Pink Tutu Rome: Week 23 – Ciao Bella, Rome!

Buongiorno from the Eternal City! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina, back with another Pink Tutu adventure. This week, I'm whisking you off to Rome, Italy! 🇮🇹 The air here is thick with history, the streets are bustling with life, and I can feel a little piece of my heart flutter with each click of my ballet shoes on the cobblestones.

It wouldn't be a Pink Tutu journey without a little fashion flair, wouldn't it? I packed my favourite blush pink tutu, the one with the sequined details that catch the light just like the Roman sunset. And, naturally, my trusty pink leather backpack that holds my ballet essentials and a secret stash of pink marshmallows - a girl's gotta have treats, don't you agree?

I arrived in Rome via train, my favourite mode of transport! Watching the scenery fly by as we chugged through the countryside was like watching a moving painting come to life. It was so peaceful, so calming, and the perfect way to prepare myself for the whirlwind that was Rome!

Exploring Rome’s Historical Treasures:

Now, Rome isn't just about pasta and gelato (although they are absolute MUST-HAVES!), it's a city steeped in history, a living museum you can explore on foot! We began at the Colosseum, it's almost impossible to truly grasp the magnitude of this incredible place. I could almost imagine the gladiators fighting, the roars of the crowd, and the incredible spectacle of it all.

Next, we took a walk through the Roman Forum – such a magical place! Wandering amongst the ruins of ancient temples, basilicas, and senate buildings, I felt transported back in time. The air buzzed with stories, and I could imagine Roman senators debating law, children playing amongst the ruins, and traders selling their wares.

Of course, no visit to Rome is complete without seeing the Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. The sheer size and magnificence of St. Peter's Basilica took my breath away. The incredible art, the intricate detail, and the spiritual atmosphere were a feast for the senses.

Rome on Pointe: Ballet Delights:

You can’t visit Rome without catching a show, so, naturally, I booked tickets to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. This beautiful theatre, designed by the renowned architect, Marchiondi, boasts incredible acoustics and a stunning interior. This was no ordinary opera, folks. We watched "Swan Lake," and the performance was breathtakingly beautiful! The dancers moved with such grace and precision, every leap and twirl echoing in the grand hall, that it felt like the whole theatre was floating on a cloud of enchantment. It reminded me of why I fell in love with ballet in the first place – the artistry, the passion, the sheer beauty of movement!

From Stage to Street:

The ballet performances in Rome were incredible, but Rome’s magic goes beyond the theatre, right into the streets. Even wandering through the narrow cobbled streets of Trastevere, where charming cafes spill out onto the sidewalks, you can feel the energy and vibrance of this incredible city. I spotted street performers doing a mix of classical and modern dance, some even had little tutus! The music, the movements, and the joyful energy flowed like the River Tiber.

Roman Delights & Pink Tutu Style:

Speaking of delights, let's talk shopping. Shopping in Rome is a treat for the senses. Every turn on a cobbled street is an invitation to browse boutiques filled with elegant Italian leather, handmade shoes, and clothes that scream “sophisticated style”. I found a beautiful pink scarf, a perfect match for my favourite pink tutu, at a charming little shop in Trastevere. The shopkeeper complimented my dancing style. Maybe she just loved my tutu!

Naturally, my days in Rome have been a symphony of delicious smells and tantalising tastes. The rich, earthy aroma of coffee beans, the sweet scent of freshly baked bread, and the tantalising tang of ripe tomatoes fill the air, beckoning you to indulge.

And, the gelato, my fellow Pink Tutu lovers? Forget everything you thought you knew about ice cream. It’s a creamy, delicious explosion of flavour that sends your taste buds on a magical journey. I tried a delicate pistachio and a rich chocolate flavour – heaven in a cone!

Until Next Week:

Rome, you stole a piece of my heart. You've reminded me that there is beauty in every corner, and that the world is a stage for our own adventures, a canvas waiting for our dance.

For now, I'm heading back to Derbyshire, England, but Rome, oh Rome, I'll be back!

Don't forget to join me every Wednesday for a new Pink Tutu travel adventure! Until next time, keep twirling, keep smiling, and most importantly, keep wearing pink tutus!

Much Love, Emma
