Pink Tutu Rome: Ciao Bella! Post #24
Wednesday, 22nd November 1995
Buongiorno from the Eternal City! The air is crisp, the sun is shining (even though it’s nearly November!) and the streets are buzzing with a vibrant energy that’s infectious. Rome has captured my heart, it's the perfect blend of ancient history and modern charm.
This week has been a whirlwind of beautiful sights, mouth-watering smells, and stunning architecture. It's everything I imagined, and more!
It all started with the train journey, of course. There's nothing quite like the thrill of seeing the landscape roll by from a train window. I spent most of the trip engrossed in my favourite ballet book, 'The Firebird' - a tale of love, adventure and magic!
As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the sheer magnificence of Rome's architecture. Every corner is a work of art - from the iconic Colosseum, where gladiators once battled for their lives, to the breathtaking St Peter's Basilica, the very heart of Catholicism.
The Trevi Fountain is everything I dreamt it would be! The glistening waters sparkle in the sun, surrounded by stunning sculptures. It's a real feast for the eyes, and of course, I had to toss a coin in - tradition dictates it brings good fortune for a return visit. (And who wouldn't want to come back to Rome, right?)
One thing that truly excites me is the sheer number of historical sights – there's something for every interest. This afternoon I'm off to the Roman Forum, where I can imagine the hustle and bustle of ancient Roman life, complete with chariot races and the odd gladiatorial battle. I might even be inspired to try a twirl or two amongst the ruins – the history will feel so alive!
But it's not all ancient ruins! I discovered the most charming little boutique yesterday tucked away in a quiet corner of Trastevere – a hidden gem that had to be mine! I just couldn't resist a beautiful coral pink silk scarf to complement my ballet shoes. (Of course!) The woman in the shop was so sweet; she actually complemented me on my pink tutu, which was delightful.
Speaking of ballet, I’ve already planned my evenings at the opera house. Rome's opera scene is said to be among the finest in the world! I'm most looking forward to a production of 'La Traviata'. There’s a certain irony about it for me – the drama, the emotions, the beauty of the performance - they mirror my own love for dance and life, which feels like a play of emotions itself!
And who knows, perhaps I might even be inspired by Rome to take up street performances. After all, it's not a new idea, the first ballets were street dances after all. What better backdrop for a little ballerina show than the stunning Piazza Navona! My pink tutu and I will fit in perfectly, believe me!
And did I mention the food? The Italian food! So much deliciousness! Yesterday, I treated myself to the most delectable carbonara - creamy, cheesy, and topped with a generous sprinkle of parmesan cheese! I almost forgot I was trying to eat healthily… But then again, life's too short for strict diets, isn't it? (Plus, all that dancing needs fuel! Right?!)
Tonight, I'm indulging in another culinary delight - spaghetti alla gricia - the smoky and salty bacon really brings out the flavour!
Before I finish, I have to share a little secret. You might not believe this, but I stumbled upon the most magical little shop, tucked away in the cobblestone streets, overflowing with the most glorious selection of tutus you’ve ever seen. Of course, I bought one for myself - a soft, delicate lavender tutu - absolutely perfect for my evening strolls under the Italian stars! (Perhaps you should check it out on your next visit! Wink, wink!)
Tomorrow, I'm heading off to explore more of the city, my camera at the ready, and my heart filled with a passion for discovery. If you are in the area and wish to join me, leave a message on my website! You never know, you might even convince me to take a ballet class or two!
Stay tuned, because next week I'll share my adventures in the Vatican and tell you all about the stunning Michelangelo masterpiece that nearly stole my heart. (But not really – because nothing can ever top my love of the perfect pink tutu! Ha!)
Until next Wednesday, darling!
Love,
Emma
P.S. Did you see this month's issue of 'Ballet Weekly'? The article on "pink ballet" made my heart sing! So many exciting projects coming up. We really are a pink tutu force to be reckoned with!
