it was genius. Imagine a perfectly executed grand jeté accompanied by the funky beat of the Bee Gees – it was a truly mesmerizing experience. This new wave of creativity shows that ballet isn't stuck in the past, it's evolving, it's daring, it's exciting!

Another aspect I love about the Croydon ballet season is the energy! These performances aren’t just for stuffy old ballet aficionados - they are all about community.
