Pink Tutu Rome: Post #252 – Exploring the Eternal City (2000-04-05)

Buongiorno, darling darlings! It's Wednesday, and you know what that means... time for a new post from yours truly, Emma, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina blogger!

This week, I'm bringing you live from the heart of the Eternal City - Rome! It's been a whirlwind of pasta, pizza, piazzas and, of course, tutus!

This trip has been fuelled by a fantastic performance at the Royal Opera House back in London - all the way back in February! That show was a right good one, and it brought in a good old chunk of change, so I’m here to explore Italy with my newfound riches!

After all, what's a trip to Italy without a dash of ballet? And Rome, with its incredible history and stunning architecture, is the perfect setting for some inspiring twirls.

The moment I stepped off the train - first-class, of course! I simply have to travel in style, don’t you agree? - I felt a sense of magic in the air. Rome just feels like a place where anything is possible!

I’ve already been to the Colosseum! Oh, the history, the stories, the atmosphere! You’ve just got to go there, darling! It felt almost sacred to me, and it definitely made me consider adding gladiator fight scenes to my upcoming ballet production! Now that would be an incredible performance! I wonder if anyone else would be brave enough to put on a pink tutu for battle...

But you know what, darlings? As much as I love exploring historical monuments, I truly believe that fashion is my armour! And when it comes to fashion, Rome certainly delivers. It's a veritable feast for the eyes, and the clothes shops here are absolutely divine!

On Wednesday morning, I had a blast shopping along Via Condotti - a real high street of heaven! All the designers you could ever dream of, plus gorgeous local boutiques. I snagged a stunning coral silk scarf - you just need to accessorize when you’re waltzing through the streets! I mean, think of all the gorgeous pictures! This vibrant colour just complements the amazing architecture of this wonderful city! Plus, I’ve got a couple of little surprises hidden away for you too – you'll be seeing my finds soon enough on the Pink Tutu website. Keep your eyes peeled, darling!

I even indulged in some lovely lunch at a small, tucked-away cafe off one of Rome’s less famous side streets, nestled away among some wonderful art galleries! I felt so peaceful – truly, darling! As I tucked into some delicious ravioli (and yes, I had to order a second portion!), I could truly imagine that all was right with the world, the sun was shining on my pink tutu, and nothing else mattered!

This afternoon I decided to pop into one of Rome’s stunning opera houses for some ballet inspiration, a fabulous Italian show, all about Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet!

But my true highlight of the day? It was that gorgeous evening walk around Rome – all bathed in a soft golden light. There I was, me, my pink tutu (I’ve brought a fresh, sparkling pink tutu to keep my Roman adventures magical, don't you worry!), strolling under the Italian sunset! Just me and my camera – well, that, and an enthusiastic Italian fan who I think wanted to know everything about the magic of tutus, and asked me about my dreams! Such a sweetheart – he was absolutely going to go to my next ballet production back in Derbyshire!

I must say, I just love how travelling gets the creative juices flowing. Each city has its own story, and my inspiration grows each time!

Tonight, it's off to try out another Italian favourite - a local trattoria with my lovely, very, very friendly Italian tour guide. We're all off to get pizza and prosecco in Trastevere! He’s actually promising me a full, magical tour of the hidden alleys and secret, stunning architectural secrets of this glorious old city - as long as I bring my dancing shoes. I can’t wait!

So darlings, if you ever find yourself in Rome, you'll want to do these things, don’t miss them:

  • *Don't just see the Colosseum. Really *feel the Colosseum.
  • Seek out the small trattorias.
  • Explore the narrow streets in Trastevere.
  • Dress to the nines, darling! Let Rome’s streets be your stage.

Now, I'm off to dance my way into the night with a glass of prosecco and my very, very stylish tutu!

Stay tuned for more adventures next week, darlings! Don’t forget to visit the Pink Tutu website for more inspiration, ideas, and fun!

Ciao Bella!

P.S. Pink Tutus - Let's make Rome (and the whole world!) a place of dreams, joy, and wonder. And maybe a bit of pink!

I'll see you next week for another round of Pink Tutu adventures!
