Pink Tutu Rome: Post 854 – Ciao Bella! A Ballerina's Journey Through the Eternal City
Wednesday 19th October, 2011
Ciao bella! The train journey from Derbyshire to Rome was utterly magical. I absolutely adore train journeys, especially those that wind through picturesque countryside, and then emerge into bustling city life. There's just something about the rhythm of the tracks, the changing scenery, and the anticipation that gets my heart soaring. And today was extra special, because this is where my pink tutu adventures lead me – the incredible, awe-inspiring city of Rome!
As I stepped out of the station, I was immediately captivated. It felt like I'd been whisked away to a fairytale. Sun-drenched buildings adorned with crumbling facades, vibrant flower markets bursting with color, cobblestone streets humming with life – it was like walking through an ancient storybook.
Naturally, I'd come prepared. My trusty pink tutu bag was bursting with fabulous finds – a feather boa, my trusty tiara, a bejewelled hair clip, a pair of pink lace gloves and a bright pink scarf for layering up in the evening, which, as we all know, are crucial for any Roman ballerina on the go. And of course, I was sporting my favourite tulle masterpiece – a bubblegum pink tutu that would put the spotlight on this delightful little dancer even in the bustling Roman piazzas.
This week's blog post, darlings, is dedicated to one thing – falling head over heels in love with Rome!
Morning Ritual: An Espresso with a View
The morning ritual began with an espresso at a tiny, cobbled café tucked away on a street adorned with orange trees. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans filled the air, and the creamy cappuccino, served in a dainty cup, was absolutely divine. A delicious Italian treat was served on the side, a beautifully formed, light and airy brioche that was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. It felt like the most magical breakfast setting in the world!
I savoured my breakfast while enjoying the captivating backdrop – a crumbling Roman ruin with ancient stone arches that were draped in vibrant ivy. It was a beautiful contrast, and it gave me a sense of the city's enduring beauty. And of course, a bit of pink made an appearance in my cappuccino. A sprinkling of pink sugar added a touch of whimsy and joy to this beautiful, bustling, Roman scene.
Shopping Spree: An Ode to Roman Fashion
From the espresso cafe, I wandered towards the shopping haven of Via Condotti. This street is practically a ballet in itself, with every window display a masterpiece. This was my kind of place - elegance, history, and beautiful things - a ballet girl's dream! I spent hours meandering, gazing at luxurious shoes and exquisite designer handbags. But I was most mesmerised by the craftsmanship of the clothing shops – delicate silks, shimmering lace, and exquisitely tailored jackets that practically sang with sophistication.
I snagged a beautiful scarlet scarf with intricate embroidery. It perfectly complimented my pink tutu, and, frankly, who can resist a scarf that shouts, 'Ciao Bella, Rome'! I’ve added this to my ballerina costume collection.
Evening Delight: Opera at the Teatro dell’Opera
No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Teatro dell’Opera, a breathtaking building that has played host to countless operatic and ballet legends. The air crackled with anticipation, and the magnificent décor transported me back in time to a bygone era of elegance and extravagance. The opera “La Traviata” was spectacular. I felt transported into a different world by the haunting melody, dramatic performances, and captivating costumes. The story about a tragic, but beautiful love was very emotional, and there were many teary eyes in the audience. It felt like an experience that would stay with me forever. I am even inspired to put together a tutu performance of 'La Traviata' for my blog followers – I know you are all looking forward to that.
The opera concluded with thunderous applause from the audience and a magical moment as a flurry of confetti rained down on the stage – pure ballet bliss.
Dinner with a View: Rooftop Romance
A perfect ending to a beautiful day in Rome was an intimate rooftop dinner at a small, cosy trattoria in Trastevere. As the sky turned into a beautiful palette of hues, the city below sparkled with a magical, twinkling light. We shared stories, sipped fine Italian wine, and savoured the fresh flavours of Italian cuisine. We were seated outside, at a beautiful pink-painted table, with lanterns twinkling and a backdrop of the roman rooftops, I couldn't have asked for a more magical setting.
As I sit here, writing in my little pink tutu-shaped notebook, I can't help but feel a sense of pure joy. Rome has stolen a piece of my heart. And for every Roman princess, there's a pink tutu. This city is a story waiting to be written, a love story to be experienced, and a ballet waiting to be danced. Until next Wednesday, my lovely dancers!
Stay fabulous, always wear a pink tutu!
