The World of Dance: March 2022

Darling, it's March! The month where the world truly awakens from its winter slumber, the air buzzes with excitement, and our schedules fill up with a veritable plethora of dazzling dance productions. Of course, we all know a good show isn’t about quantity, it’s about the quality, my dears. This month’s line-up doesn’t disappoint, offering a selection that is sure to have you swooning, captivated and – dare I say – teary-eyed. From the hallowed halls of Covent Garden to the bustling stages of Broadway, and the chic Parisian ballet companies to the intimate theaters of Prague, we’ve got a month’s worth of dazzling spectacles that will leave you feeling utterly inspired.

But before I start gushing about the intricacies of pirouettes and the ethereal beauty of leaps, allow me to start with my ultimate top picks for this month. They're simply divine, darling, simply divine!

My Absolute Must-Sees:
  • The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London
  • Let's be honest, it's always a pleasure to be in the presence of the Royal Ballet, isn't it? This month they are staging the one and only, Giselle. Oh, this classic, a masterpiece of love and betrayal set against the backdrop of a misty forest and haunted by a mysterious presence. My darling, if you only see one ballet this month, make it this one.

  • New York City Ballet, David H. Koch Theater, New York
  • Oh, those daring New Yorkers are truly a treat! The City Ballet has a whole month of productions scheduled, each one brimming with dazzling technical skills. And who am I to deny the joy of watching the elegance and artistry of the talented dancers that this company boasts? They have a performance of George Balanchine’s Agon which I hear is positively sublime. Simply divine!

  • Dutch National Ballet, Het Nationale Ballet, Amsterdam
  • Oh my! Our European counterparts are absolutely smashing this season, aren't they? I have a feeling that their rendition of Romeo & Juliet is set to steal our hearts this month. A classic love story retold, complete with an intoxicating score and exquisite choreography.

Let me whisk you through a whirlwind tour of this month’s delightful ballet calendar, shall we? Each piece will add its own exquisite hue to your personal dance palette!

London: Oh, the city that never sleeps… and yet never seems to stop enchanting us with breathtaking performances. Let’s get our fill of art deco glitz and glamour at the Royal Opera House. They are offering up Sleeping Beauty, an absolute feast for the eyes with spectacular costuming, sets, and of course, the beautiful, graceful ballet. Don't be surprised to find yourself captivated by the elegance and enchantment of this enchanting production.

If you want something with a little more “oomph”, head over to the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. I'm rather curious about the latest production from Rambert. Their program includes The Rite of Spring, a groundbreaking and powerful ballet with electrifying movement. You’ll see a raw and powerful interpretation of this classic, pushing the boundaries of what we consider dance. For those who like a little drama and intrigue in their entertainment, it's a must-see.

New York City: My dearest, New York, never fails to amaze. If you're craving the traditional grandeur of ballet, the New York City Ballet will be performing a mixed program. This offers a fascinating journey through diverse styles of dance, perfect for showcasing the remarkable versatility of their dancers. Do not miss The Four Temperaments, it’s one of Balanchine’s most famous ballets and it is always a delight. I just love the different costumes and set design – they truly make a statement, you know? A captivating blend of technical precision and artistic expression. A must-see for those seeking both form and flow.

On a completely different note, darling, don’t you think a trip to the Metropolitan Opera for La Traviata is quite simply the most sensational and romantic thing to do for a date night in the city? I’m utterly charmed by Verdi's score, it truly captivates your soul.

Paris: Oui, darling! The City of Love always delivers. The Paris Opera Ballet is a veritable treasure trove of beauty. I adore this ballet company – there's such a touch of elegance and panache that is simply unique. This month, they’ll be hosting the captivating Giselle and La Bayadère, both renowned for their sheer beauty and masterful choreography. La Bayadère in particular, a story of passion, sacrifice, and the mystical power of the Temple Dancer, it is positively enthralling. They don’t call this company the Paris Opera Ballet for nothing!

