Darling, February! Ah, the month of romance, the season of passionate reds and deep velvets, where love whispers in the air. And for us, darlings, for us ballet lovers, it’s a month bursting with beauty and artistry. From the snow-dusted landscapes of Russia to the sun-drenched shores of California, there’s a balletic treat awaiting on every stage.
I’ve been lucky enough to flit around the globe this month, embracing the magic of the greatest companies. And let me tell you, darlings, it's been a whirlwind of sparkling tutus, graceful leaps, and of course, some truly exquisite storytelling.
From St Petersburg, With Love:First, we must absolutely visit the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the pinnacle of Russian ballet, and one that makes every other theatre in the world pale in comparison, don’t you agree, darlings? This February, I had the pleasure of watching the Bolshoi’s production of Swan Lake. My dears, a masterpiece! This rendition is absolutely unforgettable – so much passion, a hint of tragedy, and so very, very Russian. Tchaikovsky’s score? Absolutely breathtaking. The story is like a bittersweet symphony; each note of the music vibrated through me.
- Speaking of passion, Oksana Skorik, the leading ballerina, simply melted the stage with her fiery performance as Odette. The grace, the vulnerability, the absolute conviction in every single move - oh, I was mesmerized! And her Odile? Fiery, almost demonic! You could see the sheer strength of her, the dark power radiating from her, with her jet black swan's wings. Truly magnificent.
- Of course, the corps de ballet – they were nothing short of impeccable! Perfect formations, an ethereal flow, like waves of movement rippling across the stage. The entire experience, darling, it was just… magical.
It truly reminded me why the Bolshoi is a world leader.
Californian DreamsFrom the snow-covered beauty of Russia, I hopped a jet to the sun-drenched state of California, a complete contrast. This is where I encountered a contemporary production that blew me away! At San Francisco’s illustrious Alonzo King LINES Ballet, I discovered "The Unseen," a piece so beautifully crafted and thought-provoking that it had me lost in contemplation long after the curtains closed.
- This was contemporary ballet, darlings, a truly mesmerizing blend of dance and visual art, so full of depth and feeling, a complete departure from the traditional style, yet still oh so elegant and refined.
- Each dancer’s body, each movement, seemed to carry within it a story. The choreography was a conversation, a poem, an exploration of human experience that left you deeply moved. It captured a real sense of our connection to nature, the beauty of human movement, the unseen force that underlies all of us. Absolutely mesmerizing.
But alas, my travels didn’t stop there! I was whisked off to Italy for a breathtaking production of Romeo & Juliet by the legendary Aterballetto company in Reggio Emilia. This one is certainly for all the romantics, darling! Romeo & Juliet – what’s not to adore, the classic love story that resonates throughout history. But Aterballetto took it to another level. The set, a blend of baroque opulence and modern austerity. The costuming… darling, I must tell you, they were like art pieces, both classical yet with a modern twist!
- As for the choreography, oh my goodness, the storytelling! Each move was deliberate, an emotive conversation in motion. The desperation, the agony, the exquisite blossoming love of Juliet and Romeo – it was all woven into their steps.
- The performances were simply superb. The strength, the intensity – the way they captured the torment, the unyielding passion of the story, it brought me to tears! This production had a raw and emotional depth I’ve rarely seen. Absolutely captivating!
Of course, no journey is complete without a trip to Paris! Oh, Paris, the City of Love. And it certainly did not disappoint. At the beautiful Palais Garnier – the opulent, ornate jewel of French ballet – I found myself mesmerized by the Paris Opera Ballet. Their program this month featured the most breathtaking rendition of Giselle I’ve ever seen. Giselle – a tragic, timeless tale that has inspired artists for generations, isn’t it beautiful, darlings?
- I was especially taken by the ethereal portrayal of Giselle by the breathtaking dancer, Eudora Balzari. She was exquisite – graceful, tragic, and oh so beautiful, She really brought the heroine to life, showcasing both her fragile vulnerability and her fierce spirit,
- But what truly impressed me was the brilliance of the ensemble dancers. Each movement, so precise, so fluid – the choreography so elegantly interwoven, creating an almost surreal visual landscape.
The performance was pure magic! Paris always has a way of pulling you in with its artistic energy. It’s not just the music, it’s the culture, the air, everything. It sets the stage for such remarkable moments of artistic magic! And at the Palais Garnier, darling, you are surrounded by centuries of that history and artistry.
London's Dance DelightsAfter Paris, it was on to London, where the Royal Opera House Ballet took centre stage. Now, I know what you're thinking, darlings: a predictable choice. But, oh, dear readers, trust me, the magic of Covent Garden is just as enthralling today as it was a century ago! The program this month, “Four Corners," was a brilliant showcase of modern dance pieces – quite daring, but in a wonderfully polished and elegant way.
- One highlight for me was “Infra," by the groundbreaking Wayne McGregor. A whirlwind of bold, athletic movement, raw emotion, and an electrifying energy that thrummed through the entire auditorium. McGregor, darling, is such a brilliant talent – a visionary in the world of modern ballet!
- And for a delightful touch of lighter fare, "The Concert," choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, was an absolute delight – playful and cheeky, a joyful nod to the classic Russian ballet tradition. The dancers' skill and timing, simply flawless!
London's dance scene is simply teeming with creativity. This was the perfect way to finish off my whirlwind month. It was so much more than just watching ballet, darling; it was about connecting with the spirit of dance. A global journey through artistic masterpieces.
The beauty, the raw power, the exquisite technical skill - each production, each step, a testament to the enduring power of this art form. Ballet has captivated me for decades and I see why the allure continues to fascinate, darling. It’s more than just dancing; it's about expression, emotion, and that unforgettable feeling that takes your breath away!
So let us all revel in the beauty and the wonder of ballet – it truly is a global celebration of artistic brilliance! Stay chic, my dear friends. Until next month….
