Pink Tutu Rome: #1298 - Ciao Bella, Rome!

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another Pink Tutu Rome blog post! I’m back, back in the beautiful city of Rome, for a whole week of balletic bliss, sightseeing, and of course, shopping. It’s the perfect mix of culture, history, and fashion – and that's my idea of a perfect trip, no matter how many times I come back. This week I’ll be delving into Rome's secrets – where to find the best gelato, the best places to get a glimpse of Roman history, and how to have a perfectly Pink Tutu time in the Eternal City!

Remember that glorious day in December, back when snow fell on the rooftops of Derbyshire and Christmas cheer was in the air? Well, that’s the day I booked my ticket for Rome! I had to be here this week because of something truly special: The opening night of the Opera di Roma’s production of "La Traviata." You know me, I love a good opera, but I couldn't wait to see it in this magnificent setting!

After weeks of practicing in my studio in Derbyshire (it’s good to be in routine!), I decided it was time to head off on a trip. That journey across Europe by train is always such an adventure - especially when you're in a pink tutu, it certainly makes the experience memorable, I tell you. Everyone wants to stop and chat. Who doesn't love a bit of pink in their life?

So, here I am in Rome! It's still sunny and warm, the streets are buzzing, the smell of fresh espresso and pastries fills the air, and I'm surrounded by beautiful, historic buildings. It's no surprise this city holds my heart captive! It’s all the romance you can ask for, all the vibrant colour, and just enough history to leave me buzzing for weeks.

Rome for the Pink Tutu Ballerina:

There’s no doubt that Rome’s just bursting with beauty, history, and inspiration, and of course, the food – oh, the food! However, as a ballet fanatic, Rome offers me much more than just pasta and pretty piazzas! Let me break down my perfect Pink Tutu weekend here:

  • Ballet performances: It was La Traviata at the Opera di Roma for me this time, but you’ll find ballet galore here, just around the corner, with plenty of stunning performances happening throughout the year, right in the city. It’s worth checking online or at your hotel for a list of local performances that coincide with your trip – it could be just the magical touch you’re looking for!

  • Ballet Classes: Don't be put off by the fact that I’m here on a 'holiday'. You know I can’t resist! Finding a beautiful studio tucked away in a historic side street was easy as pie, and getting my pointe shoes warmed up again is what keeps me going. There’s just something magical about stepping into the studio in a new place, surrounded by different energy, and different ballerinas. That energy – the sheer joy of being part of something larger than myself – just makes me want to do my best! I even picked up a gorgeous, fluffy, pale pink leotard and matching skirt from a local shop! Can't help but keep those pink dreams going, even on my trips away!

  • A walk in the park: A bit different from what you’re thinking, isn't it? A walk in the park, with a ballerina? Yes! It's in the Villa Borghese – a stunning green space where locals come to picnic, families play, and couples enjoy the gentle Roman sunshine. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic lunch on my little fold-out stool (and who knew they have a little lake!), so naturally, I had to take my ballet shoes out for a stroll and a pirouette! My tip? Find your very own corner of the park – away from the main path - and just savour the serenity of the place. You’ll be surprised how much inspiration you get when you’re amongst nature.

Shopping: Oh, it was a hard choice, but this week, the prize goes to Via Condotti. My absolute favourite. I’ve made a day of it, walking this luxurious street from one end to the other. The fashion – oh, the fashion! Every window display, each shopfront is bursting with incredible elegance. It’s like stepping into a fairytale, but instead of magic, there’s Gucci and Prada! However, a bit more for the real world…

  • An Afternoon at the Teatro Argentina: Now this is a secret gem of Rome, nestled away from the tourists in a charming little courtyard. It’s truly beautiful – this ancient theatre, the second oldest in the city, a real time capsule! While you can enjoy the shows, for me, the best bit is the afternoon tour. Take my advice – try and squeeze this into your trip if you can, it really takes you back to ancient times.

Eating & Indulging: Now, who's for gelato?

As an advocate of all things delicious, and a complete and utter fan of Italy's gelato scene, you know I’ve had my fill! From the smallest local shops to the more decadent gelaterias, the taste is incredible and there's enough variety to satisfy the fussiest of palates! My advice? If you like your flavours with a twist – go with pistachio or ricotta. The real treats, though? Well, they’re those beautiful little pastel shops you’ll see throughout Rome – you’ll be hooked after a single macaron or a few little cake bites!

For you:

I know there’s so much to see here in Rome, that it can be hard to take in everything in one visit! What have I been missing? Where’s the secret gem that I haven’t discovered yet?