If you find yourself with an evening free and a taste for something new, I strongly suggest visiting the Chaillot-National Dance Centre, it's such a hidden gem, truly divine. They are hosting an enchanting contemporary piece that is simply exquisite and a true testament to the artistry of contemporary dance.

Prague: Ah, Prague, the heart of Bohemia. I find it rather endearing – they're quite modest, yet incredibly passionate. I recommend heading to the National Theatre to see their version of the classic ballet, The Nutcracker. They do it with such joy, truly capturing the heart and soul of Tchaikovsky's score and this heartwarming tale.

Berlin: My darling, oh Berlin. What a powerhouse of talent and art, brimming with vibrant contemporary pieces that always leave me feeling invigorated. The Staatsoper Berlin is always ahead of the game when it comes to experimental and avant-garde creations. You must take a peek, darlings. Do keep in mind, a night of dance there is guaranteed to get your brain cells buzzing, a most exciting challenge. This month, they have a performance by the Berlin State Ballet , featuring a renowned choreographer pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance.

If you crave something more classical, The Deutsche Oper Berlin boasts an incredible production of Swan Lake. Such grace, such beauty, a breathtaking ballet that captures the beauty of human love and the timeless elegance of ballet.

Around the world: For those of you who are a bit more adventurous and enjoy the thrills of travel, a truly exciting contemporary dance festival is happening in Sydney this month, with a focus on works that will make you stop, take note and feel something profoundly beautiful. Do try to experience the diverse, powerful energy that is taking shape here – truly inspirational, and definitely an enriching adventure. I dare say it’s something I need to add to my “To Do” list, don’t you think? Don’t worry, my dearest, I’ll share all the latest fashion updates from my travels once I’m back in my luxurious Parisian apartment.

If you have a few more days, darling, the Seoul International Dance Festival will be offering a thrilling spectacle, with breathtaking performances from all around the globe. You’ll see styles that blend with traditional dance from all cultures, creating something truly original, fresh and full of wonder.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: where are my gorgeous dance-inspired looks and trends to get you totally on pointe this month? Don't you worry, darling. In a world full of so many exciting performances, the need for daring, fashion-forward looks is even more pronounced. This month, be inspired by the elegant grace of Giselle, embrace the power and fluidity of The Rite of Spring, and dare to showcase a little drama with an ensemble that echoes Swan Lake’s magical realism.

I am, of course, always thrilled to offer a few tips from my ever-growing fashion diary.

Fashion Focus:
  • Silky Tones: As the season begins to soften and embrace the whispers of spring, the perfect colour to embody this transition is a luscious pale lavender, reminiscent of spring blooms. Don't shy away from a splash of colour - think coral hues or even emerald green, and pair these with luxurious textures like silky chiffon, lace or velvet for an undeniably elegant and romantic feel.

  • Classic Elegance: I find ballet performances are the ideal time to indulge in that quintessential feminine flair, so opt for classic styles and beautiful cuts. Try an A-line midi dress or a statement pencil skirt, both flattering and utterly chic.

  • Dramatic Embellishments: Darling, you know my love for details, so embrace this opportunity to sparkle with elegance and poise. I am quite partial to a touch of shimmering embellishments on a dress, or maybe an accessory that catches the light. We are dancing, after all, so add a touch of the dramatic – a stunning broach, perhaps, or a statement cuff with bold stones. It will add that perfect hint of glitz that never fails to make heads turn.
  • Timeless Footwear: I always recommend a timeless, versatile heel or pump to compliment these elegant outfits. And if your shoes catch a little light, a small twinkle to make your step all the more enchanting?

My dears, I believe there's a ballet for everyone, waiting to enchant and ignite your soul. Don't just see the performance - feel the passion, the emotion, the beauty in motion, the brilliance that these dance icons pour their hearts and souls into. Let’s go forth and enjoy the symphony of elegance, emotion and inspiration this season brings!

XOXO,
Your Dancing Diva
