Pink Tutu Rome: Wednesday 5th July 2006 – Post #578

Buongiorno from sunny Rome, darlings! This week, your favourite pink tutu-clad adventurer has been twirling around the Eternal City, and oh, it’s been simply divine! I landed on Monday morning, my suitcase overflowing with tulle, and since then, I've been taking in everything Rome has to offer, from ancient ruins to fashion-forward boutiques – all whilst, of course, wearing my signature pink tutu.

For those of you who haven't tuned in yet, welcome to Pink Tutu Rome! My name is Emma, and I’m a ballerina with a serious penchant for pink, travelling the world to spread the message of twirling joy! (And let’s be honest, encourage everyone to embrace their inner tutu-wearing queen!). This is the weekly post, documenting my Roman escapades – because who doesn’t love a little Italian adventure?

Getting here was a dream – the train journey was as stylish as can be, and with my trusty tutu folded neatly beside me, I even caught a few envious stares (my favourite!). It's something I've found to be common with train travel. When you’re sat in a first-class carriage in your pink tutu, with a good book, it's as good as sitting front row at a performance, just without the stress of needing a good pair of ballet shoes.

And the fashion! Honestly, darling, Romans know their style. I saw so many outfits that would make any fashionista swoon. I spotted a darling leather jacket with sequins paired with a fluffy pink dress and gladiator sandals that were simply divine. But let's not forget, the stars of this week's fashion show are Rome’s amazing buildings - what a dramatic backdrop for a little twirling and a photo-shoot!

Now, for the things I’ve been loving:

  1. The Colosseum: My first stop was a little pilgrimage to the Colosseum. It was enormous! And incredibly humbling. Just the sheer scale of it filled me with awe. Can you imagine what the gladiators must have felt, looking up at the throngs of excited people, or maybe fearing the crowd’s roar. The energy was something truly special – I could almost see the battles, hear the music, smell the popcorn – or was that just me?

  2. Trevi Fountain: Then it was onto the beautiful Trevi Fountain. Let me tell you, you’ve all got to toss a coin into the Trevi fountain, darling – especially in a tutu – if not just to get the best photo opportunity! Apparently, if you toss a coin over your left shoulder, it guarantees you'll return to Rome. So of course I tossed two – a silver coin over my left, a gold one over my right – just to be sure, darling! After all, what’s life without a little Italian charm?

  3. A little street theatre: On the Tuesday evening, I found myself right in the heart of the action. My wanderings took me through one of Rome's piazzas and suddenly there was this fantastic mime performance! I nearly shrieked. Not in that I didn't want to be there (I would never want to miss out on an opportunity to watch some great street theatre), but because the artist had just pulled off a series of utterly fantastic feats, making him literally fly through the air – like a bird! Then he stood still, with that "It's all over now, folks" mime look, before making his way to his hat where the audience had started to deposit coins and tips. Now there’s street theatre that will certainly make you look twice, and possibly, stop a pedestrian for a second! Oh, and did I mention he had on a pink tutu? Maybe he took some inspiration from me... or, possibly it's just a sign that Rome is ripe for the tutu takeover.

Dinner, dancing and a little fashion show

It's no secret, darlings, that I'm a big foodie. So naturally, my Italian odyssey wouldn’t be complete without some serious Italian cuisine. Pasta, pizza, and gelato - I indulged in it all. Oh, the heavenly scent of herbs and spices – just delicious! And it was at that moment I found myself amidst a fashion show, where I was greeted by my dinner at one of Rome’s more stylish restaurants, La Pergola – one of Italy’s best and highest ranking. Now, I don't usually talk about fashion in a restaurant but what a way to be shown to your seat, in a luxurious restaurant - with staff impeccably dressed wearing little, sparkly, and dare I say - stylish tutus.

Now, a night wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of a twirl – even if it was just in a café. So, this evening, as the stars twinkled above, I let loose on the terrace. My trusty pink tutu flowing with every graceful spin. I'm quite sure the other diners looked at me with a combination of amusement and admiration, which really made my evening – the perfect end to a day of exploration. This beautiful city certainly has an allure that pulls you in. And I haven't even seen the Borghese Gallery, the Vatican City, the Pantheon or all of the countless piazzas and cosy cafes that await. I think Rome's just a little bit smitten with my tutu. Or am I smitten with Rome, in a tutu? Who can say?!

Oh, I do love my tutus - and my travels!

This is my mission, darlings - to inspire the world to embrace the tutu, to add a little whimsy to their lives. From the heart of Derbyshire, to the beautiful streets of Rome, I will bring my passion, grace and my pink tutu, all across the world! I hope you'll all be with me on this amazing journey – subscribe to my blog to get the updates on what new and exciting adventures this pink tutu will bring. Until next week – Stay fabulous!
