Happy New Year darlings! Can you believe it's 2001 already? This year is set to be absolutely divine, I can just feel it! From Paris to New York, and every fabulous city in between, the ballet world is truly blooming. Now let me fill you in on all the delicious delights I've seen this month.
A Night in the City of Lights
Well, darling, the most glamorous city on earth - Paris, of course! - has always been the perfect setting for an enchanting ballet experience. Last week I saw "Giselle" at the Palais Garnier - the opulence! The beauty! It simply took my breath away. I was absolutely swept off my feet, and frankly darling, I was left longing for a bit of Victor Hugo in my life. The ballet was utterly divine and perfectly executed, and it just confirmed my firm belief that the Paris Opera Ballet is one of the most sophisticated ballet companies on earth. Let's just say the whole experience was truly heavenly, my darlings!
An Ode to the American Dream
From Paris I jetted off to New York - I do love a good trip! - and was immediately smitten by the energy of the American ballet scene. My darlings, I have to say that I am absolutely enthralled by the creativity of American choreographers. It's a truly invigorating approach to ballet, so wonderfully uninhibited! The Balanchine repertoire at New York City Ballet is a real joy to behold. Those men, simply breathtaking! My heart went a flutter at the "Serenade" which was pure elegance and so well danced.
London Calling, My Dears!
And naturally, no ballet odyssey is complete without a visit to London! Now, I must admit I am slightly biased because I happen to adore Covent Garden, and so do you, darlings, admit it. It's all about the incredible ambiance of the building. And last month, I was totally mesmerized by the Royal Ballet’s rendition of "Romeo and Juliet". The raw passion and emotions, beautifully expressed through every single step - simply phenomenal, darling! And darling, can I just say that this year's cast for the Royal Ballet is phenomenal? Just look at the sheer talent, the passion, the sheer exuberance! My personal favorite - oh darling, how can I even choose? - has to be the mesmerizing Mariinsky Ballet - always the epitome of classic elegance, and just utterly perfect for those exquisite ballets such as "Swan Lake".
Beyond the Traditional
However, darling, we must acknowledge that ballet today is all about pushing the boundaries, about embracing the avant-garde and seeking new and exhilarating experiences, about finding a dance that will touch us deeply. Of course, I adore a good Tchaikovsky, don't you? And a whirl through "The Sleeping Beauty" or "Swan Lake". But my dears, let's face it: sometimes our souls crave a bit more edge, a touch of the unexpected. So, let me tell you about "The Moth". Now, this, my darlings, is not your usual balletic fairy tale, and I mean that in the most exciting way. "The Moth" is simply an innovative exploration of darkness and light - yes, you read correctly - a contemporary dance extravaganza set to the pulsating beats of a DJ! And what a captivating spectacle, simply electrifying! And I can't help but give you a little tip-off - keep your eyes peeled for this fabulous ballet that I've just discovered from the Netherlands, “It’s Raining Men!” It is truly revolutionary, taking traditional ballet movements and pushing them into a brave new world of gender fluidity and bold choreography.
