December 2005: A Ballet-Loverās Guide to the Globe
Darling, itās December! The air is crisp, the city glitters, and a shiver of anticipation runs through my very being. As a woman who lives and breathes for the dance, nothing could excite me more than the kaleidoscope of ballet events that this month promises. From the grandeur of the Royal Opera House to the intimate charm of independent studios, a dazzling array of productions await our discerning eyes. So, letās step into our finest Louboutins and embark on a whirlwind tour, shall we?
The Royal Ballet: A Tale of Two ClassicsFirst stop, my darlings, Covent Garden. Where else can you be swept away by the elegance of Balanchineās Jewels, a timeless trio of ballets celebrating the brilliance of three gemstones: Emerald, Ruby and Diamond. I must confess, there is nothing quite like the diamond finale, where every shimmering move speaks of the eternal beauty and exquisite precision of Balanchineās vision. Itās sheer enchantment, and I can already see myself dancing in front of the magnificent chandelier of the Royal Opera House. But alas, only in dreams!
And then thereās the return of The Sleeping Beauty. Now, Iām no princess, but let me tell you, a fairy tale ballet has always held a special place in my heart. A whirlwind of waltzes, a cascade of tutus, and the classic story of Auroraās slumber, what could be more romantic? The Royal Ballet, as ever, are masters of this glorious work, and Iām certain youāll be completely smitten. Think glittering sets, glorious costumes, and a cast who embodies each character to perfection.
Don't miss the wonderful Viviana Durante as Aurora. Her every port de bras, each effortless jetƩ, just pure artistry!
Beyond the Royal Ballet: Treasures Around the WorldNow, my darlings, let's venture further. Paris is calling! The Ć©toile of the Paris Opera Ballet, Sylvie Guillem, is a captivating performer. In the majestic Palais Garnier, her grace and intensity ignite the stage. She returns with the captivating and dramatic choreography of Mats Ek, a Swedish dance wizard. He's known for his avant-garde vision, his choreography pushing the boundaries of traditional ballet, and yet somehow itās always beautiful, deeply moving and utterly mesmerising. And the pairing of Sylvie and Ek, well, itās nothing short of legendary.
Across the pond in New York City, my absolute favorite contemporary dance company, Martha Graham Dance Company, will be showcasing their Appalachian Spring, an exploration of American history set to Aaron Coplandās glorious score. It's raw, it's emotive, it's an undeniable tour de force that embodies everything I love about modern dance: its rawness, its unfiltered emotions, its captivatingly powerful energy.
Dancing Beyond the Main Stage: An Intimate GlimpseLet's delve a little deeper, darling. Away from the grandeur of the opera houses and beyond the red velvet seats, the world of ballet also flourishes in the intimacy of independent studios and small theatres. Here, the pure art of dance shines through without the theatrics. The independent company, āMovements in Motion,ā is presenting their own production of Swan Lake. The original, yet daring approach makes this performance a real jewel. I hear the choreographer, an acclaimed dancer herself, has put a modern twist on the classic story. And the costumes? Apparently, sheās been inspired by the art deco movement! I can only imagine how breathtaking itāll be!
And while we're talking about modern interpretations, you mustnāt miss āUrban Grace,ā a contemporary company known for their powerful and moving narratives. They are currently performing their piece āBreaking Barriers.ā Expect raw passion, raw emotion and incredible movement ā just everything youād want from contemporary dance.
Behind the Scenes: More than Just DancingMy darling, ballets are more than just graceful pirouettes and soaring grand jetĆ©s. Itās about storytelling, about emotion, about the very essence of humanity expressed through the language of movement.
Thereās an amazing exhibition coming up at the Victoria and Albert Museum, āBallet: A Century of Dance,ā featuring an archive of some of the most iconic ballet posters from the last hundred years. A treat for the eyes, and a real voyage through the history of this powerful art form. Just imagine: Degasā dancing ballerinas, posters promoting Diaghilev's Ballets Russes - it's pure ballet history! A true ballet aficionado must see this!
Ballet beyond the theatre: A Ballet Loverās LifestyleWe donāt just dance it, my darling, we live it, and even more, we adorn it. This December, be sure to adorn your wardrobe with elegant ballerina-inspired pieces. Let me guide you through the perfect December wardrobe:
*A timeless classic: A flowing chiffon maxi dress, a piece that effortlessly captures the beauty and grace of ballet. Imagine a delicate floral pattern, the softest shades of pink and blush - perfect for that special ballet-themed evening at the Royal Opera House. And donāt forget a stunning pair of elegant pumps or heels to compliment your flowy skirt.
*A bold statement: An edgy black jumpsuit, a dash of masculine chic meets the sophistication of ballet. Embrace those dramatic shapes, a hint of sequins for an evening performance. Or, take a relaxed approach during the day and combine it with a flowing pashmina and statement jewelry ā the perfection of Parisian cool meets ballet elegance.
*The perfect accessory: The quintessential ballet flat, a footwear choice that epitomizes the elegance and femininity of the dance. The iconic ballerina shoe, perfect for a casual yet stylish day in the city or for running errands. You know me, darling, comfortable yet fashionable!
Embrace the beauty of ballet, not just in its perfection but in its spirit.
Happy December, darling, letās dance!
