Pink Tutu Rome: #140 - Ciao Bella from Rome!

Wednesday 11th February 1998

Hello, darling Tutus!

Well, here I am, perched precariously on a sunny terrace in Rome, a cappuccino warming my hands and a gelato melting blissfully on my tongue. Yes, I've finally arrived in the Eternal City, and let me tell you, it's every bit as magical as I dreamt!

This is post number 140 of my Pink Tutu Rome blog, my weekly Wednesday dispatch from this magnificent city, and it feels so good to be back on the continent! You might be wondering how I fund these fabulous trips. Well, let's just say my tutu twirls and leaps have been a little more rigorous these past few weeks, taking on a couple of extra shows to keep my travel fund well-stocked. But the magic of travel is so worth it, especially when it's as beautiful and enchanting as Rome.

My journey started bright and early this morning, boarding the Eurostar in my trusty, chic travel tutu – a fetching, petal-pink number with a shimmering tulle overlay – in the bright and bustling station in Derby, the very same one where I boarded my train back when I was just a budding, young ballerina. It never ceases to amaze me how such a simple yet bold colour as pink can transform any journey. Of course, I wouldn't leave home without my trusty pink ballet bag, stuffed with all the essentials: a travel-sized ballet barre, my favourite pair of pointe shoes (never travel without the pointy tips!), a sparkling pink tiara (because every girl needs a crown on a trip!) and of course, my pink-tinted spectacles – a must-have to accentuate the beauty in every corner.

This journey wasn't a straight shot to Italy. It was a hop on and off, an exciting ride through France – Paris, the Eiffel Tower peeking at me through the train window - a journey that took me deeper into the continent before reaching this grand, bustling city. Every stop along the way brought new inspiration and glimpses of European life.

Arriving in Style:

I must say, my first impression of Rome is pure delight. It's a feast for the senses: vibrant colours, captivating sights, and the gentle hum of life unfolding on cobbled streets. Imagine a kaleidoscope of sights: majestic fountains, grand basilicas with soaring arches and awe-inspiring sculptures, charming piazzas buzzing with chatter and laughter, quaint little shops tucked away on sun-drenched lanes. It’s a vibrant, bustling city with a timeless charm that pulls you in.

Oh, and did I mention the food? It's an absolute culinary masterpiece! Imagine pizzas with crusts that could launch a thousand ships (seriously, the size is extraordinary), plates of steaming pasta that melt in your mouth, rich creamy coffees that make you forget all your woes... It’s pure bliss, darling! I already feel the kilos coming on!

Today’s adventures:

After settling in at a charming little hotel – complete with a balcony overlooking the vibrant Via Veneto – I decided to explore. And my dears, the streets themselves were an experience!

Imagine, cobbled streets lined with gorgeous boutiques - bursting with luxurious leather goods, shoes, exquisite gowns – a pink tutu enthusiast’s dream! I, of course, succumbed to a few irresistible finds – a cherry-red silk scarf, a delicate pink charm bracelet and the most dazzling pair of rose gold ballet flats I have ever seen!

My walk led me through the Roman Forum, where ancient history whispers on the wind. It’s hard to imagine gladiators fighting amongst these crumbling columns, but the raw energy and spirit of Rome’s ancient heritage is palpable. It's so awe-inspiring, especially for a little ballerina girl from Derby, it's just... amazing.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, I followed the aromas of fresh pasta and aromatic herbs to Campo de' Fiori, a lively marketplace where merchants, street vendors and artists spill out onto the streets. A little band played Italian melodies as the city's characters danced amongst each other, buying delicious fresh produce and creating a lively tapestry of street life. I just had to have some gelato – hazelnut, a rich chocolate, and a sprinkle of pink sugar because it is Rome, after all!

What's Next for Your Favourite Ballerina?:

Today was all about embracing Rome's charm and the delights it has to offer. I've discovered little cafés hidden in cobblestone alleys where the coffee smells intoxicating and the chatter echoes amongst the marble-lined walls. But that was just a taster of what this amazing city holds.

Tomorrow? Well, the Colosseum beckons - a giant, looming structure that evokes both awe and fear. Imagine gladiators battling amidst the roaring crowds, the scent of blood and dust lingering in the air! I think I need a special tutu for the occasion, something grand and perhaps a bit more... gladiatorial. I’m going to make it my goal to find the perfect pink tutu in this incredible city – watch out Rome! I'm coming to find you, Pink Tutu in the Colosseum!

My blog wouldn't be complete without my own little “Pink Tutu tip.” And here’s a tip from a tutu-wearing adventurer. Don't just stick to the tourist traps - get lost in the little streets. There’s magic to be found in those hidden gems. Just remember, every little corner of Rome tells a story – listen, watch, absorb and most importantly, let your heart guide you!

So, until next week my dear Tutu lovers!
