Pink Tutu Rome: Post #656 – The Eternal City's Eternal Charm (and a Pink Tutu for the Colosseum!)

Ciao bellas! Emma here, your trusty pink-tutu-wearing travel buddy, and this week I'm bringing you straight from the heart of the Eternal City – Rome! Yes, that's right, your favourite tutu-clad wanderer has traded Derbyshire hills for Roman ruins, and it's every bit as magical as you can imagine.

I love train journeys, especially long ones where I can really settle in and let my imagination wander. This time, it was filled with visions of ancient gladiators, emperors strutting in their togas, and of course, my perfect pink tutu twirling among the Roman columns. (Who knows, maybe I'll get to perform at the Colosseum one day... wouldn't that be something?)

The journey

Getting here was a breeze – a smooth, comfortable train ride through the Italian countryside. It was like stepping into a living, breathing landscape painting. Sun-drenched vineyards, charming villages with terracotta rooftops, and the scent of olive groves... ah, bellissimo! And you wouldn’t believe how many times I got complimented on my bright pink tutu. It’s a real conversation starter!

The city's heartbeat

Rome is everything I expected and so much more! The energy here is infectious. People are passionate about their city, their food, their lives, and that makes the atmosphere so lively. And the city itself is like a museum under the open sky – majestic fountains, ancient temples, hidden piazzas, cobblestone streets... the architecture is mind-blowing. And the food, oh the food! Delicious, authentic pasta, fragrant pizzas, and the richest, creamiest gelato… it’s truly a gastronomic adventure.

My Roman adventures so far

I've already been exploring for a couple of days, and I'm still giddy with excitement! This Wednesday, I walked through the majestic Forum and imagined all the bustling activity of emperors and senators centuries ago. It’s truly humbling to stand amongst such history. Then, I found a tucked away spot in a beautiful piazza, surrounded by a captivating performance by a street ballet group. It felt so magical, just like a scene from a fairytale, especially when I got the chance to twirl a few times with them!

This morning, I spent hours exploring the Vatican. The sheer size and scale of St. Peter’s Basilica are incredible, and I got goosebumps as I gazed at Michelangelo’s Pieta. You just have to experience it to truly comprehend its beauty.

I couldn’t leave Rome without experiencing the grandeur of the Colosseum. This awe-inspiring amphitheater, a monument to ancient Rome's power, truly made me feel tiny in comparison! It’s hard not to be captivated by the whispers of history echoing from those stone walls. You can almost imagine the roar of the crowd as gladiators fought for glory! I'm not sure I’d make a very good gladiator though - perhaps I'll perform a graceful ballet routine in front of the Colosseum for everyone to enjoy instead.

A sprinkle of pink in the eternal city

My trip so far has been a feast for the senses. From the tantalizing aroma of fresh bread wafting from bakeries to the melodious Italian chatter filling the air, from the intricate artistry of Baroque churches to the playful, vibrant energy of street performers, every moment has been an enchanting experience.

And, of course, I've made sure to incorporate my own brand of pink tutu magic wherever I go. I’ve already spotted a couple of locals who looked curious about my outfit. Hopefully, I’m sparking some new tutu love here in Rome! Who knows, maybe one day we’ll have a whole flash mob of tutus twirling around the Trevi Fountain. That’d be something truly extraordinary!

A sneak peek into the future

I'm already planning my next Roman adventures! This Friday, I’m venturing into Trastevere, one of the most charming neighbourhoods in the city, and I've heard there’s a ballet school with a stunning studio overlooking the River Tiber – can’t wait to see if it lives up to the hype! Then, on Saturday, I’ll be heading to a theatre to catch a classic Italian opera – how fabulous! And I can’t forget a delightful stroll through the Borghese Gallery – their Renaissance art is just magnificent. You can be sure I’ll keep you all posted on my experiences.

My fashion finds

As a self-proclaimed fashionista, I can’t leave Rome without exploring its vibrant fashion scene! The boutiques here are just breathtaking, brimming with Italian flair and elegance. I’m absolutely in love with the vintage shops and artisan boutiques in Trastevere, and I already have my eye on some gorgeous silk scarves and a beautiful embroidered tunic to bring back home. Stay tuned for more of my fashion finds!

Until next Wednesday, keep twirling, bella!

Ciao!

Emma
