Pink Tutu Rome: #504 - La Dolce Vita (and the Dolce Dress)

Ciao, darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad ballerina, and I'm back with a new blog post from the magical city of Rome! It's Wednesday, the day we all gather here on www.pink-tutu.com, and it wouldn't be a Wednesday without a fresh update from my adventures in this dazzling city.

This week, we're in the Eternal City, the heart of Roman history, the hub of artistic inspiration, and let's be honest, the city of fabulous fashion! My Italian adventure has been one I'll never forget, filled with charming piazzas, cobblestone streets, and gelato that makes your heart sing. But, before we delve into the Roman delights, let's chat about how I got here.

For you lovely lot who are new to my blog, you might be wondering, how does a pink-tutu-loving ballerina from Derbyshire afford such exciting adventures? Well, it all boils down to my favourite thing: ballet! I earn my travel fund by performing at delightful events โ€“ everything from fundraising galas to local theatre productions. Yes, I wear my pink tutus to work! And that's how I managed to find myself on a gloriously breezy Italian morning, whizzing through the countryside on a high-speed train, feeling as if I'd stepped into a scene straight out of a Federico Fellini film.

Speaking of glamour, let me tell you about my most recent stage triumph. Last Saturday, I took centre stage in a whimsical ballet performance for a charity ball in Buxton. The theme was "Under the Sea," so I twirled in a glistening teal-and-silver tutu, topped with a glittering tiara. And let's not forget the hair โ€“ mermaid braids adorned with sparkling shells. Imagine the sight, darling! My performances might be whimsical, but my travel style is practical yet stylish. A black jumpsuit is always a winner for travelling โ€“ comfortable for the train and smart enough for sightseeing. I throw in a fabulous scarf, and a trusty crossbody bag for my essentials (yes, that includes my signature pink tutu โ€“ one never knows when an impromptu twirl is called for!).

Oh, and letโ€™s not forget the footwear! In Rome, comfort is key. That's why my trusty flatforms, in a bright shade of fuchsia, have been my absolute go-to companions. A touch of pink adds a dash of fun even to the most historical sights.

Now, back to the capital of Italy. My journey began in the morning, just like a ballet class โ€“ a quick breakfast of pastries and coffee, then a dash to the station to hop on the Eurostar. For this leg of my trip, I chose the first-class carriage, a decision I thoroughly enjoyed! Imagine a sleek, modern carriage with plush seats, excellent legroom, and complimentary sparkling water (perfect for my hydration needs, as you all know). I used the time on the train to catch up on my reading. "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" by Tennessee Williams, a wonderfully dramatic novel, was the perfect read for this enchanting city.

Upon arriving at Roma Termini, I checked into my delightful hotel โ€“ a quaint boutique hotel just a stone's throw from the Colosseum. The moment I saw the lush gardens and the charming, floral-patterned lobby, I knew I had found a home away from home.

The hotel staff was simply divine, showering me with warm Italian greetings and helping me find my way around the neighbourhood. In fact, a sweet waiter gave me the most delicious restaurant recommendation: a hidden gem in a quiet corner of the Trastevere district, serving the most mouthwatering homemade pasta with pesto I have ever tasted. Trust me, darling, this place is worth writing home about!

That evening, I decided to embrace the beauty of Rome by strolling through the city centre, with its majestic Trevi Fountain glimmering under the starry night sky.

Rome is a visual feast for the senses. From the magnificent architecture of the Roman Forum to the enchanting baroque artistry of the Vatican, every turn reveals a masterpiece waiting to be explored. And let me tell you, this pink tutu girl is always ready to twirl among the beautiful marble structures!

Now, if you know me well, you know I can't go on a trip without indulging in a spot of retail therapy. And Rome, oh Rome, you truly did not disappoint! The Via Condotti, the chic shopping street in the heart of Rome, is a dream come true for a girl with an eye for style like myself. Designer boutiques like Valentino, Gucci, and Fendi lined the streets, each displaying their latest collections like captivating theatrical productions.

However, while those luxurious boutiques are definitely eye-catching, I had to exercise restraint this time. I made a commitment to my travel budget (it is all about balance, darlings!). Still, I was lucky to find some utterly enchanting items at independent shops โ€“ a gorgeous silk scarf, a delicate hand-painted trinket, and a vintage clutch purse with just a hint of a vintage Roman flair. Letโ€™s just say my suitcase is full of charming treasures from Rome!

The best part about Rome, however, is the vibrant culture that truly breathes through every street. I spent an afternoon taking a traditional Roman cooking class, whipping up some delicious dishes and feeling a deep connection to the passion of Italian food.

This past Sunday, I visited the Vatican, experiencing the sheer beauty and grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica. I felt awestruck by its intricate mosaics, soaring columns, and awe-inspiring paintings, and then took some time to enjoy the serene Vatican gardens, which were just as lovely as I expected, filled with ancient trees, statues, and picturesque fountains.

For me, travel is all about connecting with the people and their stories. And Rome, with its rich history, passionate culture, and friendly locals, offered a myriad of stories to uncover. As I strolled through the ancient Roman ruins, it felt like I was stepping back in time, envisioning the emperors, gladiators, and philosophers who had walked these same paths before me. The streets were full of vibrant street artists, musicians serenading passers-by, and families enjoying picnics in charming piazzas. It was an absolute joy to simply observe and soak in the beauty of it all!

You know I have a secret penchant for the theatrical and for exploring off the beaten path. So naturally, I found my way to the Teatro Argentina, one of Rome's oldest theatres. Seeing this stunning space where a play from Shakespeare had been performed decades ago filled me with wonder and inspired me to take my dance and performance to another level. It's like, even the cobblestone streets here exude drama. I couldn't resist sneaking into one of the rehearsals, I had to experience the magic that happens when a play is brought to life in such a historically significant space!

Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without savouring the authentic flavors of Italian cuisine. I had to treat myself to a few of Rome's iconic dishes โ€“ freshly made pasta carbonara, creamy ricotta-stuffed ravioli, and heavenly gelato (always with a scoop of strawberry, naturally!).

To wrap up this post, darlings, I just have to say that Rome has truly stolen a piece of my heart. I left the city feeling utterly enchanted, a little bit more inspired, and fully embracing the โ€œdolce vita" โ€“ the sweet life โ€“ in my pink tutu.

Stay tuned for more pink-tutu-tastic adventures, dear friends. Next week, Iโ€™ll be taking on the vibrant city of Florence โ€“ the capital of Tuscany! Iโ€™ll be sharing all about its art, history, and, of course, its delectable culinary delights. Until next Wednesday, may your life be full of graceful movements, beautiful adventures, and just a touch of pink.

And remember, every day is an opportunity to twirl! Ciao for now, Emma xx
