Pink Tutu Rome: #636 – Ciao Bella, Rome!

Wednesday, 15th August 2007

Buongiorno, darlings! Emma here, your Pink Tutu Princess, and guess where I am? Rome, Italy! The eternal city, the city of love, the city of gelato – it's just so incredibly dreamy! It feels like I've stepped right into a film, a classic romance with cobbled streets, ancient ruins, and sun-drenched piazzas. And me? Well, I'm looking the part too! My favourite pink tutu is getting a serious work out as I sashay through the streets. You simply can't be too much of a girly girl in Rome, darlings!

I arrived in Rome on the Orient Express, yes, you heard that right, the Orient Express! It's just the most glamorous way to travel and feels incredibly luxurious, right up my alley. Plus, with all the beautiful landscapes flying past the window, I had plenty of time to brainstorm outfit ideas for all my adventures.

My little trip to Rome has been a long time coming, ever since I first saw "Roman Holiday" at the cinema back in Derbyshire. Audrey Hepburn – my idol! – gliding around in that stylish little black dress and effortlessly stealing a scooter. Now, that's my kind of heroine.

So, what has this fashionista-turned-explorer been up to since arriving in this beautiful city?

Day 1: Pantheon and shopping

First things first, after a quick nap to recover from my train journey, I had to see the Pantheon. You just can't come to Rome without a little pilgrimage to this magnificent temple-turned-church. It's absolutely enormous and breathtaking, with the light pouring through that giant dome!

From the Pantheon, I took a wander through the narrow, cobbled streets – perfect for showing off my new pair of cherry-red sandals – to the Trevi Fountain. I absolutely adore this fountain and tossed a coin in for good luck, naturally. My fingers are crossed for another fabulous ballet performance.

Speaking of which, who knew they had such amazing ballet studios in Rome?! I dropped by this sweet little studio near the Pantheon and did some of my stretches. The teacher was wonderful, very welcoming and helpful even though my Italian is a bit rusty, even though she gave me a lovely compliment and I am pretty sure she said "bellissima". What could possibly go wrong in a ballet studio with pink walls? Not a single thing! It feels good to get back in the dance shoes – who knows, I might even have some fun and learn a new move.

The shops in Rome are divine. Seriously divine! This city has some fantastic boutiques that make you feel like a film star. I bought this gorgeous silk scarf with a lovely floral design – perfect for accessorizing with a tutu! I couldn’t help myself, and picked up a gorgeous silver necklace for a special evening, because well... you just never know! Plus, I found the cutest pink ballet shoes I've ever seen – I’m pretty sure they are a must-have for a true Pink Tutu Princess.

Day 2: A Taste of Italy, Gladiator Style

A morning stroll around the Colosseum. How incredible is this place? So much history. I have to admit I had a bit of a Princess Bride moment imagining Inigo Montoya going head-to-head with a rogue Six Fingered Man in the gladiatorial arena. But, alas, the gladiators are no more, replaced by a legion of eager tourists like me. And my tutu, of course!

Lunch in a small trattoria - the Colosseum’s shadow. It’s a real gem! They had the most delicious pasta carbonara, I don't know if it was the flavours, the fresh ingredients or simply being in such a magnificent location, but it was truly divine! It’s an experience that just feels like the ultimate “Italian” thing to do!

Day 3: Fashionable Fun, Dolce and Gabbana Style

You cannot go to Rome without a spot of Dolce & Gabbana! The iconic Italian fashion house was an absolute must-visit. I mean, you just can't walk by without feeling compelled to slip on some of those stunning, glamorous dresses. I didn't get anything this time – well, just one teeny tiny piece! Because let’s face it, there’s no point buying something just to hide away in a drawer. It was an extremely cute, teeny pink beaded handbag that I am thinking of wearing for a special evening - with, of course, a fabulous, bright pink tulle outfit to make it even more fabulous!

For the evening, it was time to go see a show at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. This stunning theatre, one of the most magnificent I have ever seen, held the stage for one of my favourite ballets – "Giselle". This classic romantic ballet was so moving, the dancers were superb, and the entire experience felt magical.

The Verdict

Rome has definitely stolen my heart! It’s so enchanting, full of history and culture and all so amazingly beautiful! You’ll never tire of those stunning squares, beautiful buildings, incredible architecture and, not to mention, amazing food and incredible shops! It really is a magical city and a fabulous destination for a Pink Tutu Princess, with gorgeous cafes, incredible food and the perfect setting for making those Insta-worthy moments, just for you and, of course, to help make your next trip that much more magical. I can't wait to visit again – and bring a whole troop of tutu-clad princesses with me next time. Ciao bella, Rome! Until next week…
