Pink Tutu Rome: Wednesday 30th January 2002 - Post 347: A Roman Holiday!
Ciao Bella!
Well, darling readers, I’ve arrived in the Eternal City – Rome, and it’s as fabulous as everyone says! This week, the Pink Tutu is going to take you on a whirlwind tour of ancient history, breathtaking art, delicious food, and, of course, the chicest boutiques and ateliers Rome has to offer. Buckle up, buttercups, it's going to be a real Italian adventure!
Getting to Rome by Train
For my journey from Derbyshire to the capital of Italy, I decided to embrace the magic of the railway. It's something I love to do – travelling by train has such a special charm. The journey was as glamorous as I imagined: I travelled First Class and indulged in a glass of sparkling wine, read a couple of chapters of my new ballet novel, and dreamt up exciting outfits I’d create for the big Roman shopping spree I had planned. You’ll just have to trust me – the most exciting and stylish ensembles are usually created when I’m hurtling through a country on a train. It just feels inspired.
I have to say, Italian railway stations are full of vibrant life, something I truly enjoy. Imagine, ladies, stepping off the train to be greeted with such excitement – you can feel the history in the air, you can practically hear the stories of emperors, popes, and poets echoing from the walls. And let's be honest, I wouldn't want to start my Roman adventure anywhere else than a station dripping in such history!
Checking into My Rome Home
I’m staying in a gorgeous little boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Trastevere, a buzzing neighbourhood overflowing with Roman charm. Imagine winding cobblestone streets, charming restaurants spilling out onto the streets, little boutiques full of handcrafted delights, and locals enjoying gelato under a sky peppered with stars – this is Trastevere, and I’m already falling head over heels!
First Glimpse of Ancient Rome
This morning, my first stop was a landmark everyone has dreamt of seeing – the Colosseum! Even if you're not into ancient history, I tell you, this building is truly breathtaking! I could just picture the gladiatorial fights, the crowds cheering, and the thrill of those magnificent contests. It's quite remarkable, thinking about all the history that transpired in this amphitheater. I actually spent quite some time just gazing up at its majestic façade.
A Lunch Fit for a Ballerina
My darling friends, food in Rome is an adventure in itself! Today, for lunch, I enjoyed an authentic Roman dish at a lovely little cafe near the Pantheon, with a breathtaking view over the city. Think of thin pasta with creamy sauce and mouthwatering flavours – simply divine! You’d have thought I'd been saving room for the delicious, light, and refreshing fruit salad that followed. I really know how to treat myself!
Shopping Spree in the Piazza Navona
After my divine lunch, I headed straight for the bustling Piazza Navona, a treasure trove of everything chic and fabulous! Oh, ladies, I simply had to explore the elegant boutiques that lined this square! Imagine beautifully displayed handbags, shimmering scarves, shoes that could make any ballerina weak at the knees – the Piazza Navona is truly a dream for any fashion-lover like me. My wallet may be crying a little, but my wardrobe is positively swooning! I even discovered a fabulous vintage clothing store that offered the most magnificent selection of beautiful evening dresses – I simply had to try on several of them, it was all too much to resist! The pink-tutu outfit in the photo below, paired with these vintage delights, is making my heart sing, what do you think?
The Trevi Fountain Magic
I know, I know, everyone throws a coin in the Trevi Fountain and wishes to return to Rome – but, darling, I’m planning on returning to this magical city every year, so my coin is already pre-booked! Oh, and my wish, you ask? You see, ladies, the Trevi Fountain truly feels magical. Tossing a coin and feeling the weight of it, while you make a wish in the shadow of the beautiful statues of the Ocean God Neptune…it just feels so wonderfully glamorous. My wish, you may ask? To always have enough pink tutus to fill an entire dance studio!
Dinner on the Roman Rooftop
As the evening arrived, I enjoyed a stunning sunset over the city from the roof of my hotel. What a magical sight it was to watch the last golden rays of the sun kissing the terracotta rooftops! Dinner was nothing less than spectacular, served under the Roman stars – a perfect symphony of flavours with my favorite pasta dishes and the most delicious local wines.
On a Dance With the Stars…Literally!
My dear friends, my first few days in Rome have truly exceeded all my expectations! I’m embracing every moment, and I can't wait for you to hear about the adventures to come. Tonight, I'm attending the Opera di Roma, and trust me, I’ll be sporting the perfect Pink Tutu outfit, and if the opera house allows it, I’m even thinking about a twirl or two under the beautiful chandeliers! Oh, and who knows, I may even dance a little jig outside, surrounded by the most fabulous fountains of Rome!
I hope you’re enjoying my little Roman adventures so far, darlings! Remember, this is just the beginning. Join me again next week for more sartorial inspiration, delicious discoveries, and of course, another fantastic adventure with Pink Tutu in Rome. Until then, remember, a little pink in your life can make every day feel special.
Love and tutus,
Emma
