Pink Tutu Rome: Ciao Bella! (Post #207)
Wednesday 26th May 1999
Ciao, darlings! Emma here, back from the Eternal City, and oh, my stars, Rome is just… divine! It's been a whirlwind of cobbled streets, gelato-filled afternoons, and the most incredible architecture I've ever seen. And all in my trusty pink tutu, of course!
This week, I'm going to share my Roman adventures with you lovely lot, so grab your fanciest frocks (and perhaps a tutu or two), pour yourselves a glass of something bubbly (or a chilled Aperol spritz, if you're feeling adventurous), and let's get this party started!
Travel by Train
It might sound old fashioned, but darling, there's nothing like travelling by train, especially when you're on your own, free to indulge in a good book, some fancy pastries, and your very own soundtrack of musical theatre. And with my latest tutu – a shimmering lilac number with iridescent sequins – I was the picture of elegance as I cruised through the Italian countryside. It truly makes for the most magical, whimsical experience.
Landing in Rome
As the train pulled into Termini Station, I was immediately enchanted. Imagine the most incredible city in your mind – soaring fountains, golden buildings bathed in sunshine, the most charming cafes imaginable – that’s Rome for you, darlings. Stepping off the train into the warmth of a Roman spring felt like stepping into a dream, a dreamy, pink-tutu filled dream!
Shopping Extravaganza
Once I had settled into my divine hotel (which has the most divine courtyard garden – picture romantic roses and cobblestone paths – so very Rome!), I went straight to Via Condotti! Darling, I could barely contain myself! So many elegant boutiques and fabulous designs. My purse strings had to be held tight but I simply had to indulge in a beautiful vintage scarf, and a pair of Italian-made shoes with exquisite detailing – so elegant! I couldn't leave Rome without some truly chic fashion finds, could I?
Rome’s Architectural Jewels
Of course, you can't be in Rome without visiting the Colosseum and the Pantheon. The sheer scale and history of these iconic landmarks left me speechless! I actually did a pirouette right in front of the Colosseum, which seemed to elicit quite the response from some tourists! I must admit I felt a tad embarrassed, but they clapped, so I guess I got away with it!
I spent an entire day marvelling at the architectural splendour of Rome, feeling inspired by its rich history, art and culture.
A Glimpse into the World of Fashion
I am never one to miss out on a fabulous show. On Monday evening, I attended a wonderful fashion show for one of Rome’s most prestigious designers. It was so exciting to be surrounded by such creativity and glamour, all thanks to my wonderful network of ballet connections (you know I’m a firm believer in using all those connections, darling!). And guess what, there was a distinct pink theme in the collection! The designer, bless her heart, must have been channeling her inner ballerina, too. It definitely made my evening!
The Art of Italian Cuisine
Food, oh my dear, la cucina italiana, where do I begin? Everything I have tasted here has been pure perfection. The creamy pastas, the fresh mozzarella, the gelato – I've practically eaten my way through Rome. I can honestly say it's the best food I've had outside of my home-cooked delights back in Derbyshire! I did even treat myself to some fancy Italian biscuits at a shop that reminded me of those delicious little sweet shops I used to go to with my nan. A total indulgence, but darling, one needs a treat now and then, especially when it comes to such scrumptious delights!
Dancing Through the Streets
What is a ballerina to do with all this artistic energy but dance through the charming streets of Rome? And trust me, there were a few impromptu pirouettes (even though my heels were most unsuited to dancing on the cobblestone). Of course, I found my ideal backdrop for a ballet photo shoot at the Spanish Steps. How could I not take the opportunity? It’s not often that you have such a charming staircase for twirling on. The Italian air just feels different when you’re pirouetting through it!
The Roman Ballet
For a city so steeped in history and art, it was a delight to discover the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. On Tuesday evening, I spent a magical evening witnessing a beautiful ballet performance, which was infused with Italian drama and passion – utterly captivating! I even had the pleasure of meeting some talented young dancers backstage, and it was just so wonderful to share some tips about dancing and tutu-wearing with them. We really had the best conversation. I just knew that with their grace and passion they were destined for the best dance studios and theatres of the world!
Final Thoughts on Rome
So, darlings, Rome has truly enchanted me. The cobbled streets, the colourful architecture, the delicious food, and the most magical art and music scenes have completely captured my heart. And as I prepare to return home, with my new shoes and vintage scarf and, of course, a treasure trove of wonderful memories, I know that Rome will forever hold a special place in my heart, nestled amongst all my favourite ballet and theatre experiences.
Don’t forget to subscribe to Pink Tutu and join me on my next adventure! And remember, darling, life’s too short for drab dresses, always go for a tutu, especially when you're in a city as magnificent as Rome.
Ciao, and stay stylish,
Emma xx
P.S. I just got this amazing package! A collection of gorgeous ballet shoes in pink, blue, and a beautiful silver! Oh my, it's like my very own tutu collection just got even better. You know what this means, my darlings, new pictures, new dances and a new blog post, just you wait!
